Persuasive Essay: The Battle Over Homework
The Battle Over Homework

Why do homework for 3 hours when you have been at school doing work for 7 hours? Having all of this homework puts great stress and is the primary source of stress of kids. Kids should not have to do homework at home when we go to school for 6-7 hours a day and do work all day. When kids go home they should be able to enjoy their free time and not have to worry about homework 24/7.

At school kids do work all day, so why should they need more at home? It is proven, homework causes greater stress and makes kids worry more. 56% of students considered homework a primary source of stress according to a survey by Stanford (Parker). So with all of that stress of homework and schoolwork, it makes it a lot harder for kids to enjoy their free time. In schools all around the U.S. kids are starting to get homework at a very young age. A 2007 Metlife study found that 45% of students in grades 3-12 spend more than an hour doing homework (Ryan). A survey from Stanford and student responses indicate that too much time on homework meant that students were not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills. Kids that are getting a lot of homework do not have the time or rest they need to meet their developmental needs. Studies have found that schools tend to roughly follow these guidelines: The University of Michigan found that students ages six to eight spend 29 minutes doing homework per night while 15-to-17-year-old students spend 50 minutes doing homework (Ryan). If students are spending 30 minutes to an hour of homework even at a very young age then that is too much of a push for homework. Most kids try hard at school all day, if they are doing their best work and spending their time wisely they need to have the free time that they

Homework doesn't take all day; realistically you will have time for other things. Homework allows practice for future endeavors, and teaches responsibility and organization skills. Homework allows children to work at their own pace, without peer pressure and afraid of falling behind during class. Homework allows time to study for tests, and go over work that you did in class. Reason being yes I understand that different classes have different papers and some have more worksheets than others but…

On the other hand, homework takes away from social time. Instead of visiting with your family or going out with friends, you stay home and do homework. Homework takes away from everything else you should balance in your life. It’s hard to fit homework into the day if you have a job, play sports, work, go to the gym, and hang out with friends. Susan Schwartz says homework can decrease a child’s interest in learning and having parents intervene can lead to conflict.(9)…

These three examples are reasons why students should have a shorter school day. Almost every student has homework every night. Homework can last up to one to three hours a day and it can make a student slack off. Brains work 6 hours a day with classwork, tests, etc. Brains need a break before they have to their homework. Homework is just another thing to think about when the bell rings to go home. It is definitely what no one wants to do right when they…

Homework Should be Reduced Homework has been around for as long as there have been tax paying schools. The first person to create homework was Robert Nevilis from Italy in 1905 (Roberto). Over the years that homework has been around, people have gotten different impressions and opinions on the topic. Most students believe it is way too much and unnecessary. Teachers believe that homework is very useful and beneficial for the students. While other faculty members believe it is a waste of time. Teachers and students are not the only ones with mixed emotions on this topic (NEA). Parents can also relate. Homework should be reduced because it can interfere with family time and cause tension, it can cause health problems and…

Homework: Foundation to Success or Foundation to Distress? Imagine a world where students come home from school and take the time to unwind and relax. It has been proven that almost three quarters of Canadian parents think that homework is a household stress. So why is homework still being assigned at schools, especially for younger grades? In recent years, the question of whether or not homework should be banned from elementary schools and limited to one hour per weekday in high school has been widely discussed. According to a Stanford Researcher, too much homework can negatively children. It takes their lives away from school, where family, friends, and social activities matter (Parker). The clock hits 7:30 and I just get home and haven’t been home all day. Then I realize that I have to do English homework, social studies, science and math. This has happened to me many times. The second reason we shouldn’t have homework is it is a major health issue for most kids. First off, you get less sleep because some teens have to stay up all night because they get home late and still have to do a lot of homework. Students in middle school need a lot of sleep because they have to wake up at 6:00. People say that kids from ages 10-18 need at least 8-9 hours of sleep and some teens only get 6-7 because there up so late doing homework. The second reason homework is a health issue is it gives kids a lot of stress because they have to do homework and don’t want to forget anything. This gives students more stress because they already have stress from tests, lessons and exams. The last reason why homework is a health issue is kids…

“More parents are fighting back against the homework status quo in an attempt to reclaim family time” (Kalish). With the excessive amount of homework given throughout all high school grades, (9-12) most students aged from 13-18 would agree that homework has increased more than the average they have ever had their past years. Even I would agree so. “Too much homework is actually sapping our children's strength, natural curiosity, and love of learning” (Kalish). The longer the hours are spent on homework, the less time children’s and teens get to spend with their parents and the rest of their families. The less time spent with families means that bonds begin to fall apart. “Practicing dozens of homework problems incorrectly cements the wrong method into his brain” (Kalish). Teachers give out so many lessons in class; sometimes students can’t process all the information at once. If teachers slowed down the pace of their lessons, explained in depth…

Just The Right Amount Of Homework Did you ever think that the pressure from too much homework can cause health problems such as anxiety, and uneasy sleeping? Or that homework fuels the cheating epidemic? Well it does. Homework was originally meant to be a review of what was learned earlier that day in class. But, now at days students are coming home with more and more unnecessary busy work. Some of the down sides of too much homework is that it destroys family life and social structure, because it keeps the child in their room for hours working. Also, the stress of too much after school work can really take a toll on student’s mental health. Nevertheless, homework can be useful. It teaches necessary life lessons such as responsibility and time management. For these reasons, I strongly believe that if students are given an appropriate amount of useful work to take home, homework can be very beneficial.…

I am not against homework in any way whatsoever, I know that homework has helped me in the past and will continue to help me for the rest of my education, the thing that I am against though, is the amount of homework that we are given. I believe that homework can be just as helpful as it is “harmful” if not more. I agree that homework can decrease family time or amount of sleep, which should in some way, I believe, come to a stop considering that it is unhealthy for a growing child, but with the right quality of homework, it can be better for all of those who want to succeed and grow intellectually in…

Students are spending double and sometimes triple the amount of time on homework than needed, as stated in an article I read, and this is affecting their lives whether you know this or not. As stated in an article, “Kids today are being overwhelmed,” and I can relate to this. “According to guidelines endorsed by the National Education Association (NEA), a student should be assigned no more than 10 minutes per grade level per night.”, as stated in an article. This means that a 9th grader would spend at least 90 minutes per night on homework, but that isn’t the case here is it. In fact, if you multiply 90 minutes by 3 you get 270 minutes which is 4 hours and 30 minutes, that’s how much time it takes me to do my homework when I actually do it. This is what I have to deal with…

Doing two to three hours of homework a night, after sitting for about five of the six and a half hours of school, creates unneeded stress and anxiety for most students--especially young and growing students with lots of energy. Some children do bad things to themselves because they are stressed in life with too much work. The Chicago Tribune says that kids work all day at school. After they go to school they get assigned homework to do after as even more work. Kids should not have to do more work after a long day of school.…
