Studying Abroad

Studying abroad has many benefits and can open many doors and possibilities for those who take advantage of the opportunity. I want to have the chance as a college student to study abroad and experience a new culture and open my mind to new experiences and challenges. Although there may be some difficulties studying in a foreign country I believe the advantages are far greater.

Studying abroad offers one the chance to learn a new culture by allowing a person to immerse himself in that culture. A semester or a year abroad gives a person enough time to really learn and become comfortable with another culture. It is enough time for one to become comfortable enough and develop relationships and make friends. These relationships can last one a lifetime. Also, this would be enough time to completely learn a foreign language. True, it can be scary to go to a country and not know the language, but one will be with other students and being totally immersed in the culture it should take no time to learn the language. By the end of the experience one can be fluent in another language

This is also a good opportunity to learn to be independent. Parents will not be there to fix any problems one might have. It will be up to the student to work things out on their own. This independence can be a true character builder and definitely set one up to be successful after college.

One of the most beneficial aspects of studying abroad is the positive affect it will have on the resume. Employers, as well as, Graduate Schools look favorably on an international study experience. Studying abroad helps students to become more mature, self sufficient and have an international view on subjects. These qualities are all very attractive in the workplace.

There are challenges to studying abroad as well. For example, one can experience culture shock which can be overwhelming. However, if prepared for this one can adjust to it.

Have you ever dreamed of studying in other countries, traveling to cool places, meeting lots of different people, and picking up a language or two? In recent years, studying abroad has been popular as the world becomes globalization. A record said that "241,791 U.S. students went abroad for academic credit in 2006-07, up 8% from the previous year, and nearly 150% more than a decade earlier" (you can check it here). More and more students leave their own country to go abroad for their further education. They say that they can develop better with advanced facilities and teaching methods in those modern schools. By communicating with foreign students or staying a long time with them, a profitable experience is available to them. By the time they come back home, they are supposed to have a great advantage over the students at home in many ways. I quite agree with what they say. But as also an overseas student, one fact I would like to remind them of is that quite a number of overseas students stay abroad disappointed as they can not obtain what they hope for, let alone success. When they are abroad, they are helpless and have to be independent (I had exactly the same situation), which is quite contrary to what it is at home. They lack independence; they can not even tell right and wrong apart, and as a result some of them even commit crimes. Therefore, whether it is good or not to study abroad depends on the individual. So take more factors into careful consideration.…

The benefit of studying abroad in the context of a language course is indisputable. The student will find that rather than simply learning in a class, by exercise and homework, perhaps with some oral practice, that they will have to use the language to get by. However studying abroad will often place the student in situations where they are not able to get by with their mother tongue, even if it is English, which is widely spoken over many parts of the world.
