Personal Statement: A Doctorate Of Physical Therapy
I do not want to sound like that cliché student that say they excel in science curriculums or enjoy helping people, but I do. I attend a high school that is geared towards science and I exceeded the expectations of courses I have taken. My mother has been a nurse for almost 40 years, which stood as a major influence on my choice of major and why I am pleased when helping people. I may be that cliché student, but I am much more. I am a problem solver; my brain is always cranking to decipher the problems at hand. I am a dreamer; I dream of having a successful, healthy, and happy life. I am motivated; once I put my mind to something, very little can stand in the way of what I wish to achieve. A Doctorate of Physical Therapy is what I want to end my college journey with, no matter how long it takes and how bumpy the journey is, because it is what I dream of. …show more content…
If it wasn’t for this broken ankle, I may not have found what I want to do for the rest of my life. I spent countless hours in physical therapy working to get my strength back to be prepared for the fast approaching basketball season. As I was lying on the table, my therapist forcefully stretching my ankle, I realized that this could be the job for me. I have observed many hours of physical therapy, with and without a broken ankle, and I am certain this is what I will do for the rest of my

A few hours later when I went to the hospital, I discovered that I had torn my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Initially, I did not know what to expect from the situation, but I came to realize how much it would affect my life. The ACL functions as a ligament that connects the tibia and the femur. It provides stability in the knee, and with this injury, I could not participate in competitive soccer for 10 months. To undergo this painful experience at such a young age is extremely difficult; however, I chose to embrace the situation rather than let it destroy me. I could no longer play the sport I loved, but I could not change anything about that; I could only control my attitude in this predicament. I went above and beyond at every physical therapy appointment, no matter how strenuous/painful the workouts were. Times frequently came…

Physical therapy involves treatment through physical means for people disabled by illness, accident, or congenital handicap. It seeks to improve mobility, relieve pain, or minimize permanent physical disabilities (Occupational Outlook Handbook). The physical therapy career field interests me for many reasons. It revolves solely around the human body, which is a fascinating topic to learn about. This area of expertise is flexible and rewarding. There are many specialty areas to choose your career from; some of these include orthopedic, geriatric, neurological, and pediatric. As well as flexible concentrations, physical therapy can have flexible work environments. These jobs can be conducted in many types of facilities such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, private offices, rehabilitation clinics, assisted living facilities, educational institutions, sports centers, and home health agencies (Occupational Outlook Handbook). The work environment and broad range of specializations are major factors in my choice of this career path.…

While physical therapy is an exciting and rewarding work environment, professionalism must still be maintained in the work place. In order to be the best physical therapist possible, professionalism must first be demonstrated while obtaining a degree in a doctor of physical therapy program. Three components are essential in order to demonstrate professionalism in a doctor of physical therapy program: integrity, curiosity, and taking pride in ones work. Since the inception of the first doctor of physical therapy program in 1993, the healthcare field has shifted into allowing direct access for physical therapists, along with allowing them to evaluate the patients’ condition without a diagnosis by a medical doctor.…

Providers who lack expertise for working in cross-cultural situations may experience difficulty conversing effectively with either patients or family members, which may lead to an inadequate management of the diseases or conditions characteristic of a particular population. What if people lived healthier lives, practiced preventive medicine, and took precautions against illness and disease? My days in the physical therapy department often made me think about the prevention of injuries as well as the injuries themselves. I was already doubting my future career choice as a physical therapist. Although I loved the science of it and helping people, the lack of variety within the field and its limited options for growth bothered me. I needed a career that helped a large number of people, emphasized prevention and primary care rather than tertiary care, and would continually challenge and motivate me to improve. Knowing that I really did not want to pursue physical therapy as I had originally planned, my thoughts wandered to the area of public health, particularly health management.…
