Personal Statement: My Journey To Become A Hospital
As the saying goes, “The journey is just as important as the arrival.” My journey began during my visit to the hospital at the age of eleven. I recall my visit was due my involvement in a car accident and was rushed to the hospital for care. I recall during my first couple of hours, I felt anxious and scared, but I left the hospital feeling happy and complete. I felt complete because it was through this visit that I knew what profession I wanted and that was to work in a hospital. At that time, I was not sure of what type of doctors there were, but I knew that I wanted to be a doctor who specialized in childbirth.
Two years after this incident, I left my homeland Ghana and traveled to the United States of American to complete my education.

Unfortunately for me, that meant that I had to complete the second half of my senior year at a new school in a new country. Nevertheless, I felt very anxious, but excited as well as prepared to face the challenges that came with the move. In fact, I saw this as another opportunity to flourish my knowledge in learning about a new diverse culture and my dream as a doctor. During those two and half years I spent in Germany, I became much more confident in my dream to become a doctor. My confidence grew when I committed myself to volunteering with the American Red Cross and the United Service Organization. During my time with the American Red Cross, I volunteered with the hospital at the base. It was through this experience that I saw how hard working each medical personnel was and how passionate they were about their job, which in fact made me wish more to be like them. The United Service Organization (USO) is an organization involved with serving the army soldiers and their families stationed in Europe. Through this organization, I respected and admired how the soldiers put their lives on the line for others to live. This insight in a way made me realize that if they were willing to lose their lives for others, then I am more than willing to spend my lifetime in healing others, especially women in

I have obtained two jobs working alongside physicians and nurses. The first job consists of transporting patients throughout a large hospital system. Every day is filled with numerous activities as the hospital is a level one trauma center located between suburban and urban areas. I chose to work nights to gain more responsibilities and autonomy. My responsibilities include transporting patients throughout the hospital system. I have learned to communicate with a diverse population and explain my role with regards to care. During night shifts, I was tasked with transporting patients out of the emergency department and into the main hospital. Before this shadowing experience, I knew that pursuing a career in medicine is something that I was interested in, but I never had a real experience to examine a typical doctor's life. After the first week of shadowing, I started getting a sense of what it is to be a doctor. Becoming a doctor is not something easy. Every time I went to the office, there was a big list of patients that doctor Eloy had to meet. He had to be careful about the way he acts and the way he talks with patients, nurses, and other doctor. Even though it seemed so hard at the beginning, I enjoyed this experience and I learned a lot from it. I learned that being a doctor requires more than going to medical school. Medical school is just the first step. I learned that a…

I, like most pre-medicine students, thought I knew what a career in medicine was all about. After all, like most, I spent hundreds of hours shadowing a number of physicians and volunteering in hospitals. It was only through my two year experience as a medical scribe, both in the ER and in an oncology clinic, that I truly understood all the faces of medicine. Medicine, contrary to what I thought prior to my scribing experience, isn't always glorious. As a scribe I have witnessed many of my patients, both in the ER and in the oncology clinic, die and I have dealt with the emotional toll that it brings. I have sacrificed my social life, family life and often times given up my free time to my work. I have even slept on hospital grounds in an effort to make back-to-back shifts. Yet, despite seeing and living through the less glorious sides of medicine, I continue to wake up hungry every day to accomplish my dream of becoming an oncologist. Medical school will, undoubtedly, be a challenging and gruesome experience. It will test my will, mental power and commitment to my goals and thanks to my experience as a scribe, I can truly say, with confidence, that I am ready for any obstacles that come my…

During my childhood years I can vividly remember the cold, late nights my mother was called upon to help save lives. Without the time to find a baby sitter and due to my father’s occupation as a truck driver, she was forced to take me along with her to work. Although I was told to stay in the nurse’s lounge and watch television – I found the hospital corridors intriguing. I often would sneak out and roam the halls looking for anything that was of interest. It was during one of those nights that I recall encountering people as they rushed through the hospital sliding doors seeking help for their loved ones. I can remember feeling that I could help, but I knew that I was too little; furthermore, I would be in trouble if one of the nurses or staff who worked in surgery with my mother had seen me. I promised myself that I would help people as well one day and that is when I decided that I would pursue nursing as a profession.…

The road to success has always been paved with many obstacles. When I first decided on what I would plan on being in the future, I was a little girl (about four years old). Many people in my family were a part of the medical field, mainly nurses. As I continued to get older, I received more practice and more knowledge about the medical field and I would go back and forth on whether I would become a nurse or a doctor, and I still face that conflict today. However, I am positive that I will stick to the medical field. I have discovered other career paths, and I can never see myself loving them as much as I love the medical field. The way medicine works amazed me and I always found it interesting to help people. When I started learning more about the medical field, I learned how difficult it would be to get where I needed to go. Each day, I try as hard as I can to get closer to my goal of becoming a doctor.…
