I looked out the window of our car and across the 15 acre pasture and back to the old creaky barn where we kept our horses. The sun was shining on the windows of the barn, reflecting our large yard and garden. We pulled up and Cherry, my red roan Quarter Horse mare, raised her head up out of the long grass. Still chomping on the grass she had in her mouth, she nickered and came cantering up to the barn. JoBey and Billy, my sister’s and my mom’s horses, were in their own pasture and came running in behind Cherry. “Where do you want to ride today?” my mom asked, as we got out of the car and went into the barn. “I was thinking we could ride down to the far end of the pasture,“ I said, grabbing a halter as I opened her door and put it on her. Tying her to a post in her stall, I gave her a kiss on the nose. …show more content…
As I turned around, my mom was getting Billy’s saddle and bridle of the rack and was carrying it over to his stall, which was right next to Cherry’s. Fortunately it was a foggy morning, and within half an hour the two were out of sight of camp and herd. As Pink had outlined the plans, everything was understood. We were encamped on a nice stream, and instead of trailing along with the herd, lay over for that day. Night came and our hunters failed to return, and the next morning we trailed forward towards the Arkansas River. Just as we went into camp at noon, two horsemen loomed up in sight coming down the trail from above. Every rascal of us knew who they were, and when the two rode up, Pink grew very angry and demanded to know why we had failed to reach the river the day…

The narrative, The Driver’s Seat struck home for me because I just received my driver’s license this past May, 2015. I took time for me to actually drive and to become comfortable behind the wheel of a car. This piece of writing spoke to me and allowed me to review some of the identical thinking points that I went through while getting to the point of taking control of my dad’s car. The story effectively walked me through the trials of spirit and mental anguish that preceded me in taking hold of the vehicle with my dad as the co-pilot giving directions. This was the exact thing the driving instructor in The Driver’s Seat‘ taught the author. The routine of how to maneuver and throw caution to the wind- taking risks- to get the author over…

Most people do not understand what it is like to get ridiculed for something that you love. When someone works hard to fit in with a certain crowd, but not accepted because they are not as good as others it can have a negative or positive impact. If someone were to take the criticism negatively, it may cause them to give up and no longer try. On the other hand, positive impacts may encourage someone to work hard to become exceptional. Working hard to become better at something is not easy, but the benefits can be tremendous. I personally have encountered this struggle.…

“I want that pony!” The annoying whiney voice of Little Miss Shirley Temple said. It wasn’t actually Shirley Temple but this girl had blonde curls that bounced with every step she took and she wore frilly dresses to schools everyday, she thought she was the queen and all of the rest of the class was mere peasants. After so long of knowing how annoying Little Miss Shirley Temple was, and learning that none of the boys in the class gave her one glance whereas all the girls would bow down to her every need, I realized that being like other little girls wasn’t what my intentions. That week my annoying dresses got ditched and put on clothes that were supposed to be worn while riding 4-wheelers, yes that included the boots and sometimes my helmet.…

My teacher clipped the lunge line onto the bridle. I kick him into a walk and ask “Can I trot please?” She nods and I make a kissing noise to Dakota and say trot. He kicks into a faster pace and suddenly I’m laughing and having the best time in the world. This is the first time I have ever experienced trotting a horse all by myself. I go with the rhythm of the horse’s feet and post up and down in the saddle. After a while I stop Dakota and slid off the left side of him and give him a huge hug around his neck. I can feel him breathing really hard on my neck and I giggle. I grab the reins and lead him out of the arena and to the barn where I un-tack him. Putting the tack away was extremely difficult for me because I wasn’t strong at all. But as I grew older I became stronger. After everything was put away and cleaned, I grabbed a carrot and headed back to Dakota I lay my hand flat and feel his lips slide across my hand to grab…
