I have spent much of my life in two entirely different worlds. Born and raised in America, I spent many of my summers visiting my grandmother in Cheonan, South Korea. During the long summer visits, I attended art academy, Taekwondo classes, and Korean language school. I met and befriended many people as I immersed myself in the city and its culture.…

While at UNCW, I have established a solid academic foundation that has helped prepare me for graduate level studies. This fact is validated by my placement on the Dean’s List multiple times while at UNCW and by my 4.0 GPA. The courses I have taken in Statistics, Experimental Psychology, Personality Psychology, and Theories of Counseling, have provided me with the confidence to excel in a graduate program. I have also gained experience by completing a Counseling Practicum while at UNCW. As part of the practicum, I volunteered at the Onslow Women’s Center, an organization that assists victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. I have participated in workshops on trauma-informed practice, completed training to become a hospital advocate for sexual assault victims, and assisted with case management and coordination of services for clients. Working in the domestic violence shelter and answering crisis calls has been an eye-opening experience. Caring for people who are working to heal the wounds of abuse, violence, and sexual assault has inspired me to focus on trauma counseling as I move forward in my…

I wasn’t terribly sure what I wanted to do with my life, nor did I have any idea how to get where I thought I wanted to be. My relative lack of passion wasn’t seen as a deterrent in my affluent Texas town, though, as it was a place where nearly all high school students went on to college—it was the only option we really considered or that was presented to us by our families, teachers, and counselors as a post-graduation plan. So I began the requisite search by looking first at nontraditional college environments, for while I had done reasonably well at my large and impersonal public high school, nor had I flourished either. It seemed to me that if I was going to spend the next four years of my life in school, I might as well try a different tactic than the one that had allowed me to coast rather unremarkably through high school.…

Through my application to The University of Toledo, a multitude of characteristics of my personality is displayed. However, other aspects of my character were unable to be expressed in any of the questions asked, as I am a remarkably dynamic person. One personality trait that may be inferred from my application is my passion for learning. Throughout my years of schooling, I have constantly searched for ways to greater my knowledge and expand my learning abilities.…

Muslims started to resist Western education since the fall of the Sokoto Caliphate to the British in 1903. Boko Haram which means “Western or non-Islamic education is a sin” was founded in 2002 by Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf, a religious teacher, in Maiduguri. The group resists not only Western education but also the western culture and modern science. They do not believe that the earth is round or in Darwinism. They also do not participate in voting during elections as they believe that the country is run by non-believers. The group, officially known as Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad which means "People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad" was dubbed Boko Haram by the residents of Maiduguri because of its strong opposition to Western education, which it sees as corrupting Muslims.…

Time and effort if put together, definitely leads to success. I still remember that Friday night, I was debugging a hospital management project. I didn’t realize how the night drifted off so quickly, but finally I arrived at the solution. These comprehensive efforts were aptly rewarded when my project was implemented for a cardiac clinic. This experience in developing a client server based system infused into my mind the love for computers over electronics, and aspired me to delve into the field of software engineering.…

I am in love with the world. I’m lucky because my whole life thus far has been a mosaic of different cultures and places, which has given me a really open and exposed mind. Being born in Peru, I grew up with the charm of the Incan culture. My ancestors were leaders - unique, smart, and innovative; and I am proud of it. When I was seventeen, I moved to Mexico to get my bachelor’s degree. Even though I went by myself, I was more excited than scared because I was going to experience a new culture, learn new things and make my world even bigger. I spent seven years in Mexico after which I moved to the United States.…
