The second organization that I had the opportunity to volunteer for is Goodwill Rescue mission. They created this organization in 1896. Under the leadership of Rev. Lawrence Sutherland, the purpose of the organization moved from being a struggling institution to one with a nationwide reputation. They shared the love of God in Christ by providing food, shelter, spiritual guidance and instruction for the poor and the homeless in Newark. According to Goodwill Rescue mission, they affiliate with helping the individuals directly rather than send them someplace else to fend for themselves. Each year in November I volunteer at The Basket Brigade. We assemble boxes full of food for the less fortunate to have for Thanksgiving/the holiday season. After assembling the boxes we each take 4-5 and deliver them to anyone who has requested them. I served as a student volunteer for Hammer and Nails a non-profit organization that works to serve the community with the mission of improving the quality of lives for low-income families through home repair. Most of the home owners in Canton, Ohio faced financial hardship and could not fund the extensive repair and renovation that their homes needed and thus relied on volunteer services for help. Through my time spent with Hammer and Nails I savored learning about the families within the community and how their lives were impacted by the local volunteers throughout many years. I enjoyed helping in the office with administrative work and with home renovations through painting and carpeting. I have been a volunteer with the local Special Olympics program for a little over a year now, and it has truly been one of the best experiences. I love being able to support and motivate the athletes to do their best and to just have fun being active. Special Olympics has also lead me to other opportunities I would not have known about before volunteering. For example, I recently applied to help volunteer at the Miss Amazing program in Sioux Falls coming up in a couple of months. I volunteered at Texas Humane Heroes, a local animal welfare organization that gives a homeless dog or cat a chance of finding home. It is a nonprofit organization that benefits from the involvement of volunteers. This was a very unique experience because I got to work with a lot of different volunteers and staff members. There were different volunteering opportunities from foster volunteering to helping out around the place. I helped around the place with other volunteers. We cleaned the dog and cat cages and washed their bowls. It wasn’t fun to pick up their waste, but we got to play with the puppies and the kittens. Habitat for Humanity originated at Koinonia Farm, which is a small Christian farming community located outside of Americus, Georgia. Clarence Jordan brought the idea to Millard Fuller, who is the founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International. They developed the idea of “partnership housing,” calling for families in need of a home to partner with volunteers to build affordable homes. In 1975 Fuller and his wife Linda established Habitat for Humanity with one clear vision in mind “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” Habitat's ministry is based on the conviction that to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ we must reflect Christ's love in our own lives by loving and caring for one another. Our love must not be words only – it must be true love, which shows itself in action, this is the full forces that lead Fuller and his wife to establish this organization. Habitat provides an opportunity for people to put their faith and love into action, bringing diverse groups of people together to make affordable housing and better communities a reality for everyone. The idea of Habitat for Humanity is to work in partnership with God and people to build decent, affordable, houses in which people can live and grow into all what God has intended. The Fuller’s vision has become a successful reality that has presently helped build over 500,000 homes and helped over 2.5 million people worldwide. Habitat for humanity is operated based on two main sources: donations and mortgage payments of the homeowners. Donations generate from individuals, foundations, and businesses - their monies are used to purchase land and materials. The no-interest mortgage payments made by current Habitat homeowners greatly contribute to support the construction of additional Habitat homes. I've volunteered in a number of places and many events, but the one's that have left an impact on me is my time spent at The Women's safe house and Guardian Angels shop and food pantry. They both helped my family through the crisis of leaving my abusive father financially, emotionally, and physically. At the Woman safe house I couldn't help but see the kids and teenager that I was babysitting and see myself in there place and I quickly became that mentor I and help them see past the darkness and into their bright futures. The third program I helped with was a soccer tournament that my fellow Bhutanese immigrants organized between teams from other states. As I volunteered there, I helped prepare food for the players, I picked up the trash, and I gave water to the players after the game.
