Personal Statement: Gir Girl Scouting

Everyone aspires to be a leader. No one wants to be the quiet person in the room that sits back, while looking for the guidance of others. The desire to be a leader troubled me greatly in the past, because I wanted to be the one that innovated new ideas. I knew I was a quiet kid, but all of my worst fears were solidified when I learned of my first grade teachers thoughts of me which were “ a follower, not a leader”. I tried to brush it off, and disguise my true feelings, but that is not the way I wanted others to perceive me as in any way. Although it is difficult to replace these preconcieved notions, I have consistently worked to show others what I’m made of. All I needed was the opportunity to prove others that they were wrong. Especially since I like to think that it is the quiet ones we need to look out for.
At the age of six, I struggled to find the meaning behind all of the little iron on patches, and what they had been leading up to. The Gold award, awarded to 5.4% of eligible girls, is the most prestigious award, above a silver and bronze. It definitely isn’t attained without hard work and dedication. The guidelines of the project are clear: you need to exemplify leadership qualities and create a lasting impact in the community. My idea to work with the elderly and the youth group from my church came immediately. Observing my community, I noted that the elderly and youth don’t communicate or interact with one another. I believe that those types of relationships are essential in life, due to my own connection with my grandmother. She is one of the funniest people I know, and even though she is 90, we can still connect on a personal level and laugh at just about anything together. I want others to experience that for themselves, because even though they may be older than us, they are still young at heart, and have all led interesting lives with stories beyond
