Personal Statement Essay
Since I was young, I have had a desire to help others who were in need. I was always keen on learning about the framework of society. I was enthralled by figuring out why people do the things they do, what drives them. Throughout my life, this desire to help people stayed with me. First, it was through informal sessions of friends in high school needing a listening, non-judgmental, shoulder to cry on. As a child I wanted to pursue a career as a dentist and to help people understand the importance of dental hygiene. I attended Mansfield University for a year after I graduated high school where I lived on campus, met new people and no parents to be in my business. Classes became secondary and hanging out was primary. I received my freshman year grades and was in awe because I knew that I was not taking it seriously. Needless to say, I took a few years off of schooling. I then worked for several companies that ranged from customer service to debt collecting to restaurant hospitality. The money was good at the time but I started to realize that I wanted more out of life, and wanted to further my education. I went back to Mansfield University in 2008. This is when I felt the pull of psychology and change majors. I later came to think of this decision as a revolutionary step that turned my attention to what I now am determined to make a calling, and a profession, for a lifetime, for my lifetime. I knew what I wanted to do, but, I still had the dilemma of applying my full self. Even after the time off, I found it hard to focus on school work as much as I should have. All these classes were showing me how to help others, when really, I needed to help myself. I had a few life lessons to learn, and personal issues to understand before I could devote myself to anything.

There was this one professor that really made the materials in psychological disorders class relate. I sometimes went to her office to ask about classwork, and found myself asking how to get through daily

During my time at Gwynedd Mercy University, I experienced many hardships that today made me a stronger student. When I first attended Gwynedd Mercy University, my parents encouraged me to choose a major where I would have a career in allied health. Unfortunately, deep in my heart I knew it was something I did not want to pursue but I knew it would make my parents happy. As the semesters went on, I tried to keep up with the studies but science was just something I was not good at. This led me to struggle and choose another major. It took me a while to finally choose what I wanted to do and I always wanted to pursue a career that would help people in ways other than allied health sciences. I chose to declare Human Services as my major and I became very content. However, things were still not easy for me. The middle of my college years, I became very ill. I suffered from many illnesses that set me back on attending classes. At this same time, I grew into depression and anxiety because I did not want to use sickness as an excuse, but knowing that I was not in my best physical and mental state really discouraged me. As my illness went on, my family was hit with my mother being the only source of income. This led me to having to work extra hours at the crack of dawn before classes, attending classes, then…

My name is Regina Goforth-Lewis. I was born and raised in Michigan. As a young child, I went to four different elementary schools. I ended up graduating High School from the last of those schools, Southfield Christian High School. It was here that I decided I would eventually work with youth in some way. My life took a small detour before I got to that point. I attended the Oakland Community College shortly after graduating, however, decided to work full time and pursue a different career avenue: Retail Management. Although this was exciting and perfect for me at the time, I knew it was not my calling. Around the age of 22, I decided to enroll back to in college part time and follow the original dream of working with young people. I studied under the Social Work/Mental Health field. I never completed the program to receive my Associates Degree; however, I do have 66 credit hours accumulated. During this time, I loved college and my internship, which later became a fulltime job at the H.A.V.E.N. I worked there as a Supervised Visitation Specialist for many years. While working in the social work field and also in the communications field, I met and married my husband and we started a family. I always knew if it was feasible I would want to be able to stay at home with my children for as long as possible and I was fortunate enough to be able to do this for almost 13 years. Along the way I held down several part time jobs to earn extra income for the family, these jobs always included working with youth to some degree, such as a shift supervisor at the local Parks and Recreation Center’s concession stand or at the Elementary School where the children attended as a lunch room monitor. I also volunteered time at my church as a Sunday school teacher, a senior high youth advisor and a Deacon. I read to students at the library and taught American Sign Language (ASL) to hearing children. After 15 years, my children’s father and I divorced. I currently find myself as…
