Personal Statement: A Career In The Medical Field
When I was six years old I broke my right arm playing on the swing in front of my house. I remember my parents nervously driving me to the emergency room. I had an x-ray taken and the doctor said I would need a cast. My parents explained this to me, but after the long day I was overwhelmed and started crying that I didn’t want a cast. They got me to calm down enough so that the doctor could start putting the cast on. As she was working, she started asking me about school, and friends, and then she asked me what my favorite color was. “Pink” I said. “Well we will get you a pink cast then” she responded. When she said that I perked up a little. “A pink cast” I thought, “wow that’s pretty cool”. At the time, I didn’t realize it but she was healing …show more content…
The ER doctor’s ability to help people and make a personal connection is a quality that initially drew me to a career in the medical field. I value this quality because my parents installed in me the importance of helping your community and respect for others. However, apart from humanitarian causes I also have interest in other aspects of becoming a doctor. Working in a faced paced environment is where I am most comfortable. I like it because it forces me to be more creative and resourceful to adapt to new situations. To me, not knowing what will happen each day or what challenges I will face is exciting. Therefore, I want to be an Emergency Room Physician so that I can improve the health of my community in a way that also allows me to have a career that I …show more content…
As a freshman, I have only been able to take a few courses in the college of Letters and Science but the ones that I have taken I enjoyed. My favorite course so far was Bio-150: Introduction to Biology. The material from this class was interesting and it opened my eyes to other fields of biology. My favorite part of the course was applying what I learned in lecture to lab. Every week, I would look forward to having smaller class discussions with my TA and lab partners about the material and our lab experiments. The lab challenged me to think further past basic information which helped me better understand the course material. My classes are not only giving me a strong base for my education but they are also teaching me valuable lessons such as critical thinking, communication, and team work, skills that will be critical in my future.
In addition to classes, the college of Letters and Science has also provided me with access to an advisor. My advisor has one of the best track records and has been named one of the best pre-med advisors in the Midwest. She will be extremely helpful in my future because she not only advises me on class selection, but she also can help me through the medical school application process. Already, she has helped plan the next three years of college so that I graduate on time and she has helped connect me to a volunteer

"Make a difference today for someone who is fighting for their tomorrow"-Jim Kelly. Growing up residing in a small, under populated rural area I noticed how my community lacked access to health facilities and providers. Noting that this was a necessity to have, yet so scarce, I decided that being a health care provider was the career for me. I grew up always surrounded by the health care setting; my mother was a Lab Technician who worked with several Physician Assistants. I was often in her office during after school hours of my elementary/middle school years.…

My initial motivation was to study medicine. However, this novelty of an idea wore off as I have learned that the road to success and pursuit of happiness in life is not necessarily a straight one. This has encouraged me to follow my heart no matter how daunting the journey can be. William James once said “the greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being has the power to alter his life by his attitude”. It is deeply rooted in this philosophy that I desire to become a physician assistant (PA) where I hope to provide quality healthcare to the underprivileged, an area of medicine, which I have noticed to be dramatically underserved.…

Waking up in the middle of the night coughing and gasping for air occurred on a regular basis for me as a child. I slept with an inhaler and a nebulizer next to my bed in the event of the next attack. My asthma attacks were frightening for my parents and especially for me as I felt as if I was on the verge of death whenever I suddenly could not breathe. Although I was always in and out of emergency rooms and doctor visits at a young age, having tried everything from nebulizer treatments to bronchodilators, I was always comforted by the doctors and nurses who always took the time to explain and alleviate any concerns and anxiety I had. Seeing their devotion to their profession and for patient care has motivated me to pursue graduate study in the field of nursing to invest my future to coordinate and implement quality healthcare for others.…

There have been many occasions in my life that I have spent time in hospitals, nursing homes and by the side of a sick relative. When my grandfather was dying of cancer, he spent as much time as he could at home with his family by his side and when the time came, he was transferred to hospital, I was 14 at the time, still very young I knew it was not about how I was feeling, this pain was his and my grandmothers. I helped look after him for the two years he was diagnosed and it was during that time, I knew where my heart was and that was nursing. With my own experience of being in and out of hospital with two complicated pregnancies, I was in awe of the nurses and midwives who did everything they could to make me feel secure and safe, I was inspired and made an already certain career choice, even more evident.…

There I was laying on the field, during the second half of my football game, tossing and turning as I held my right shoulder in agonizing pain. I looked up only to see the trainer looking down at me with a concerned look. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Repeatedly I tapped my shoulder as I was struggling to get the words out. He helped me up and walked me back to the sideline. I waited for what seemed like hours for the game to end. A few days later, I went to a local doctor to get an X-ray. The doctor told me that there was nothing wrong and that the pain should subside in a couple of days, and it did. Later in the season as I went in for a tackle, I felt my shoulder pop. Immediately I was in pain and thought to myself, “ It happened again.” This…

When I was a young child, I witnessed my sister receiving stitches on her head. We were jumping on my bed when she fell and hit her head on the headboard. I was inspired by the medical professionals who treated her. Although this was a traumatic experience, it helped shape my aspiration to help others. Serving and improving the lives of others is a fundamental duty that I believe should be a part of everyone’s personal mission. Working in healthcare is the path that I discovered as an ideal way to accomplish this goal of service. In particular, I intend to eventually become an anesthesiologist where I will assist patients during medical procedures.…
