When I graduated high school in 2013 I attended a community college in Pennsylvania for a semester. My thought on college in high school were “I don’t really want to continue my education for another four years”. That was until my high school counselor called me to her office seeing that I didn’t apply for schools. She explained that I wouldn’t be able to get a good job or ever own a house without a college degree, so that fear pushed me into continuing my education. My parents were the same way they also told me “most jobs would hire a college graduate over a high school graduate”. That was the final push towards the path of…

My dream for the next four years is to achieve a Physician Assistant degree at St. John’s University. As I transition to college from high school, I understand how there is no one in the world besides myself to help me reach my goal and it will require hard work as well as motivation to reach that point. At times, I feel overwhelmed with the struggles that arise in achieving my degree, but that would not stop me from my main point in coming to this school. I am able to connect my experience to the experience the Nolan’s and my dad went through when it was their time to achieve their dreams. I find it to be very lucky to go to school in New York because I am already one step ahead of my game to fulfill my target since New York is the place where there are many opportunities for everyone. Hence, having a motivated outlook on life, everything that is impossible will be…

Growing up my mom has always encouraged my siblings and I to continue our education to as far as college. My mother never really got the chance to attend college because her family could not afford to put all their kids in school. She had seven siblings and an extra bill for school was not something her parents were able to afford. I consider myself really lucky to be alive in a time where there are so many opportunities to be able to afford college. If it were not for scholarships and financial aid, my mother’s story would be repeated once again. Through financial aid, the door for a college career is opened for me and I’m willing to enter it. My biggest motivator to push myself academically has been my…

Today, many students like myself all over the America have walked down the hectic aisles of high school and have sat in some of the largest lecture halls in college. As kids, we were somewhat taught that going to school and getting an education would be the key to our success and thought that if we didn’t fulfill these expectations, we would end up homeless and live a terrible life. For so many years during my educational career this was the mentality that I believed in. Although this may be over exaggerated, I believe that this may hold some truth to the many college students all over the world. It is almost like we volunteer to go into debt and deal with all the stress that a college education brings us because we feel like it will get us…

I believe that everyone should have the ability to go to college, no matter their socio-economic standing. My father was laid off form a six-figure job and has been unable to be rehired anywhere close to the salary he was paid previously. I now see what it is like to live below the poverty line and recognize the privilege of those with financial freedom. I adhere to a very liberal view of the world. Living for 16 years in the left-leaning state of Washington, has caused me to possess some of the most liberal and progressive viewpoints one can hold. I respect all forms of spirituality, as long as it does not disrupt other’s spiritual quests or lack thereof. I am atheist, but believe in human spirituality and dedicate a lot of my time to learning…

College is a very difficult decision in many people's lives around the world. The stories of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs show that sometimes college would not be the best idea for some people. Even my father, who dropped out of college, is very successful and supports his family wealthily, while not having to do as much work as most people. However, these successful people went through difficult times and failed much in life, before becoming who they are now. While many people believe college is not worth it, it really is, because college is a pathway for many people into a great career, while also allowing graduates the gain of knowledge from the experience.…

There comes a time in a person’s life when they need to start thinking about their future. Of course, kids tend to think about their futures from an early age. We’ve all wanted to be princesses and ninjas, pirates and fairies, superheroes and singers. But there’s a time to start thinking about your future reality-wise. In the modern era, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to obtain a job without an education past that at the high school level. While college is set up as a luxury, it’s evolving into a necessity. College is something I definitely see for myself in the future although not for the same reason. Personally, I would like to be able to learn about what I want to do and learn how to do it to the best of my ability. Going to college…

To say that I dedicated numerous amounts of hours deciphering the purpose of why I’m going to college would be a lie. For years I have always thought that college is somewhere you just go after high school. I believed that it is only somewhere you go to start your career and in turn make a lot of money. In fact, this “purpose” is what has been institutionalized within U.S. citizens under this Capitalist system. We are told to go to college so we can get jobs where we can make money, buy a big house, start a family, and live the lifestyles we have always dreamed of. For a very long time this was my only goal in life: to go to college so I can get a well-paying job to afford the lifestyle that I want to live. I never put much thought into what…

Ever since I was 10 years old, I have dreamed of going to college. Despite all the obstacles I have faced, I still wake up every morning with a fresh attitude and a new goal that will put me a few steps toward attending college. I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, in a neighborhood with huge dropout rates, crime rates and a lot of drug activity. Therefore, the first step I have to take is to choose what I want to do for the rest of my life, given that I refuse to be a statistic. My mother always encouraged me to continue my education and getting to school on time and going to school everyday. Also, completing my work assignments on time, so I don't fall behind on my school work is advantageous to my learning experience. Although ninth grade is trying…

Aside from the inspiring role models I gratefully have and the never-ending encouragement my family provides me with, my personal motivation for proceeding onto college are countless. Some of the larger reasons why I choose to go to college are because I see that college offers a variety of opportunities that is not offered anywhere else. For instance, college offers courses that will further one’s experience in a certain field, preparing one for the real world before one can successfully thrive in the fast-paced and volatile world. Not only will I obtain and expose myself to “the tough stuff,” which includes countless demanding college courses, I am also building a stronger profile of myself with the challenging classes I will partake for professionals who will review my resume when I apply for a job or go to a job interview (Graff 225). Going to college will allow me to be an independent individual because it will be essential for me learn how to make a living on my own. I will no longer have my parents or siblings to help and look out for me anymore. I am required to take control of my life and basically learn how to survive on my own. My college education will be highly beneficial because obtaining a college degree and/or a Bachelor’s Degree (BA) will open more doors for me considering that the fact that some employers “do not even interview applicants who do not hold a B.A.” (Graff 233). Therefore, I will have an advantage over those who do not have a B.A. Many may argue that there have been successful stories that did not involve a college education, however the chances of that are very low. Furthermore, my desire to be influenced by a new and diverse group of people leads me to go to college. I wish to be influenced by more and intelligent people who hold perceptions contrary to mine, so I can…

What sets my story apart from many is that my goals never changed despite such difficult odds. Yes, I had to stop and start a few times, but my drive to succeed in terms of my education never wavered. There are a lot of people that start school, stop and then move into a career or trade, with school far from their minds. Not me. My parents dreamed of me finishing and I’ve always wanted to be a pharmacist, so our dreams intersected and the culmination is my continued path to finish college and be successful. There isn’t a roadblock big enough to block my path now; as an older and wise student with a life full of exceptional cultural, educational and life experience behind me, I am well on my way to accomplishing those same goals I set for myself so many years…

As I contemplated writing this essay, my thoughts ran adrift with snapshots of profound moments of my life. I can never forget experiences that have resonated with me: like assisting my elderly neighbor whose children would never visit, packing an extra lunch every day for the kid who always sat in the back of the cafeteria without anything to eat, or lending a hand in the wake of a tragic flood that destroyed my neighborhood. These moments are not just sentimental to me; they taught me empathy, and are the chief reasons behind my enthusiasm for higher education, and why I'm driven to serve public interests.…
