Being in the medical field for the past ten years, I have seen the growth and changes in the medical field. When I began my nursing career as a medical assistant, I noticed many other nurses continuing their education to be able to have greater hands on approach in nursing. This opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that a nurse can do, whether it’s with direct patient care or being a resource to patients and other nurses around. After completing my RN in May of 2015, I decided that I really enjoyed being a mentor and teacher to other nurses. That is why I am continuing on with my education in hopes to one day receive my Master’s degree in Nursing and be able to utilize the knowledge and skills that I build, to educate patients. I still…

As a reluctant and nervous nineteen-year-old, I walked in to my first day as a nurse aid to a brightly lit, and mostly bubble gum pink Women’s Service’s unit. I worked there through nursing school; and happily accepted a job as a nurse after graduating. Nine years, and a lot of joy, tears, and learning in between, I continue to call this place my home. There is much satisfaction in being part of the continuum of care of women and families during the antepartum, labor and delivery, and the postpartum period, as well as the care of her newborn baby, and for some women, before and after gynecological surgeries. This mostly happy area of practice is not immune to tragedy, and the to have ability to be with a family and counsel them in their…

During a two week mission trip to Trujillo, Peru I volunteered in a medical clinic. My life purpose; becoming a nurse, was revealed to me while comforting children with distended abdomens due to malnutrition and contaminated water, as well as elders with crippling Rheumatoid Arthritis. This heartbreaking experience, gave me a cultured view of global healthcare needs. My goal as a nurse is to bring joy and comfort to patients. A girl from my highschool was diagnosed with stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma at age 14 and throughout her treatment, she spoke so highly of the nurses that made an impact in her short life. I wish to provide this kind of meaningful compassion to a patient one day.…

As a staff nurse in the emergency room I had to develop leadership skills in order to effectively deliver quality care and maintain safety in a fast paced environment. By identifying safety risks associated with the assignment of inexperienced nurses to triage and discussing the breakdown in communication between physicians and staff, caused by inaccurate triage acuity levels, I effectively facilitated the change in the process of assignments to triage. Once the need of education, mentoring and nursing collaboration to support inexperienced triage nurses in role transition was acknowledged significant positive changes were experienced in staff communication, patient safety, and teamwork which ultimately improved morale. Although, I have not held a management position I have succeeded in resolving conflicts and de-escalating patient and family complaints in the hectic emergency room environment by listening and identifying the requests and views of the patient and…
