The legendary American Military Hero, General George S. Patton once said, “Moral courage is the most valuable and usually most absent characteristic in men.” I also believe that moral courage is one of the most valuable characteristics a man can have, in that to truly be a man of character, you must first have moral courage in order to live and defend your values. Without moral courage, values become something that are easy to live when things are easy and you are just coasting along, but when the going gets tough, those without moral courage will be more apt to yield to the tide of ease, popularity, or pressure. I believe my values, along with my moral courage which has been tried and tested and proven to be unbending, complement the Army Values of the United States of America. My values help me to better live the Army’s values, and the Army values help me to better live my values. My core values fall under three categories: 1) devotion to my religion; 2) loyalty to my family and friends; and 3) dedication to self-improvement. The army values are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless-service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.…

The utmost important aspect of a leader is their ultimate goal, which brings me to my question. What is my goal as a leader in the various phases of my life and career? My ultimate goal is to inspire those who are committed to my leadership. To inspire them to achieve greatness, to surpass their own expectations, to become leaders themselves - these are my aspirations. If I do not succeed in accomplishing this, then, I will be lacking a key piece of what separates the average from the exemplary.…

The company is struggling with consistency of performance among its teams, not all managers are demonstrating the capability of leading and creating self-sufficient teams. “Too many managers assume that if we just put people together on a team, they will know how to function effectively” (Dyer JR, Dyer, & Dyer, 2013). Organizations and its leaders must understand the critical role that they play in the effectiveness of a team. Team members must be trained to be cohesive and contributing members. It is why managers play an enormous role in the efficiency of a team. They guide the daily operations and overall organizational atmosphere. Managers can create poor performing teams or high performing teams, create a path for success, and produce…

What is leadership? Peter Drucker famously stated that “management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.” Great leaders possess social intelligence, a zest for change, and above all, vision that allows them to set their sights on the important aspects. Leadership always requires attention, maintenance and even sometimes a little modification. My leadership philosophy was formed by the actions of leaders, both good and bad, I have served with throughout my military career and life experiences. I believe to be an effective leader you have to lead by example, be humble, and compassionate. To me, leadership is the ability to inspire others to believe in themselves and their mission. A good leader can influence others to complete difficult tasks in the absence of supervision. As leaders, we have a responsibility to develop young Soldiers into future leaders for the Army as well as training them to be physically and mentally fit individuals. In doing this, we encourage young Soldiers to develop their character, live the Army Values, and prepare them for the battlefields of life. When…
