Personal Narrative: Working With The Portland Police Department
I have been with the Portland Police Department for five years working on the night shift. It has been fortunate to work with my co - workers they all seem to have shown me get leadership skills and work ethics. Even during our busy work schedule we seem to associate even when off duty as well.

One evening we received a call of a man yelling and screaming in the intersection of A Street and Main. Upon arrival my partner Officer Gay and I approached the subject whom we recognize as Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson is known in the neighborhood whom is generally reasonable when sober and not high. However, tonight Mr. Wilson is under the influence of something powerful. Mr. Wilson becomes belligerent and combative and starts punching myself, my partner and other officers. Ultimately we handcuffed Mr. Wilson during the tussle and while placing Mr. Wilson inside my patrol vehicle Mr. Wilson bites me on my forearm causing my skin to break and bleed. Mr. Wilson laughs out loud and yells “I have AIDS and now so do you.”

Once we arrived at the police station Mr. Wilson was still belligerent and combative when escorting him to the booking area and the jail cell. During this time Mr. Wilson made threatening comments “watch your back and your family, I am coming after

Wilson filed a formal complaint against the department and I was served noticed to speak with Internal Affairs about the incident. During such time I decided to do the following: meet with the Sergeant and other shift members (whom were present during that time) and convince them not to let things get out of hand. Also, tried to convince them that they should admit their wrongdoing and plead for a suspension rather than taking the risk of losing their jobs. However, in the end my co-workers and Sergeant decided to take their chances. This put me in a place in which I decided to let the Internal Affairs Unit investigate the incident in discovering the

Secondly, though the sergeant was following managerial instructions, it is every supervisor's job to keep his/ her subordinates in check for the sake of their growth and that of the department (Waters, 2004). Therefore, he is at fault for not taking Officer Robert off Tibet's supervision after suspecting an improper relationship between them. Thirdly, Officer Roberts is at fault for not knowing better by blindly agreeing to engage in a sexual relationship with a married co-worker, who happens to be a "ladies' hound." Therefore, she should not blame anyone for her uncalculated decisions. Finally, Officer Tibet is also at fault for not exercising the expected standard of…

I have a uncle who retired from DC as the first district commander before continuing on to be the assistant chief of Atlanta police for 8 years, before retiring a second time, resulting in me having a positive view of law enforcement. Also, the parents of several of my friends are part of law enforcement. This experience allowed me to understand what officers do when they are not out on a designated call (such as patrolling) and allowed me to see how people react to officers from the officer’s point of view. This helped to solidify my positive view of law…

I went on my ride along on Tuesday, April 30 with the NM State Police. I rode along with senior patrolman Israel Rodriguez. I had a lot of fun and think I learned a lot about how law enforcement actually works. The officer showed that he is always thinking about the law and how he has to be very careful in what he does so that he doesn’t get god evidence suppressed in court because he makes a small mistake. He said that it’s hard enough to get evidence admitted sometimes even when you collect it lawfully. We started out by cruising I-25 until we noticed a southbound vehicle with the driver not wearing his seatbelt. We pulled him over and gave him a citation and went on. We then received a call about a hit and run coming into town from Deming so we parked out and looked for the vehicle to come by that fit the description that the dispatcher gave us. We were waiting when we received another call about suspected child abuse on a 6 month old girl. As we were driving back to the station we kept getting more interesting information about the case. It turns out that the alleged abuser is a deputy with the Sheriff’s office and LCPD had already responded to the domestic violence call and didn’t take any action against the officer. The child had been returned to the mother with red marks on her neck, legs, and back and the mother had taken pictures. Officer Rodriguez spoke with the mother and heard about the officer’s previous use of intimidation and force when they fought, but that she didn’t want to proceed with charges, just that she wanted the incident documented. Officer Rodriguez wrote up a report and we jumped back on the highway when almost immediately we were lights and sirens toward a vehicle vs. truck collision on 185. We raced over there and jumped on the scene in which the motorcyclist was very injured and they ended up calling the helicopter to airlift him to the El Paso trauma unit. After a while Officer Rodriguez…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

Officer Barton joined a big city police department six years ago. Officer Barton was a high school graduate and he was fluent on three languages such as French, Spanish and English. Officer Barton had difficulty adjusting to the police department at beginning after graduating from the academy due to the apparent bonds of loyalty and secrecy that the department had. He had to assimilate the new subculture that the officers had and create a bond with them. Robert Barton, like most of his peers, started out slowly and was overawed by the total process, but with time he began to feel, think and act like a cop. He wanted to protect and serve the community from criminals but the reality with the streets and social status that he sought, within the group; he quickly accepted the norms and values of his peers and of his field training officers. After three years in the patrol division, he was reassigned to the Gang Task Force that consisted of 26 investigators, 1 supervisor form 6 jurisdictions that formed a tightly knit work group. This group consisted of a homogeneous and cohesive group of bilingual individuals that identified with each other by having the same values, attitudes, and beliefs in relation to their job. Due to this tight relationship, the task force was able to control gang activities. But for the group to achieve this, the task force skirted the law and sometimes conducted illegal searches and stopped individuals that where known not to be related to gang affiliation. They were times where arrests were made without probable cause. Even though Officer Barton tried to be neutral and stick to his personal values but he felt that he needed to prove to the rest of the group that he was part of them and play a blind eye to those activities that were against his beliefs (Harry W.…

Police officers are government officials who are appointed to enforce the law and maintain order in society. While placed in dangerous and stressful situations, a law enforcement official has been trained to administer the law in an unbiased way that will maintain the trust of the public and not violate a citizen’s rights (Cooper 1930). While police are trained for this there is still a major problem known as abuse of authority. Abuse of authority occurs when men and women in law enforcement disregard policies, rules, or laws in which they are trained and are to properly administer while on duty. One form of abuse of authority is police brutality. Police brutality is the use of excessive force by an officer in the form of physical abuse, verbal abuse, and through psychological intimidation (Mangan,2000).…

    Law Enforcement Deviance

The use of excessive force and evidence planting are two forms of police deviance that are cited in the Rampart Independent Review. These acts of deviance are not exclusive to the LAPD, as there have been many incidences nationwide regarding the use of excessive force and tampering with or planting evidence by police. Excessive use of force continues to be a major problem today. One of the most notorious cases of excessive use of force by officers was the case involving Rodney King. The Rodney King case not only contained excessive use of force, but also the falsifying of police reports (Mangan, 2000). The LAPD’s officers and supervisors downplayed the injuries to King as minor scrapes and bruises. The officers involved in the beating reported that King attacked officers, resisted, and increased his level of resistance. The video tape, however, showed a much different story. King is seen in a defenseless position on his hands and knees as officers circle him and beat him repeatedly with their batons (Mangan, 2000).…

Individuals engaged in law enforcement activities can define police brutality as the process of using excessive force. In addition to the abuse of power by the police force, the term is also used to illustrate the misuse of power by individuals in the municipal, correctional facilities and other facilities subjected to reforming and retaining criminals. In a case reported in the year 2011, SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team, killed a 31 year old man in a mistaken identity (Roberts 1). It is evident that several law enforcement individuals have been conducting careless investigations. It is evident that these cases are rarely reported either because the victims are uninformed of their rights, or the victim is afraid that same police who committed the misconduct in the first place will also be involved in investigating the abuse cases.…
