Personal Statement: Support Worker Position
I was made aware of for your part- time Support Worker position by my Atlantic Canada Studies colleague, Salina Kemp, and I am confident that you will find me to be the ideal candidate. I am extremely passionate about helping Mi’kmaw by using my past experiences with work, school, volunteer and extracurricular activities. Through these experiences I have developed a wide range of skills which include but are not limited to serving as an access point for the Project Team at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre . For instance, time management is a skill I developed through carefully organizing my priorities and sticking to them to meet urgent deadlines that ultimately resulted in successfully completing my Bachelor of Arts degree at St. Thomas University.
I obtained relevant experience for this position by working with the St. Thomas University on community – based and academic projects. One of the community-based and academic projects was developed by Andrea Bear Nicholas and me, as my honors undergraduate thesis, which was to create a proposal for Mi’kmaq Language Immersion Program in Gesgapegiag: A Language Nest for Preschool. While working at LMG, I had the opportunity to create a proposal for a walking, hiking, and snow shoeing trail that would be for Listuguj, and others to promote education on our land and to promote a healthy lifestyle. I started by researching types of trails, how to build and maintain it. I was interested in our Mi’kmaq medicines, place names, and animals, so I interviewed elders about the Mi’kmaq translation and their definitions. These medicines would be on a plague that would state their definitions in 3 languages, Mi’kmaq, French and English. This project is well underway this year, and should be completed this

Healthcare abounds with occupations dedicated to serving a variety of populations. Each profession has distinct qualities that warrant specific talents. As the daughter of a Registered Nurse, I saw first-hand the characteristics nursing required. Though I enjoyed learning about the human body, I knew nursing was not my calling. My initial educational goals and work experience were directed towards becoming a marriage and family therapist. After I finished my Associate's degree and married, I postponed my education to focus on raising my children. During this period, I judiciously considered my career options as I transitioned from a young woman focused on discovering her purpose to a wife and mother with a family depending on her guidance, support, and affection. Switching gears at this point seemed daunting because the risks transcended the investment of time and money. The requirements to successfully complete…

There are some effective efforts have been made to save languages in the world. One of these efforts is master-apprentices program which has increased the survival of languages. In this program young people learn their own language by older generation who teach them traditional customs and craftsmanship. For example, in California Native Americans are trained basket weaving in their own native tongue, because of this method it is enough about 300 hours to begin to speak fluently (Knight, 2000). Similarly, another successful master-apprentices program has been developed by academic Leanne Hinton of Berkeley and has passed on the knowledge and skills of indigenous Native American languages to the youth. As a result, this incentive can provide to maintenance of 25 aboriginal languages…

As a first-generation student, I am significantly influenced by the Student Affairs staff at my undergraduate institution. When I arrived at Ramapo College, I quickly realized I was not prepared for college-level work, if it were not for the Educational Opportunity Fund Program, I would have felt lost and would have struggled both academically and financially. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have had many Student Affairs professionals guide me to academic success and personal development. As a result, I made the conscious effort to work with the minority students on campus and accepted the position as a Resident Program Assistant for the EOF program. I worked with a diverse population of students where the majority came from low-income communities who had the potential to perform college level coursework. While…

Disability support worker; what does mean? To someone who is unaware of the term, they may think that it is just adult babysitting. Aside from that being offensive, it is so much more than that. It is devoting your time to spend with a person and to make them feel like person. To one person, it may not seem much to some, but to the right person, it could mean the world. Having the opportunity to meet individuals and making them feel empowered meant the world to me, and the smile on their face for their success. The best feeling is helping children with something and watching their faces light up as they discover what they can do all by themselves. While in fourth and fifth grade, I was a part of the buddy program at my school which entailed spending every lunch in the special education classroom at my elementary school. A trait I possess is being sequential and that is useful for the career I want because it will help me with staying organized and grading papers. I am an analyzer, I like to know what is going on around me and love to know how things work. This is a trait that comes in handy with being an elementary school teacher.…
