Introduction
Are you aware that marijuana has been proven to help people with the pain of chronic illnesses, with less side effects then legal prescription drugs? Yet most states still have not legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes. Many people are arrested in the United States for possession or smoking marijuana, yet on a regular basis, we have to let more severe hardened criminals out of jail because of overcrowding. Talk show host Montel Williams is a known advocate for Medicinal Marijuana, Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999. Williams rallied in Washington D.C. in May of 2005 for the use of Medical Marijuana, Williams states, “legal drugs do not help with the pain, I’m hurting right now. I’m hurting why? Because I knew I had to come to Washington D.C., and I cant’ carry anything because I know I’d get busted.” Though Williams and Many others rallied in Washington D.C. the bipartisan group of lawmakers still decided that the decision on legalizing marijuana will be left up to each state, this means that patients that are in need of medical marijuana are stuck staying in one of the 13 states that currently allows marijuana for medicinal purposes, or these patients are subject to prosecution. Many people believe that Marijuana causes brain damage, this myth comes from the study done in the late 1970s on four monkey’s; however two studies done in 1977 on humans failed to show any sign of brain damage. Some people believe that Marijuana damages the reproductive system, this claim came from Dr. Gabriel Nahas, whom did his study based on tissue cells in Petri dishes and researchers who injected animals with lethal amounts of cannabinoids, the Petri dish experiment has since been rejected, the research done on animals failed to report that after 30 days the animals returned back to normal, to date there has been no successful study on humans to show any adverse reproductive affects on the reproductive system of those smoking Marijuana. People believe, Marijuana is more dangerous than smoking tobacco; however smoking Marijuana is much safer then smoking tobacco. Marijuana contains the same carcinogens as tobacco; however, a tobacco smoker smokes much more tobacco then a Marijuana smoker. Tobacco has a 90% addiction rate, while Marijuana is less addictive then caffeine.
