Personal Reflection: Exposure To Diverse Cultures
These are the communication competencies that I feel strong because I feel that I already have an exposure to many diverse cultures. When I was still in the military, criticism is always part of my job. At first, I took those feedback personally that I couldn’t concentrate in my work. I felt like I was being judged. But then realized, that those opinions really matter and improved my overall communication with my superiors and junior personnel. The military offers many types of culture, talents and intelligence, and being exposed to this type of setting was very overwhelming. I made sure that I apply my own culture teachings when I make my decisions. I always relate my situations to other people that way it is unbiased and fair.

Listening, responding to others emotions, assertive communication, asking effective questions and refusal skills. Listening to others is key to mastering the other skills in interpersonal communication. Verbal listening is being able to restate in your own words what was said and asking questions about what was said. Non verbal listening is making eye contact, staying still and sitting or standing in a relaxed way. I will apply listening when the teacher is talking to me about an assignment I will ask questions if I don't understand what was said and I will stay relaxed and keep eye contact with the teacher. Responding to the emotions of others is done verbally by not saying what is known and asking questions. Non-verbal actions are watching body language, making eye contact and watching facial expressions. Emotions reflect so stay calm. I will apply this skill when my friend is upset I will stay calm, not saying “wow you look upset” but rather saying “is there anything I can do for you.” Assertive communication is used all the time but sometimes it's done in the wrong way. Assertive communication is not passive, also not super aggressive but rather a mix of the two. Verbally, you must stand up for your morals/beliefs and taking responsibility for your actions. Non-verbally, you must listen to people's opinions and wait for them to finish their thoughts. I will use…

Having cultural competence is something that is gained through experience with other cultures other than your own. This means understanding that different cultures do in fact exist and one must be aware that we are all different with different cultures. For me a time that I connected with a different culture in a work environment was a few years back when I was working as a driver and my assistant was an African man, very nice man, who was new to the job and I had to train him by showing him how things get done properly. When we would communicate it wasn’t that bad since he had studied the English language back home he only had some words that he couldn’t pronounce, so I would help him.…

Several of my areas of strength are centered around my profession in child protection and children's mental health. I feel my interpersonal communication skills are one of my best personal traits. Effective communication consists of being able to speak clearly and professionally, while being knowledgeable at the same time. Communication has become one of the key parts to my success in both my work life and in my personal life; as communication is key to my marriage and any relationship I build within a team and workplace. I accredit my ability to effectively communication verbally and in written form to being an attentive listener that is open to suggestions and feedback. I believe my written communication is a strong point for me because I am very detail oriented, at the same time I am aware of my need to be more precise and less detailed in some aspects.…

Some strength’s I have is not frowning upon other cultures when working with clients. I never judge or challenge clients beliefs or culture. I learned to accept people as they are, and not who I think they are. I asked questions to learn about client cultures and backgrounds to better my understanding of client’s behaviors or persons. I try to stay updated with historical facts. I also take annual training on cultural diversity in the work place, which I also incorporate and apply to in my daily personal…

I feel as I have many strengths in communication but the top two that come to the top of my head are fearlessness and multilingual. To expand on that, with fearlessness comes an outgoing personality and that helps me with communicating to everyone. I am able to talk to anyone that is willing to talk back and if you came and heard the conversation you would think that I knew the person for years when in reality I only knew him or her for a few seconds. This helped me when I was a child I always had a lot of friends sometimes to many to even talk to all of them but I found away, all those friends were from different groups or cliques, and that shows that I can fit in with anyone. As for being bilingual that helps now and in the future. Now I go to Spain and I communicate with everyone from there and am able to get along with everyone where if you don’t speak the language you might not get that opportunity. As for the future, most companies are looking for people who have more credentials and what’s better than being able to speak another language.…

Excellent listening skills are a big strength I bring to the counseling profession. This strength has been developed through years of schooling and on the job training. I currently work as a phone representative, and it is very important to have good listening skills to know what the customer is asking for. A second strength I possess is being a friendly person. This strength has been developed through having good influences throughout my life. I use this skill every day at work and in my personal life. The third and final skill I possess is being an excellent communicator. This strength has been developed through years of schooling, giving presentations in school, and on the job training. The communication competency that I have mastered is communication appropriateness. The ability to employ a communication behavior that others and including yourself expect to be appropriate during an interaction. I think that communication appropriateness is very important because people can judge you by it and it determines your communication competence. Having an effective and appropriate communication shows that you have interpersonal skills and sociocultural knowledge. Knowing what is appropriate and not appropriate shows that I have respect for other culture and society.…

There are many areas of focus in nursing. This paper will focus on transcultural nursing including the review of a graduate student’s personal culture and how to incorporate cultural actions into nursing practice. The Giger and Davidhizar Transcultural model will be discussed and applied to the graduate student. Transcultural nursing has been defined as a humanistic and scientific area of formal study and practice in nursing which is focused upon differences and similarities among cultures with respect to human care, health, and illness based upon the people's cultural values, beliefs, and practices, and to use this knowledge to provide cultural specific or culturally congruent nursing care to people (Leininger, 1991). The U.S. Bureau of the Census (2010) for the Houston, Texas population showed over 25 different ancestry cultures, demonstrating the need for culturally sensitive and culturally competent nursing care. A culturally competent nurse needs to understand his/her own world views and those of the patient, while avoiding stereotyping and misapplication of scientific knowledge. Cultural competence is obtaining cultural information and then applying that knowledge as reviewed from the online article from K. Fernandez and Fernandez in 2012. Also the culturally sensitive nurse communicates in a way that reflects sensitivity and appreciation for the diversity of another. It is conveyed when words, phrases, categorizations, etc. are intentionally avoided, especially when referring to any individual who may interpret them as impolite or offensive (Giger et al., 2007).…

We live in a world where no one is the same. We all go through things because of the way we look, speak, what we believe in, our social status, or where we come from. We are all different. Those differences are what makes us special. Sometimes what makes us special makes us feel left out too. I have felt left out in some points of my life. I think everyone has felt left out at some time.…

Culture is a delicate word. If you spoke to a Sarah Buonauro exactly 12 months ago I would have told you a definition of culture that revolved around sameness. Coming from my background living in Northern California going to schools where students were so similar. I came to Southern California with no idea of the cultures in the area. Glendale seemed like a nice place to live and it is for a big city. The culture of the area and the culture of my school site were nothing like anything I had seen before.…
