I am very comfortable with my decision to be a community counselor that attempts to solve widespread community problems that are social or psychological in nature. In ten years, I hope to have become an experienced counselor who can go on from working at a clinic and do private practice. Some of the potential barriers that I think I will face will be working for a boss and interacting with all different kinds of people that I am not used to working with and that are very different than me. Some of the things that I will do to overcome any challenges I am faced with is to keep focused and have a positive attitude and constantly remind myself what my goal of counseling is. In addition, I will try to surround myself with positive minded people, I won’t give up on what I am trying to accomplish, I will change my perception towards challenges if need be, and will continuously believe in myself and not stop.

● Look at the career that you are currently considering. What skills do you need to develop this career? How will you develop these skills? What skills do you already have that will be suitable for this career? Explain.
Looking at the skills needed for my career in counseling some of the most important skills are having empathy, being a good listener, having social and communication skills, and being a critical thinker. I believe I have all these skills already, but one can always improve. The way I hope to continually develop my skills further would be by practicing them in my personal and work life and by talking to others in the counseling field in addition, to reading specific books related to these

counselor. For all of us, it is a lifelong process” (Journal of counseling and development, 2006 p. 116. Vol. 84). When thinking about the characteristics of a counselor, I think about the qualities I would seek in a person that I would like to have as a friend or confidant: Patience, empathy, a good listener; conversely, well versed and skilled in their area of expertise, life experience and ethics/values. Counselors work closely and intimately with individuals and have to maintain appropriate boundaries while balancing the ability to establish trust and empathy. “ An effective counselor is one who works with clients to produce a positive outcome, a positive change in the…

Within society, there are many occupations to explore and chose. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) results showed that my personal career strengths fall under the area of teaching and counseling. Currently, as a school counselor for a high school in Duncanville, Texas, a suburb outside of Dallas, I find the results of the assessment to be very accurate. Making the decision to become a counselor is a rewarding and exciting career choice. In the world of counsling, there are many individuals who place emphasis on not just basic implications, but also on theoretical studies that usually are a part of their professional and personal experiences. As times have change, so have educational curricula. Counselors and educators, their philosophies, and educational standards continue to change; therefore, educators have to take on responsibility and think more about their chosen roles within the educational system and the various means of combining theory and practice. The general examination of the different roles in counseling, personal career assessments and ideological relationships each play a role in the area of education and counseling. As a result of the choice as having a career as a counselor attaches the decision to continue to research theories and then integrate them into areas of education helps to build a solid foundation, which will in due course will led to the creation of a personalized educational philosophy. The choice to be a counselor or educator gives an individual a chance to become more connected and familiar with both primary and present-day educational theories.…

This author recently completed an interview with a professional counselor. In this authors opinion when you get a chance to ask a fellow counselor questions about being a counselor it is rewarding. Counselors will always need to seek consultation with other professionals, weather those professionals be counselors, teachers, doctors, or individuals in the court system. Anytime someone has a chance to go an interview with these professionals, it helps with professionalism and knowledge of what these other individuals expect from you as a counselor to help all clients.…

Everyone needs hope that life can be wonderful, positive, and worth living for. I like to see others as they can become. As a professional school counselor, I can provide the incentive for positive change. Every person needs to feel that he or she amounts to something, that there are great possibilities or great expectations. Each person is capable and worthwhile given the right opportunities and chance to overcome past mistakes. People change when they are given hope, encouragement, and a way out of the troubles that consume them. As a professional school counselor, I have the opportunity to help students change their lives by developing a trusting relationship and helping them see ways to become better. Ultimately, the student has to make that choice for him or herself. I can only offer change, but that change has to be a decision the student makes of…

Hello Dr. Aaron Oberman and fellow classmates. I’m excited to be taken this course because I’m almost at the finish line of completing my degree. I have been working in social services for almost 15 years helping adults meeting their needs while aiming at becoming self-sufficient. I enjoy my job, but I’m burned out, meaning my job no longer brings me the same satisfactions as it did 15 years ago. I reevaluated my life giving consideration to my age, family and happiness and decided it was time for a career change. As an undergrad student, I recall an instructor telling us in life most people will have a job and a career. Social Services is currently my job and school counseling will be my career. With age I have learned helping others…

As a child I loved playing dress up, I loved going to Tea Parties, and I loved playing with Legos. When I was little I found no problem with doing science experiments on my Barbie’s, or having princesses play Legos; however, as I entered kindergarten and first grade I found those two worlds weren’t supposed to coexist. Girls were supposed to play with girls toys, and boys were to play with boy toys. I decided, that was best and gave up my Lego set to the boy next door and focused on doing girl things. Next came second and third grade, where teachers begin to ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up”? Boys say things like: a military member, a lawyer, an engineer, a fireman, a scientist, a cop, and the list goes on and on. Whereas girls are kept more in a box with only certain professions being traditionally appropriate. I decided, that was correct and that I would be a science teacher so I could still be a part of the scientific world I so thoroughly enjoyed, yet still be traditionally…
