Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Writing Process
Throughout the years I have dreaded writing because I lacked the skills necessary to be an efficient writer. I would spend so much time stressing over all the skills I didn’t know that I never had the time to enjoy the writing process. By taking this course, I have learned valuable and essential skills to make the writing process more enjoyable. Furthermore, over the course of this semester I have flourished into a more confident and focused writer. A major factor that has contributed to this shift in my writing abilities is the process by which I write my papers. Before taking this course, I never saw the importance of prewriting, and I truthfully thought of it as a waste of time. However, I now consider it to be absolutely essential to my writing process. Through brainstorming, list making, and outlining I have learned to organize my thoughts into a structure that makes sense for the topics I write about. Not only does it help me to focus my ideas around a central topic, it also helps me to have better time management when writing papers. Before I started prewriting, I would wait until the last minute to write my entire paper. Prewriting helps me to take it a little bit at a time, …show more content…
My writing is easier to understand and more effective for communication because I have learned valuable grammar and punctuation rules. I always thought that if I didn’t understand grammar rules by now, there would be no chance for me to ever understand them, but this semester proved me wrong. Now, I enjoy learning about these rules, so they stick better in my mind. I’ve learned that it is the seemingly miniscule aspects that can help or hinder me when writing. For example, placing a comma in the wrong place can alter the entire meaning of a sentence. It’s crucial for me that my grammar and punctuation make sense and do not distort the meanings of my

Well, I can now say after reading last week's article by Hass and Flower and this weeks Penrose and Geisler's which was about how important rhetorical reading is and can help understand what you are reading, has opened my eyes to that fact that these are only part of why I have trouble with writing. As I reflect on past writing assignments, I now see it could have been due to my lack of experiences within certain rhetorical situations. Now that I have advanced my education and have gained additional experience on how to approach writing differently, my style of writing seems to flow better, and has become less intimidating. Which has lead to fewer sentence fragments; consistent grammar and being less critical, this has helped me, become a more knowledgeable writer. I can now say I am more like Roger and less like Janet because I now can connect the texts I am reading with real world events or things that have happened within my own life. Ultimately, I have now found that being a more experienced student has helped me improve how to read between the lines and not read just to paraphrase, it has also helped me write a better structured, more comprehensive, and well-organized essay using better examples. The important part of these readings…

My writing process is usually all over the place, I have to be in my room with my door shut, my music on, my fan on, and my television on, weird, I know, but that is what I have to do in order to keep myself concentrated. After I am all situated I begin by writing down different ideas on a couple sheets of paper, listing ways I could support this idea and how it relates to my topic, sometimes when I am stuck I look up sample essays online to help me out of my rut. Once I finally choose an idea I start writing the first things that pop into my head down on another sheet of paper, it usually ends up being a jumbled mess that only I can understand. After all of my ideas are laid out onto the paper I begin placing numbers beside them so I know…

In all seriousness, my writing is garbage, but it some what improved the slightest bit because I had a professor who actually knows how to teach a English class and not give little hints on telling us if our paper was trash. Instead, we were told straight if it was a good paper or not and it has probably helped me improve the most. In High School, I was always told that my papers were “good,” thankfully I finally had a Professor who can give it to me straight and tell us how we can improve our writing. On all the RRs, RWL, and formal essays that I have written these past twelve weeks, I have gotten educational criticism that has helped my pathetic writing become less pathetic and somewhat college worthy writing.…

In the past a thousand weeks, I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the quarter ends, I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived my fifth quarter but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

New insights I have developed about the genre include being able to communicate effectively without appearing to repeat yourself and knowing that there is a major difference between speaking to small groups, large groups, and writing a paper in general. Personal functions that this serves is gaining a deeper insight to my own views, while public functions can be addressing larger issues to a major group.…

Prior to taking this class my writing pretty much consisted of placing my thoughts down in a more drawn out and incomplete picture of what I initially was trying to convey to the readers, not really paying a lot of attention to the proper placement of verbs, pronouns, irregular verbs as well as narrowing the topic in which I was writing about.…

The improvements that I see in my writing are many. I now find myself always trying to use proper punctuation, wording, and sentencing. Even if I am messaging my co-workers or friends, I find myself always making sure the punctuation and capitalization are where they need to be and that my sentences make sense. I know I have not yet fully mastered the skill of grammar, but if I continue to use it on a daily basis, I am sure I will understand it more, therefore I will get much better at it.…

After receiving an assignment from my metaphysical poets English class I immediately paced to the learning center, skipping lunch, to start the long, but now invigorating process of writing. I pressed the slightly ajar-door open and stepped into her rectangle office. My black backpack met the carpet with a thump and I tossed the assignment sheet on the wooden cherry-maple table—the ideas were squirreling in my head like a whirlpool and I needed to get them out. Knowingly, my teacher smiled and handed me a black dry eraser marker as we silently stepped over to the seemingly unending blank white board. She knew what was coming and neither her nor I were going to have time to eat lunch.…

The experience that I went through in this mini-mester course was challenging, yet intriguing. I was able to gain new techniques of how to professionally write an essay with an outline. An outline is a sheet of paper for you to write down your ideas. It is an easier way for me to plan for my essay, but the way how my mind jumps to many conclusions all at once is commonly frustrating. Normally, I would grab a random piece of paper and start writing my essay without doing an outline first. While I am writing my essay, my thoughts starts to collide with all of my ideas that I had planned on using first. Due to my thoughts colliding all at once, I am not able to focus and fluently write an essay without managing my time to get the essay done. The…

My biggest accomplishment in this class is improvement in writing, and I plan to focus on editing on grammar for the remaining weeks. In the past few weeks, I learned how to write papers faster and more effectively. Previously, I was a slow and weak writer. I took more than two hours to write a page, which meant I took over four hours to finish a full paper. Thus, it was stressful when I took diagnostics and midterm. Although I took a long time to write, I still did not write a strong paper. The reason is that I did not brainstorm before I started writing. Now, I write paper faster because I write down everything that I want to talk about first, without caring about grammar. I wrote down all the evidences and quotes, and then I organize them…

I guess you can say that my experience as a writer over the years has got better, and the reason why I say that is because I only remember writing 3 things. One was in my history class about either World War 2 or about the Slave Trade. At first it took me a few mins but I guess you can say that I was having trouble on how to put my words and information down on paper. I had to do some re-search on writing essays or papers, that way I could get the idea of how mine would look or turn out.…

Beginning at the end of 9th grade to the middle of 11th I could not stop writing. Everything from conversations at the dinner table to dreams in the middle of the night inspired me. At the start of the second semester of 11th grade, however, I started writing less and hated everything that came on the page. As an attempt to inspire myself I read through 600 conversations, stories, and story ideas I had written from that period. Amazed by the beautiful sentences I had written, but I tried to understand what had happened within those few months. I realized that that period in my life was before the stress of college applications when my life was just me, my courses, and my writing. For the sake of my writing, I knew I needed to attend a school…
