Perspective Taking Essay

Class Assignment One Everyone can view perspectives differently and sometimes it is hard to understand another person’s perspective. Many people do the things they do because they feel that their perspective is the right one. Personally I believe that sometimes people do not want to look at the others personal perspective because they know that they are wrong with their own. In other words, some people know what they are doing is wrong and do not want to do anything to fix it. In my perspective of being angry with my friend, I was angered that my friend who had been living with me for a week during the summer was not picking up after himself. I had to clean up all of his messes and had to make sure that our living area was not in complete disarray. It angered me because I had to clean up after him as well as myself. I feel that he should have contributed at least a little bit to our situation. We were both away from our homes and were both in the same situation and he just relied on me to be his personal “maid.” My response to this situation that I was dealing with was that I was very short tempered, and I did not want to communicate with my friend as much. He got the hint that something was wrong, but he did not have any idea about what was wrong. I tried to just blow off the situation and see if he was going to eventually start helping out, but nothing changed. Finally, I opened my mouth and told him that he needed to start helping around the place. He got super offensive and he stated, “I thought that room service was cleaning our room.” Some people expect things in life, and my friend was one of these people. My perspective changed after I looked at how this kid grew up. He had his parents and his grandma do everything for him. From doing the dishes to taking out the trash, this kid had never done a chore in his life. Sometimes you just have to look at the other person’s personal background and look at

I regretted that I hadn't spoken up and flat out said, "Hey, can we talk about our misunderstanding, and like, maybe you could apologize for thinking the worst of me so this elephant will leave and go sit at someone else's table?" But finally, I had to just focus on being grateful for the get together. I focused on the fact that the friendship is, apparently, still intact, we had a pleasant, albeit somewhat awkward visit, and shared some laughs. Most importantly, relatively speaking, it was just a baby elephant. So while he was still taking up a lot of space, it didn't squash me, only playfully, but annoyingly thumped me on the head with his…

In a world where there are many relationships available there is one that pertains to living a fulfilling life, friendship. Friendships arguably falls into three different categories, pleasure, utility, and virtue (Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics - VIII – IX, 121). These styles of friendships behave in such a way analogous to bonds in chemistry. Bonds require time and energy to fully form. The bonds between pleasure, and even utility is considered the weakest. These relationships usually stem from the innate reciprocal enjoyment or benefit from another party. Rarely would one call a mate that they have partied with for a favor. Instead they would call up the mate for pleasure such as going to a party. If one were to ask of such a favor in this…

When my friends are fighting I tell them many things, but one of the most important things I tell them is to treat others the way they want to be treated. When my friends don’t agree, I try to get them to talk about the problem and how we can fix it. For example, if two friends are fighting over another friend, I would tell them that they can all be friends and play together, because the friend they’re fighting over has enough room in her heart for everyone.…

Thousands of years worth of history passed down generation to generation through culture is not easy to maintain with the evolving world around us, but being close to the roots of your heritage is a priceless and unique aspect of everyone's life varying between families either greatly or only a tiny bit. In "Everyday Use", Alice Walker creates a short story telling of a mother and her two daughter's contradicting interpretations of heritage. In "Everyday Use", Walker uses point of view, symbolism, and characterization to portray how people should be connected to their deepest roots of heritage every day.…

Smalley also discussed some things we need to take into consideration before we fight with others. Some of his tips made me rethink how I currently picture how I look at discussions. One thing he said was to always listen to the heart; not the words of the other person. It reminded me that it is not about the words they are saying, it is about how they feel about it. Emotion plays a bigger role than just mere words. You can hear when a person is choking up, or really angry, but their words might say something different. Listen to these cues, and react accordingly. When I am talking to my best friend on the phone and we just had a fight, I always try to make her forgive me and say “I love you such much,” and she will say “I love you big time,” but I can hear the reluctance in her voice. She does not want to end the conversation with “I love you” she probably has a few choice words she would rather end it with. But in those situations I need to take responsibility for my actions. Never blame the things you do or say on anyone else. Your friend does not control you. You are responsible for you. It is mature to be liable for what you do. It shows how much you care about someone, when you tell them you are sorry for what you have done. I hardly ever take responsibility for the things I have done. Now, I do not blame others, I just do not want to admit when I have done something wrong. I feel like I have failed and I hate failure. When it comes to my best friend, I will always apologize. It may take week, but I will always ask her to forgive me and we can move on. The last important thing to remember is that you cannot make someone change. If you really cared about them you would never ask them to change. This also shows the problem lies with you. You cannot be happy with someone for reasons you can change. The only person you can change is yourself. I often times forget that I cannot ask someone to change just to make me happy. If they do not make me happy, I do…

I witnessed my “friend” bullying a freshman for the first time. I stood there not stopping my friend from verbally bullying him. After a while my “friend” started to push the freshman around aggressively. I thought to myself if I defend the freshman my friend would tell me something. But I had to do it because it was wrong what he was doing. I quickly pushed my friend away from the freshman and told him to stop and leave. But he didn’t listen and kept telling me to move. We both argued and then he got frustrated and walked away. I went with the freshman to the deans because he told me its not the first time he has done this. At that moment I knew our friendship wouldn’t ever be the same. I remained committed to the idea despite the consequence of losing my friend. I stood up for what I believed was right. I even prevented from a bully to do harm to others.…

I believe in respect. I believe that everyone should be treated fairly. I had a friend, well, I like to think I had a friend, who had the ability to make everything negative. She had the ability to make even the happiest person depressed. She was also very opinionated and and took down anyone and anything in her path. I have to give her credit, her opinion was always heard. But, that doesn't mean her opinion was always right. I would always try to tell her that something was wrong, or that she made someone feel bad, but she would never listen. She would just tell me that I was wrong and not her.…

Let us say that your friend is having a bad day. His car broke down and he has to pick his kids up from school in twenty minutes. He asks you to borrow your car for about an hour. You let him borrow it and he brings it back right on time and he thanks you. The next week his wife has his car and he asks to borrow your car again. You really need it and don't want to let him borrow it. So you make up an excuse and he responds by telling you that he just needs it for a minute and he reminds you that you let him borrow it last week. Now you kind of feel obligated to let him borrow your car but you really need it yourself. He starts telling you that you're not a good friend and you start feeling guilty. Stop and think about it. It is your car that you bought with your own money and it is your only form of transportation. All you have to do is tell him "NO." You don't owe him any explanation. It's not your fault that his wife has his car, and if he is a true friend, then you not letting him borrow your car will not mess up your friendship. If it does then he is the type of person that you don't need as a friend.…

Everyone has their own opinion. The person sitting next to you can have an entirely different outlook on something you do. Having different opinions is what makes for interesting arguments. Especially an author and a critic… like Steven Johnson and Dana Stevens. In the article “Watching TV Makes You Smarter”, Steven Johnson believes that TV does make you smarter, while in her article “Thinking Outside the Idiot Box” Dana Stevens completely disagrees and critiques his article. The two have opposing views on the topic. Both these writers use different examples of ethos, pathos, and logos in their articles to back up their opinion and make for an interesting argument. In my opinion, Dana Stevens overall did a better job at using ethos, pathos, and logos to back up her argument. “From the vantage point of someone who watches a hell of a lot of TV (but still far less than the average American), the medium seems neither like a brain-liquefying poison nor a salutary tonic” (Stevens, 2012, p. 298). This quote is what Steven really tries to prove the whole article and back up with her arguments.…

Yesterday, I was on my way home when I spotted a homeless man sitting next to a building. I parked my vehicle and went over to him. He seemed rather confused about what I was doing, and his first thought must have been that I was there to stare and make fun of him. After being told to go away, I simply said I was there to help. The debate went back and forth for a while until I finally was able to sway his opinion and get him to come with me. I offered for him to come live with me while he finds a job. I told him I would provide food, clothing, transportation to interviews, and toiletry items so he could keep himself looking presentable. We had an accord.…

Last week, it was my best friend’s birthday. So we all planned a nice birthday party. He asked all of us to come to his house three days before his birthday. It was supposed to be a small tea-party with a few friends and family members. As he is the eldest in the family, he asked me to come and help him with the preparations. A day before, we went to the market and brought the necessary decoration articles. We decided for a few minutes on the food and other things with my friend’s father. We also ordered for the cake from the bakery his father asked us to.…

First of all, I want my friend to know proper behavior because I truly care about my friend. If I see my friend make a mistake, I will make my friend know about his or her attitude. For my personal example, I had an experience about my friend who really likes to borrow others’ stuffs for her own benefit. I knew our friendship will be broken if I tell her not to do it. However, I told her about my opinion and showed my frankness for my friend’s future. While I kept talking about her bad habit, she eventually understood to the extent that she was selfish. After this, she highly cares other people first over herself. Therefore, I strongly believe that it is better to get involved in case people seetheir friends are about to make a mistake.…

Is self- identity created over time, or are we born with it? Self identity, also known as self concept, self perspective or self construction refers to how a person views themselves. Rebecca J. North and William B. Swann are both professors at University of Texas in Austin, Texas. In their article “Self Verification 360 degrees: Illuminating the Light and Dark Sides” they explain the self verification theory. North and Swann explain, “Self verification theory asserts that people are motivated to seek confirmation of their negative as well as positive self-views” (n.pag). They also note, “Because self views serve these vitally important functions, people become invested in maintaining them” (n.pag.).George Orwell is an English journalist and novelist. His book, Down and out in Paris and London, Documents the life of the lower class people in Paris and London in the 1920’s. Of these people, Boris creates his self-identity through being overly optimistic, Bozo creates his self-identity through being an artist, Paddy creates his-self identity through his self-pity and Charlie is through his lies. Boris, Bozo, Paddy and Charlie all do not match up with Swann and North’s self-verification theory.…

Everyone must have experienced a betrayal from one of their friends at least once in their life. I remember when I found out that my closest friend told the girl I liked that I thought she was ‘ugly’ and a ‘slut’. He ruined any chance I had with her; it was like he really did stab me in the back. It’s that painful strike, twisting around inside you, right through your spine causing a ferocious flurry of feelings to come bursting out; anger, sadness, betrayal. Even though you’re flustered with so many emotions the one that really sticks is betrayal. Being attacked by an enemy is expected but from a friend, that’s just…
