Personal technologies effect on modern day life Technology has had a major impact on modern day life. Everyone uses personal technology whether they realize it or not. Personal technologies include cell phones, laptops, and iPads. Personal technology has disconnected, driven, and assisted people in everyday life. Without actually watching for your use of personal technology you will not fully understand how it affects your everyday life. Sometimes putting the personal technology devices down is the best thing for you. Cell phones are one of the biggest personal technologies we use in the present day. Cell phones allow us to communicate with people while we are out doing our everyday running. We use cell phones to call people who we need or want to talk to. Cell phones also allow us to go on the internet without a computer. People look up any information they need to find on the spot. An example of using the internet on your cell phone would be if you are trying to find the best restaurant for a family night out. You would go to your internet on your cell phone and type in the search bar "best family restaurants" and it would give you the names, addresses, and phone numbers of restaurants near your location. You may also see the reviews on the restaurants given. You can also look up a specific restaurant and it will give you all the information on that restaurant. The location, phone number, and the website to see their menus and deals they have going on. Cell phones disconnect people from the modern day without knowledge of it. We tend to sit on our cell phones and go on social media networks or play games and not interact with what is going on around us. I was at a family reunion and was sitting on my cell phone on Facebook and was not interacting with my family. My family had long conversations and from those conversations they now have inside jokes. I do not know what the inside jokes mean because I was too busy sitting on my cell phone on Facebook instead of paying attention and interacting with my family. Laptops are portable desktop computers that allow people to take them while they travel. With laptops you need to have a charger and you may have a mouse along with it, therefore you would need to be able to store the laptop, charger, and mouse in a safe spot together. Laptops give you on-the-go access just as cell phones do because they are portable. The best use of laptops are for work or school related functions. You can use laptops to type out your papers for school. Now a lot of schooling is online and homework is done using the internet. An example of using the internet for school would be when you take online courses at Schoolcraft. You go online to the Schoolcraft website and go to black board, you sign in and get your homework assignments. Some may need to use applications such as Word or Excel, but you also need to participate in what are called discussion boards, which allow you to post the required information, view others' posts, and reply to others' posts. Laptops can also be used for social media networks. You can go on networks such as Facebook or Twitter, which allow you to post statuses, pictures, and videos. Sitting on your laptop on a social media network or even using it for school can disconnect you from modern day life without knowing it. By sitting with a laptop you are not getting the physical interaction with others and you are not paying attention to what is going on around you. iPads are a personal technology that is relatively new. Many people have iPads because of the convenience. They are smaller than laptops, easier to carry, and they even have waterproof cases to prevent water damage. iPads being smaller than laptops is a positive thing because they are not so heavy to carry while you are traveling. Waterproof cases allows people to use the ipads while they are swimming or doing anything else involving water, where as laptops do not allow that because if they were to get wet they would be ruined. Waterproof cases are a good thing for the reason if you can take underwater pictures or while you are in the pool you can look up any information you want to know. They are a bad thing as well. This is because being in the pool or doing anything that used to be a family interaction involving water used to be electronics free. This allowed you to be in the present with your family and friends. Where as to now you can take iPads to the pool or any other water interaction, which is causing you to not be in the present day. My boyfriend has an iPad with a waterproof case. My boyfriend, his whole family, and I went to a hotel for a birthday party and he brought his iPad with the waterproof case. We all then went into the pool to hang out and have fun. While we were all in the pool he was on his iPad on Facebook the entire time. He did not enjoy the fun we all had together playing Marco Polo and just hanging out. Instead he stayed on his iPad and now does not have the memories we all have and does not know what we all discussed that night. iPads disconnect you from modern day life, more than what is realized. Personal technological devices are used in our everyday life, sometimes without knowledge. Cell phones, laptops, and iPads can be a positive thing to have on-the-go. They can also have negative effects by disconnecting you from modern day life. Sometimes it is best to put your personal technological devices down and just interact and watch what is going on around you. Remember there is a life outside of a cell phone, laptop, and iPad.
