Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Writing Process
Throughout the years I have dreaded writing because I lacked the skills necessary to be an efficient writer. I would spend so much time stressing over all the skills I didn’t know that I never had the time to enjoy the writing process. By taking this course, I have learned valuable and essential skills to make the writing process more enjoyable. Furthermore, over the course of this semester I have flourished into a more confident and focused writer. A major factor that has contributed to this shift in my writing abilities is the process by which I write my papers. Before taking this course, I never saw the importance of prewriting, and I truthfully thought of it as a waste of time. However, I now consider it to be absolutely essential to my writing process. Through brainstorming, list making, and outlining I have learned to organize my thoughts into a structure that makes sense for the topics I write about. Not only does it help me to focus my ideas around a central topic, it also helps me to have better time management when writing papers. Before I started prewriting, I would wait until the last minute to write my entire paper. Prewriting helps me to take it a little bit at a time, …show more content…
My writing is easier to understand and more effective for communication because I have learned valuable grammar and punctuation rules. I always thought that if I didn’t understand grammar rules by now, there would be no chance for me to ever understand them, but this semester proved me wrong. Now, I enjoy learning about these rules, so they stick better in my mind. I’ve learned that it is the seemingly miniscule aspects that can help or hinder me when writing. For example, placing a comma in the wrong place can alter the entire meaning of a sentence. It’s crucial for me that my grammar and punctuation make sense and do not distort the meanings of my

After reading the article “The Composing Processes of Unskilled College Writers” by Sondra Perl I have been forced to understand how writers write. The writing process is a situation that is approached from various angles. In the writing process techniques and sequences from person to person are often diverse, but it is one of the ways one may be expressed. The goal of Perl study was to “see how unskilled writers write, can their writing process be analyzed in a systematic, replicable manner, and what does an increased understanding of their process suggest about nature of composing in general and the manner in which writing is taught in schools.” (191) With Perl performing this observation and collecting several amounts of data I decided to perform an observation on my writing by paying close attention to how I write. With analyzing I realized that my writing process have a very sequential pattern. I also have noticed that many acts of critical planning and editing are carried out through many of my writings and it has had a negative effect on the majority of my writing masterpieces. Subsequent to carefully critiquing my writing I have realized that all individuals have a different way they write.…

Well, I can now say after reading last week's article by Hass and Flower and this weeks Penrose and Geisler's which was about how important rhetorical reading is and can help understand what you are reading, has opened my eyes to that fact that these are only part of why I have trouble with writing. As I reflect on past writing assignments, I now see it could have been due to my lack of experiences within certain rhetorical situations. Now that I have advanced my education and have gained additional experience on how to approach writing differently, my style of writing seems to flow better, and has become less intimidating. Which has lead to fewer sentence fragments; consistent grammar and being less critical, this has helped me, become a more knowledgeable writer. I can now say I am more like Roger and less like Janet because I now can connect the texts I am reading with real world events or things that have happened within my own life. Ultimately, I have now found that being a more experienced student has helped me improve how to read between the lines and not read just to paraphrase, it has also helped me write a better structured, more comprehensive, and well-organized essay using better examples. The important part of these readings…

My biggest accomplishment in this class is improvement in writing, and I plan to focus on editing on grammar for the remaining weeks. In the past few weeks, I learned how to write papers faster and more effectively. Previously, I was a slow and weak writer. I took more than two hours to write a page, which meant I took over four hours to finish a full paper. Thus, it was stressful when I took diagnostics and midterm. Although I took a long time to write, I still did not write a strong paper. The reason is that I did not brainstorm before I started writing. Now, I write paper faster because I write down everything that I want to talk about first, without caring about grammar. I wrote down all the evidences and quotes, and then I organize them…

I have always had struggles and difficulties when it comes to writing. This is due to the fact that English is not my first language, and that I am still learning. I started to learn how to speak, and listen, and mainly write in English when I was in ninth grade. Writing has been the hardest to deal with it, because I have many spelling and mechanical errors and most importantly, how to organize an essay, but this changed when I took English 49 with Professor Lucero. In my first day of class, I was assigned to write an essay about my experience with writing. I was not completely sure on how to start my essay and how to organize it. When I was in High School, I did not write many essays, and the few I did, I have endless help. So, I just my…

I began writing stories when I was young. By the time fourth grade rolled around I had tried writing books but never finished them. Every writing project I started I put in a memory box and stored away. My teacher read interesting books to my class. She would take two weeks to read a 500 page book. I enjoyed cuddling up next to watch each expression she expressed. Every couple of months my teacher set up blanket forts and let us read independently all day long. We’d read beside the light of a lamp and bring our own pillows to lay on. This was my favorite time of the year. From there, she let us write stories and read them aloud. My teacher helped develop my love for writing.…

I guess you can say that my experience as a writer over the years has got better, and the reason why I say that is because I only remember writing 3 things. One was in my history class about either World War 2 or about the Slave Trade. At first it took me a few mins but I guess you can say that I was having trouble on how to put my words and information down on paper. I had to do some re-search on writing essays or papers, that way I could get the idea of how mine would look or turn out.…

My writing process is usually all over the place, I have to be in my room with my door shut, my music on, my fan on, and my television on, weird, I know, but that is what I have to do in order to keep myself concentrated. After I am all situated I begin by writing down different ideas on a couple sheets of paper, listing ways I could support this idea and how it relates to my topic, sometimes when I am stuck I look up sample essays online to help me out of my rut. Once I finally choose an idea I start writing the first things that pop into my head down on another sheet of paper, it usually ends up being a jumbled mess that only I can understand. After all of my ideas are laid out onto the paper I begin placing numbers beside them so I know…

Beginning at the end of 9th grade to the middle of 11th I could not stop writing. Everything from conversations at the dinner table to dreams in the middle of the night inspired me. At the start of the second semester of 11th grade, however, I started writing less and hated everything that came on the page. As an attempt to inspire myself I read through 600 conversations, stories, and story ideas I had written from that period. Amazed by the beautiful sentences I had written, but I tried to understand what had happened within those few months. I realized that that period in my life was before the stress of college applications when my life was just me, my courses, and my writing. For the sake of my writing, I knew I needed to attend a school…

Through Advanced Composition my writing skills have grown immensely. I have become a more vibrant and expressive writer while still being aware of the subtle nuances of grammar and mechanics. I learned how to view writing as a process, rather than just a goal. I wrote a personal memoir about a game of chess I once played with a friend(Benchmark #1). In this paper, I learned how the value of outlining, and listing as part of the writing process. I had to approach a mediocre story with a fresh new perspective.…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…
