Personal Narrative: Why Is He Sleeping There?
One afternoon while Akitani and Jack were walking home from school, they noticed this time, their short cut through the woods was not the nice calm walk they had grown accustomed to. They suddenly heard a noise coming from a corner. Next, with their own eyes, they saw a man that was lying on the side of the path they always took.
Akitani: Why is he sleeping there?
Jack: I don’t know, just ignore him. As they approached the man sleeping, they notice that there was no movement. The body is still like a fallen tree and as calm as the rest of the woods. Yet, it looks like a misplaced object among an organized environment.
Akitani: Wait, he isn’t moving at all. Jack: What do you mean?
Akitani: When people sleep, their stomach moves up and

I could hear the river roaring in all its glory as I approached Jason’s lying place, but apart from that there was complete silence. Not even a bird chirping in the background could be heard, which was why I liked it there, it was as if I was alone with my brother again. I stopped, searching all around me to check if I was alone. However the dark of the night wrapped around the trees and the surrounding area making it almost impossible to see anything. I crept up to the headstone watching my footing for twisted tree roots holding his flowers out in front of me. I laid them down on the ground and made a mental note to bring a torch next time I visited. The darkness had fallen and I embraced it with open arms. Suddenly I heard several twigs snap behind me. I clumsily spun round to catch a glimpse of what it could have been, trying not to fall, and that was the moment I first laid eyes on him. The figure was standing no more than fifteen feet away from me. Too close. He was about six feet tall and wearing all black, except from his white hat. He looked about forty but it was…

At that time, Jack felt that, “There’s persons everywhere not friends of mine”(198). These words in his mind reveal the alienated feeling in him. Ma, detailed her bitter experiences with Old Nick. Then, they were sent to Cumberland Clinic for the normal recovery. While peeping through the window, he could see more cars, buildings and people walking in the road. He puzzled whether they are real. It was a hard task of the mother to make him believe that everything is real in this earth. Jack confessed that “I try and believe it but it’s hard work.”(219) Jack experienced the nature for the first time when he walked on the grass with Ma. He saw hundreds of flowers not in bunch which he received with the mail, but in nature. “I’m squishing the green spikes under my shoes. I bend down and rub, it doesn’t cut my fingers. I watch the grass again, there’s a twig and a leaf that’s brown and a something, it’s yellow”(263). It was the first time when Jack immersed with…

They had been playing with him all afternoon, burying him in the sand and digging him up again, when someone chanced to see them and spread the alarm in the village. The men who carried him to the nearest house noticed that he weighed more than any dead man they had ever known, almost as much as a horse, and they said to each other that maybe he'd been floating too long and the water had got into his bones. When they laid him on the floor they said he'd been taller than all other men because there was barely enough room for him in the house, but they thought that maybe the ability to keep on growing after death was part of the nature of certain drowned men. He had the smell of the sea about him and only his shape gave one to suppose that it was the corpse of a human being, because the skin was covered with a crust of mud and scales.…
