Motivated to Graduate High School

Growing up poor is one thing, but growing up poor without a father figure has to be one of the hardest obstacles in life. Well anything worth having in life is worth working for. That is why when I saw the opportunity to be the first male in my family to graduate high school, I ceased the moment.
Failing at anything was not an option so I motivated myself a lot. My mom worked two jobs and I started to feel like the only thing to do was trying and help bring in some extra cash to the home. So at the age of twelve years old I started my first job selling new papers and magazines. Instead of doing drugs and hanging out with the other kids I stayed busy

Growing up in a single parent home was often difficult. I seen my mother struggle a lot as I got older. I did everything I could to try to help her but I did not help enough. It was also difficult because my mother did not have much education. Seeing her struggle with bills and keeping enough money for our personal reasons made me want to better myself, not only for me but my mom. My mother was so independent that she did not want help from other people. Most of the time my grandpa would come over and watch me for the hours my mom worked. And while I was with my grandpa those hours I learned how to cook. And I really liked doing that. So I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.…

From a young age we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up, never how we expect to become when we grow up. I was well aware of what I wanted to become, but not sure how to get there until I started high school when my counselor explained to me the importance of having a full portfolio with a wide range of extracurricular activities. Then it became clear to me, I needed extracurricular activities to become who I wished to be. Throughout my high school career I’ve participated in several extracurricular actives such as math club, soccer and UIL One Act. In the future, I want to participate in these activities or anything similar to those I participated in high school.…

I believe that everyone should have the ability to go to college, no matter their socio-economic standing. My father was laid off form a six-figure job and has been unable to be rehired anywhere close to the salary he was paid previously. I now see what it is like to live below the poverty line and recognize the privilege of those with financial freedom. I adhere to a very liberal view of the world. Living for 16 years in the left-leaning state of Washington, has caused me to possess some of the most liberal and progressive viewpoints one can hold. I respect all forms of spirituality, as long as it does not disrupt other’s spiritual quests or lack thereof. I am atheist, but believe in human spirituality and dedicate a lot of my time to learning…

Being a leader in my house and at work I have always lead with the motto “I’ll never ask anything of you that I have not done or isn’t willing to do myself”. I am determined to go to college even if there are some setbacks that make harder for me to do so. For example, when I was in 10th grade I found out that I had scoliosis, and the only way that I would be able to treat it was through surgery. At the time that I had found this out, I had already planned out my sophomore year; I was going to take 2 AP classes and 2 math courses above my grade level. At the time I truly believed that I was going to be able to go through the surgery, take all my classes, and very least get decent grades in all my classes, including my AP classes. However, that semester ended up being my worst.…

Through UA Early College, I believe the program can help me accomplish my goals of expanding my studies for my majors, prepare me for when I become a full time college student, and uplift my chances of being accepted into college after I graduate high school. The classes that UA Early College offers will benefit me to obtain the information I need to earn the degree for my majors. For instance, the principles of biology 1 and 2, general chemistry, and general physics 1 and 2 are all in which the courses that are required to aid my studies in health science to apply in the work force of dentistry. Also other courses that relates to fine arts would as well assist me for my other major in art so that I may one day be qualified to be an art director.…

All through middle school I struggled dealing with money. Money was a major setback from everything I wanted to do. I was a two time athlete and a full time student. Softball was my all time favorite. I was able to join travel teams but could not due to money. The money issues definitely started to get to me more and more as I watched opportunities pass by. Some days I would consider giving up my goals and giving up the things I loved. Witnessing my parents struggle was hard on me and my siblings. I was raised with the beliefs that there is an importance of having security in all aspects of life, whether that is financial, physical, or emotional. These were, and still are, the ultimate objectives I have for myself and every action I take and have taken has been formed around this sentiment. My parents taught me that “dreams are the touchstones of our character” and that it is important to dream big while remaining clear on goals and realistic with decisions. On the path to deciding my future, their advice remains with me and assists in establishing myself in the goals that I have set.…

My last year of Junior High School turned out to be the most stressful and nerve wracking, yet most memorable year of my life. Being a Grade 10 student who was counting down my days in the institution, I was determined to be active in all school events, contests or organizations while maintaining a high academic ranking and a booming social life. I decided to acknowledge my potential to do anything that I wanted and challenged myself to join in all extra-curricular activities that sparked my interest. Whether it may be scaling a Narra tree and culturing Escherichia coli to participate in the Division Science Fair, dancing to a controversial pop song for a pageant, performing a piece for the Buwan ng Wika in a Chinese costume, or constantly running around to gather news materials for the school paper— the flow of activities that pulled on my heartstrings never ceased. However, given the number of things…
