Purpose Statements, Central Idea & Main Points
Below are two sets of main points for speeches. For each set supply the general purpose, the specific purpose and the central idea/thesis statement.
G.P.: To persuade S.P.: To persuade the audience to study abroad.
Central Idea/ Thesis Statement: You should study abroad to because it will enhance your personal, academic, and career development.
Main Points: I. You should study abroad because it will enhance your personal development. II. You should study abroad because it will enhance your academic development. III. You should study abroad because it will enhance your career development.
G.P.: To inform S.P.: To inform the audience of the steps to getting a tattoo.
Central Idea/ Thesis Statement: The four steps to getting a tattoo include; shaving and sterilizing the skin, outlining the design, applying pigments to the design, and sterilizing and bandaging the tattoo.
Main Points: I. The first step in getting a tattoo is outlining the design. II. The second step in getting a tattoo is outlining the design. III. The third step in getting a tattoo is applying pigments to the design. IV. The fourth step in getting a tattoo is sterilizing and bandaging the tattoo.
Below are two central idea/thesis statements. For each statement supply the general purpose, the specific purpose and the main points.

Central Idea/ Thesis Statement: The pyramids of ancient Egypt had three major uses- as tombs for burial, as temples for worshipping the gods, and as observatories for studying the stars.

The pyramids of ancient Egypt were used as temples for worshipping the gods.
The pyramids of ancient Egypt were used as observatories for studying the stars.
