Persuasive Essay On Homework
I, Allison Winder, declare that the quantity of homework given to high school students is needlessly excessive. My voice is well suited in delivering this problem since taking both regular and AP classes indicate my experience in diverse kinds of classes and I persevere in each of them to achieve my 4.0 GPA. And in the eyes of an oldest child looking after siblings, I want what’s best for them and never want this agony that is inflicted upon me to be placed upon them. I recently took a poll and asked people how many hours they spent on their homework a night on average and received the average that’s just under three hours of homework a night. This indicates that at least nine to nine and a half hours a day are being spent on school related work. This is absolutely ridiculous and …show more content…
It is depriving us of the interactions so essential to us as humans and, especially as teenagers, in such a critical and difficult time of our lives creating an emotional rift between them and others as they are pressured to focus on mundane work and therefore cut themselves off from the world surrounding them. This emotional distance is detrimental to the emotional health of the teenage population and is a cause of depression. Why is this treatment condoned then? I repeat, why is this treatment condoned? The sad thing is, this leads me to my last point, this homework is often a waste of our time and is often busy work. And if not, the work done in class is busy work and the homework could have easily been done in class. Time is not being used wisely or efficiently by teachers so that students are getting the most they can out of school so that they can have less work at home. And I’m not just saying this because it’s easier but also allows us to realize our problem areas of the work we are learning and get immediate help rather than being in a loss at

According to Webster’s Dictionary, homework is work or study done in preparation for a certain event or situation (2016). Parents and students throughout the years continuously complain about homework, arguing that it puts too much stress on students and not enough time to participate in extracurricular activities. Homework has been debated since the beginning of the 19th century (Shahzada 4). By the 1930s, educators were stating that homework was terrible and had no beneficial effect (Shahzada 4). When Sputnik was launched by the USSR, students needed to focus more on education which brought homework back to fame (Shahzada 5). Homework must stay in schools because it is preparation for improving test scores, establishes time management skills, and teaches responsibility.…

Moreover, homework isn't only wasting the student's time but the teachers time as well. By marking and grading homework, teachers are wasting their time. So teachers, please don't blame us the we wasted your time. Some people assume that homework is useful for teachers to watch student's progress but I firmly believe that homework is sent home to test the parents, not the children. I think that teachers can watch the student's progress in school better because teachers don't know that at home who did the homework, the parent, the student or the internet (Google)??????? People also think that homework helps parents to understand that the school holds high goals for students. But, I consider that school work is harder than homework and that means that parents can understand that the school holds higher goals than they think. Furthermore, homework becomes terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you are doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work that you can’t even do. I really, strongly believe that more kids would stay in school and have a better learning experience if they did not have the stress of homework.…

According to Jonathan Rauch in his essay “Now for tonight's assignment”, the problem with the American educational system is that student aren’t assigned enough homework. The amount of homework a student gets dictates how well they will do in school especially for older kids, therefore, more homework equals better grades but the opposite is true for younger students. Rauch says American students don't spent an adequate amount of time on homework He states “In 1999 according to the national assessment of educational progress two thirds of seventeen- year- olds did less than a hour of homework on a typical night”…

Homework Should be Reduced Homework has been around for as long as there have been tax paying schools. The first person to create homework was Robert Nevilis from Italy in 1905 (Roberto). Over the years that homework has been around, people have gotten different impressions and opinions on the topic. Most students believe it is way too much and unnecessary. Teachers believe that homework is very useful and beneficial for the students. While other faculty members believe it is a waste of time. Teachers and students are not the only ones with mixed emotions on this topic (NEA). Parents can also relate. Homework should be reduced because it can interfere with family time and cause tension, it can cause health problems and…

What is homework? It is an eater of souls, it feeds on the misery of innocent, helpless human beings. It basks on the hatred of its enemies. Blood, sweat and tears are shed. It shows no mercy. It shows no love. It will not ease until the entire student’s body has been destroyed, crushed and incinerated. This is homework. It harvests your time blatantly, making your life a huge fraction shorter, scaring your memories, which you will never forget.…

“More parents are fighting back against the homework status quo in an attempt to reclaim family time” (Kalish). With the excessive amount of homework given throughout all high school grades, (9-12) most students aged from 13-18 would agree that homework has increased more than the average they have ever had their past years. Even I would agree so. “Too much homework is actually sapping our children's strength, natural curiosity, and love of learning” (Kalish). The longer the hours are spent on homework, the less time children’s and teens get to spend with their parents and the rest of their families. The less time spent with families means that bonds begin to fall apart. “Practicing dozens of homework problems incorrectly cements the wrong method into his brain” (Kalish). Teachers give out so many lessons in class; sometimes students can’t process all the information at once. If teachers slowed down the pace of their lessons, explained in depth…

Now at days, students are given an unbounded supply of after school work.. Alice, a sixteen year old student from Washington D.C. says that she often has about 4 hours of homework each night(Jesella). Added to the approximately 7 hours of school, she spends 12 hours a day working. In comparison, the average adult works approximately 8 hours a day. How are we students supposed to enjoy our youth if we spend more time working than our parents? Also, agonizing amounts of homework can take a gigantic toll on a student’s health. The weight of a high schooler's bookbag can fuel their back pains for years. Furthermore, the mental stress can leave a student sleepless and grouchy. (No wonder why most of us teenagers are so cranky most of the time!) The stress of homework can even be the reason of why students start cheating. According to a 2005 study of 1800 students conducted by Donald McCabe of Rutgers University, more than 60 percent of students admitted to have committed some sort of plagiarism(McAdams). The mental stress caused by an overly unnecessary amount of…

Landon Biggs English 1050-020 Jan Gane 14 October 2013 The Great Homework Debate Over the last several years, many educators have had strong opinionated discussions about whether or not homework for school-aged children is beneficial to their learning and achievement. Many have researched the topic through various surveys and have reported their findings. Some researchers believe homework helps students grow academically to achieve higher test scores and better grades. An article written by the NC Board of Education supports how homework does help students out. While Alfie Kohn disagrees by saying that homework takes away valuable time that could be used for their hobbies and time that they could spend with their family. Robert Marzano and Debra Pickering, agree with both the NC Board of Education and Kohn by stating that most homework assignments are based on the amount of work students produce and…
