Personal Narrative: Youth Conservation Corp.
Story Karen was very scared and nervous when she went to YCC, the Youth Conservation Corp. It was an 8 week long paid youth work program during the summer in Isabella, MN in the boundary waters. She was really scared about the ordeal, but wanted to make some money. Some of Karen’s sisters went, so her parents thought she should go, too. Because Karen’s parents thought it was too much time and money to drive her, she had to get a ride with a complete stranger who was also going. Karen’s parents dropped her off a liquor store parking lot in Waverly, MN. Karen was scared and anxious waiting all alone next to Highway 12. She waited there for about half an hour with her her big backpack, as well as multiple changes of clothes including hot weather clothes, sleeping clothes, swimming clothes and …show more content…
She missed her family and her dog, Fritz, but she really missed her kitties, Fluffy Igor, Leo, and Tabby, as well as multiple other farm cats. At the environmental learning center, the students did lots of work, but also some fun activities. Some of the fun activities were going on field trips. On one of the field trips they went to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, and spent the day at Fort William, an old fur trading post. Back then, you didn’t even need a passport to cross into Canada. Karen also remembers going to Ely and Two Harbors, but she does not remember what they did there. For the work, the class often built small dams in streams out of rocks, made fire clearings in the tall grass to prevent forest fires, made trails through the forest, and went on five to ten day “spikes”, where you lived in the woods in groups of six, five students and one group leader. You would have to take everything you would need, including food, in your backpack. It was all very hard work. When they went on the spikes, they had a small variation in food to eat, and what they mostly had for breakfast was bulgar wheat cereal, a very bland cereal made from various wheat seeds. The dish was

My personal mission statement is to be the best that I can be and work hard to help others be the best they can be. This statement is important to me because I have always found that I am at my best when I am helping people, whether its helping people at my job or at the grocery store. There are many things that fall into place with that, which to me, mainly includes education, because I am a student and I work in a college where I work with students and I listen to their problems and relate to them. So education is very important in general, but to me Community and Industry Education is very important and important to a lot of people. First off I have attended Tarrant County College and I have gained so much from that experience. I have gained…

I volunteered in Salvation Army to provide help in coat give-away program. There was a big box filled with not arranged coats for both genders and all ages. I took off all coats from the box and put them on a large sheet that helps me to divide the coats into different categories: boys, girls, women, and men. I folded each group and returned it to the box.…

Friday. T minus 15 hours till the last day of camp. The Saturday volunteer cancelled. My game plan was crumpled up and trashed. “Why hadn’t I thought of backup plan?” I asked myself, on the verge of pulling out my hair. I hadn’t taken into account all the variables and now I was receiving the repercussions. I had no idea becoming the Transportation Coordinator for a camp would be so stressful.…

One might wonder what a fifteen-year-old was doing standing atop a thirty-yard dumpster, chainsaw in hand, and yelling, "Give me more! It can hold more!" During my ninth grade year I saw an opportunity to complete my Eagle Scout project, helping the Lenape Valley Church remove massive piles of downed pine branches fallen during an early March ice storm, creating an eyesore and complaints from the local community. The project I was tackling was Herculean, and I, compared to now, very inexperienced at leading people. But it is Boy Scout’s duty to give back to his community and I had promised that the enormous piles of branches and snow would be gone before Easter.…

Though I hate to admit it, used to be more comfortable following directions than giving them myself. I grew up a shy girl with maybe one or two close friends. I followed the teachers’ directions, listened to my parents, looked after my sister, and remained diligent in my studies. This doesn’t seem so bad, however I was not satisfied with my personality. I was too timid, expressed no unique thoughts, and had almost no independence. This all changed when I was almost ten years old and entered 4-H, the West Hawaii 4-H organization which was geared towards community service and volunteer work to address the four H’s: head, hands, heart, and health.…

About nine months ago, I made one of the biggest changes in my professional life, that would have profound impact on my non-profit that I lead. After not being satisfied with the disorganization of the non-profit. I made a change similar to the re-orientation discussed in the one assigned readings (Nadler 1989). I knew if I didn’t make the changes, my non-profit would have to go into recreation mode within 5-7 years (Nadler 1989). I knew once the company was in recreation mode, it would not be long before the company would be extinct (Nadler 1989). I got rid of most of our departments and created new departments with different organization structure, volunteers, expectations, and rules.…

I volunteered at Texas Humane Heroes, a local animal welfare organization that gives a homeless dog or cat a chance of finding home. It is a nonprofit organization that benefits from the involvement of volunteers. This was a very unique experience because I got to work with a lot of different volunteers and staff members. There were different volunteering opportunities from foster volunteering to helping out around the place. I helped around the place with other volunteers. We cleaned the dog and cat cages and washed their bowls. It wasn’t fun to pick up their waste, but we got to play with the puppies and the kittens. We also had to greet customers and inform them about the cats and the dogs that they had up there. In the afternoon, we had to walk the dogs. So many volunteers and I, took the dogs out.…

Everyone has their own community or organization for which they belong to. Within that community you tend to find who you are and what you are about. For me I found my identity in being an outdoors man. Being an outdoors man at my young age seems to be rare at this day, but that doesn’t prevent me from doing something I love and appreciate. Growing up with my family full of avid outdoors men helped influence me and only made my identity stronger.…

This past Summer, as part of my social justice service hour requirement, I volunteered as a big buddy at the Miracle League of Green Bay.The Miracle League is a program that allows children and teens with a disability to play baseball. A big buddy helps one of the players run the bases and hit the ball. Every week you play a different team but have the same buddy. As a big buddy it is also your job to communicate with the player and get to know more about them. My favorite part of this experience was getting to know my player. My player (name), was an eleven year old boy. When I first met him I thought it was going to be hard to relate or talk to him however, as the season went on I realized I was totally wrong. I asked him about what interested…

As the single child in a family with working parents, I spent the most time of my childhood living and hanging around with my dog. This experience might be one of the reasons that I am very compassionate to animals and sensitive to people’s needs. My voluntary work is in a welfare house called Alenah's home. I love working there because I like seeing the smile face of the children there – even some autism babies don’t smile facially, I believe they can feel the love when being caressed softly.…

I have the experience of volunteering for two times. Both schools that I went to are very poor school as most of students come from neighbor countries such as Myanmar and Cambodia, whom their parents immigrate illegally to Thailand for working opportunity. Also the school director tries to help this children by give them opportunity to study without tuitions fee, which is make financial support from the government is not enough. Therefore, my friends and I went to give the necessary stuffs such as sport facilities and some amount of money that my friends and I did the donation from kind-hearted people. We also educated them in various topics such as teach them English daily use sentences and basic economics in term of how to saving. The reason that I choose to teach them how to saving is I found that their family financial status is not good, so it is necessary for them to use money correctly and make sure that they will not overspending.…

The summer before my freshman year, I was recommended to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum of Medicine. This was an amazing organization that would help me explore a future career in the fields of medicine. I was excited about the learning experience, but I was extremely anxious about being by myself for two weeks. The forum was hosted at UNC- Chapel Hill, I was five hours away from my family. I knew I couldn’t just pick up the phone call my mother for help like I normally would. Coming to the realization that I would have to learn to do things on my own was a bit shocking.…

The heat in Georgia started to overwhelm me in June when it reached 100 degrees outside. All I could wear was t-shirts and shorts to keep me sane. It was 2012 I tuned 16 about a month ago, and I knew I had to get ready for cross country season. I was getting ready for a short run when my mom came to talk to me about leaving to run an errand. The errand had a special meaning. I didn’t know why, it wasn’t anything bad because she always left with a bag of vegetables or some type of food. My mom loved giving back to the community. But this errand felt special to her. The curiously built up every day. It made me feel uneasy. She devoted her time on the weekends and weekdays for this "errand”. I got the courage to ask her why it was so important…
