Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Math Class
Starting out in 6th grade I was not a big fan of math. I actually thought that I wasn’t very good at math and I didn’t try all that hard in it. Once my teacher actually started to teach us in my math class I still thought it was very hard. My teacher gave lots of notes and I didn’t take them copiously. I didn’t really take my notes because I thought it wouldn't be important for me to learn. After my teacher showed the notes, she handed out class work and I didn’t know how to do it. I got help from my friend but I didn’t learn because they did all the work for me. Then my teacher sent me home with homework one night and I tried to do it without the help of my friend and I tried my hardest but when we got to school and reviewed the homework I didn’t do very good on it. After a few weeks I took my first …show more content…
When I looked at it I noticed my math grade first and I was barely passing and I was happy about that. I brought the report card home to my mom and she wasn’t as happy as I was about it. She sat me down and talked with me about my math grade. The things that she talked to me about changed my entire attitude about math and school in general for the second semester. I walked into the school after the break with a smile on my face waiting for my math class. When I got to the class I actually payed attention and took thorough notes and I got my friend’s notes from the last semester to copy them. When my teacher had finished giving notes she of course gave out class work like she normally did and I actually finished it with ease and got a grade of one hundred on it. I was very happy with this and it encouraged me to go home and study every night so I could do good on tests as well. After about a week I took a test over what I had been learning and I did very good on it and it made me feel so good about myself. As a few more months of school passed by, my math standardized test came

My personal learning style is doing. I learn best from the hands on approach of getting in to a topic or job and attempting to complete it on my own. This allows me to see my mistakes and not have them be prevented before they happen, which allows me to note the problem and fix it. I find it much harder to learn using concrete experience and reflective observation. The fact that both these styles are much harder for me to learn from effects my overall learning style because of how I learn, just watching someone else complete a task is not enough for me to learn by.…

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

My eleventh grade year was arduous. Not only was I concerned about passing five Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GGT), but math III was complex. math III was full of foreign concepts and equations. Overtime, I grew excited about learning new concepts in math III. My teacher was a great influence upon me. He regularly encouraged me to work hard. With his support and endless determination I was committed to succeeding. A few weeks went by and class was going great. We were learning how to plot linear functions, factor polynomials, and how to find missing sides on a right triangle. I was very consistent with studying and reviewing past assignments. I knew if I did not study I would not pass the tests. As the end of the semester grew near, I grew concerned about the final exam partly because I had forgotten a few of the earlier lessons in the class.…

My APUSH class was perhaps my favorite class my junior year despite it having been so rigorous and time demanding. I really enjoyed the material and although it was a large amount of work that was required, I still never found myself not finishing everything. It is for that reason that I really value this notebook. I did not fail to miss a single day of doing homework in the class and really managed to fit a whole year's worth of vocabulary in one single notebook. I think that to me it really represents the time and work that I put into getting everything done as a mean of getting myself prepared for the AP exam. I would always just sit with my friends, trying to complete the homework, it gave most of us something in common to complain about…

It was a bright sunny Wednesday afternoon and I was walking towards my car. I got out of class early and was heading home to get myself ready to spend time with my bright and intelligent students. Sometimes when I get out of class my body feels overwhelmed and tired. Perhaps it feels this way because of all the things that are going on in my life like family, friendship, relationship, community service, and homework assignments. I feel like I am very busy that I often do not have time for myself. However when I arrived to El Jardin that quickly changes. The students that I work with on Wednesday fill my life with positive attitude and energy that I often forget about the worries and stress that I encounter during the day. I really love my Wednesday shift more than my Tuesday shift because I have a stronger connection and attachment towards the two girls that I work with. On Wednesday’s, I work with two bright and intelligent 6th grade girls named Arisa and Janet. Both of them have special qualities and a sweet kind heart.…

A person who made an enormous impact on my life was my eighth grade math teacher. I'd had failed my seventh grade TAKS test and had to take a second math class for the year. I was extremely furious and disappointed that I had to take yet another math. I was and still am terrible at math, which just made the situation even worse. Within the first week, I kept failing my assignments, which was making my grade plummet. I came to my regular math teacher for help for my assignments to raise my grades. However, the way the teacher was explaining the math made absolutely no sense to me in any way. Fortunately, when I came to my TAKS math teacher for tutoring, the way he explained to me actually made things much more simpler in my work. Things started…

One thing that I think that sets me apart from other candidates applying to the University of California is that I put my heart and soul on every assignment, projects and exam. I work hard and put time on the assignment, projects and exam. I also give my full effort. Whenever I give my heart and soul on the assignment or projects, I am able to learn more than I should learn. I was able to discover new facts that I did not know. For example, in my Pre Calculus class, we did a project about global warming. I have to research about global warming and predict total population, average temperature, carbon dioxide emission in the next 50 and 100 years from now. I took my time and read articles about global warming. While looking at the statistic, I was asking myself what is cause of increasing population, temperature, and carbon dioxide emission. I realize those three factors are causing global warming. I made sure that I did the math correctly. I also made sure that I explained the definition, cause, and effect of the global warming. I gave my heart and soul by giving my best effort and making sure my data and information…

Me being the impatient but helpful person I am I said “yeah sure”. So I moved this little box that any kid in my class could have easily moved outside of her moving it herself. She stopped what she was doing at her cabinet and she showed me my final exam grade and it said 89% B+. A surprised me began smiling excited that I would pass the class with almost a B average for the year. She looked at me and said “T, you are smart. You have given me 40% effort and still somehow you still have managed to pass my class, I struggle dealing with students who are incapable but try hard every single day and you don't show me any effort and still manage to do have a decent grade…” “Why are you afraid? You are easily one of the most gifted students I have encountered and you show no effort?”. I just sat there lost and confused and wondered how she knew and wonder why I had wasted all this time not living up to my full potential, I had let my fear of failure keep me from being the best student I could be. I now look at it and regret the decisions I made in the past. Everyday i have learned to allow myself have higher expectations than I have before. There was a lesson in what my teacher said to me and I will…

Math has always been difficult for me. I have struggled with how to figure out problems and how I can do my best in math class. I was really worried about my grade in math because I wanted to succeed in all my classes in order to get accepted to my first college choice. I started figuring out the math problems in my head and practicing them at home.I used my calculator and computer to help me to solve my math problems. I soon found out that Math wasn't as difficult as I thought it was because I had learned the steps to solve the equations. No matter how difficult the problems were, I always persevered through them. That is how I learned that no matter how hard something is, with practice and repetition you can achieve your best potential.…

I once had a crazy college professor who made us write a paper and put music to it. I wrote about how my wife was like my new kitchen trash can and played chords on my piano to enhance the words I spoke. My teacher liked it. I liked doing it. And, I think my wife still likes me after doing it too. The assignment, in both the way it was given and how I went about doing it, reflects two ways that embody my personal educational philosophy.…

I thought if my math teacher could not teach me, who could? I did not want to go school, I was terrified of my teacher. Not only was she my math teacher, but Mrs.Taylor was also my english teacher. I have always wanted to go to school, but this teacher just made learning miserable. When it was getting a little more into the school year and my personality was coming out Mrs.Taylor just got more demanding. She wanted me to do extra work so I can practise. In my mind I thought ‘ how can I practise when I do not even know what I am supposed to do?’ I just even more discouraged. I always did my homework; too scared of getting yelled at for not even trying. Mrs. Taylor thought I was just lazy when I would skip numbers, but in reality I just didn’t know how to do them. You may be thinking “Why did you not speak up and defend yourself?” When I was 10 years old I was shy, quiet and a reserved person. I didn’t want to speak up if that lead to having attention being thrown at…

The proudest moment in my high school career is when I signed myself to take my first AP class. I was really nervous about going to the meeting to sign myself up to get the summer assignment because I felt that I was not ready for the work load, and I would not be able to pass the class. My excuse for not going to the meeting was that I was helping in the cafeteria and I was going to be really late, but when I told my two best friends Jenny and Virginia that I wasn't going to take it anymore. They got so frustrated and annoyed with me because they said I was stupid if I didn’t take AP calculus because that was my favorite subject and I needed a challenge in that class. They also made me remember when I would tell them that Math Analysis was…

I was the kind of guy who always strove in order to get the highest grades but yet hadn’t decided what to do in the future. I wasn’t worried, I knew someday I would find something in what I was good at. I got to live with that thought for some time until I got to attend middle school, where I stopped worrying about my grades and managed only to pass the subjects. I spent most of my time sleeping due to the frustration of not knowing what to do in the future. Most of my middle school experience was tasteless. I hadn’t friends at all, and teachers used to discourage their students about their future. “You're not going to college, you’ll not be able to do it because you’re poor” used to say, Mrs. Vazquez, the math teacher who instead of giving her class, talked on how much his son had accomplished in college and how we would not be able to attend. That was about to change.…

I headed to my first class which just so happened to be my favorite subject, English. The hallways were very wide but when filled with students I felt like I had to shove my way through just to get to my locker. The lockers were a mixture between Gray and purple. The school colors were supposed to be purple and silver but there was no way that these lockers could be considered. I took a look at the little piece of paper that the lady in the office had given me and tried out the combination on my locker. It took me about five minutes to open it and after struggling for that long I was a little irritated so when it did open, it flew open and slammed into the locker next to mine. I held my breath and hoped that nobody had noticed. I took a long deep breath and slowly opened my eyes again. Luckily I was still standing alone and nobody around was looking at me. I put my extra books and notebooks into the locker and and closed it as quietly as I could.…
