Personal Narrative: What I Believe
Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "Do what you feel in your heart to be right - for you'll be criticized anyway." You have one shot at life and doing what others believe is best for you is not the way to live. My dad may not be as sophisticated as Eleanor Roosevelt, but they have similar ideas of how you should do what you believe is right no matter what others think. My father once told me, "It's your life, live it the way you want to live it and do not let anyone stand in the way of your dreams; always remember to stand up for what you believe in." It wasn't until recently that I started to truly understand what my father told me. My entire life I have been terrible at decision making, and I relied on others to assist in what they believed was for my best interest. Whether it be what …show more content…
For example, I am a Christian, and I have had to fight past some pretty big temptations in high school. I have faith in something that is bigger than any of us, and I knew if I did what He wanted, It would all work out. I am not saying I am a perfect person because I am far from it and everyone comes with their mistakes. Furthermore, I knew being a Christian would have it's difficulties but I knew to stand up for what you believe in, was worth the undertaking. To truly follow my dreams in life I know that means doing what I feel is right no matter the judgment. There are times where I have had to miss out on activities going on because I knew it was wrong, or I have been judged because of my opinions on a topic. In addition, having strong opinions on feminism and more controversial topics in the South have caused many arguments amongst many of my classmates and peers. However, I learned to always stand up for what you believe in and do what you feel in your heart to be right. To be able to follow your dreams you have to go out on a limb and work for it even if others do not agree with your

Although cliché, if a friend told me to jump off a cliff, I sure as hell would not do it. I know myself and my body better than anybody. I know that I get hurt easily and I a clumsy, so that might not be the best decision. Fact: those rocks in the water are dangerous. Fact: death is a large risk if I jump off that cliff. In this case, it is so important that I think for myself. If jumping off the cliff is what “cool” people are doing, I would be okay with not conforming to the cool people. Having a steady head on your shoulders and being independent in your thoughts is a powerful thing. This is imperative because sometimes people do not look out for others’ best interests, so be aware and be…

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

I grew up in a very conservative, restricted family household. I still remember the many times I thought to myself why my siblings and I couldn’t go to another place other than church. Or why the many kids in my neighborhood where allowed, of what it seemed at that time, the million opportunities to enjoy their childhood. From a young age I was to obey and do what I was told. To not deviate from my parents’ wishes, which were for me to be good Christian and someone who always did well by school and society. As a got older I realized that our…

Being true to yourself is the most important thing that can happen in your life. Thoreau said “Still we live meanly, like ants; though the fable tells us that we were long ago changed into men; like pygmies we fight with cranes; it is error upon error, and clout upon clout, and our best virtue has for its occasion a superfluous and evitable wretchedness.” This quote is saying you can do whatever you want but ask yourself is that really gonna make you happy because if not you just be living nothing more. Emerson said “A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace.” He is trying to say that you can be doing something you like and it would mean nothing to you but if you do what you love you might feel rewarded with what you have done. In my words these quotes mean that if your not happy with what you're doing then why are you doing it. My Grandpa exemplifies being true to yourself by making me think about life decisions because he’s been through so much and can probably relate to that decision.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

After retaking the LASSI I have noticed a considerable amount of improvement as well as regression. In the beginning of the year, I vowed to myself that I would become a better student. I wanted to maximize all of my abilities in order to be successful. So, after I took my first LASSI and had my talk with Mac, I began to implement new strategies meant to help me accomplish my goal. First I had to deal with my anxiety. In past years I suffered with a lot of anxiety while learning math. I used to love math very much, however, this changed after my 6th grade year. Math became a foreign subject to me. I could no longer make connections and solve problems. As a result, my grades in math began to drop. As a person who is used to getting A’s and B’s on assignments, I had a difficult time in coping with my failure since it didn’t live up to my standards in the subject of math. My difficulty with math eventually caused me to have anxiety. I had carried this anxiety until my sophomore year in high school. It seemed as if no matter how hard I tried to concentrate on math tests my mind would always become blank. Luckily I had an…

My own personal beliefs and values weigh heavily into my opinion on this subject. I believe that ever person truly is created equal, despite their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality. The citizens of other countries should be given the same rights as every american citizen. Healthcare, education, and the right to lead a dignified life are rights that should be universally gangrened to every person who enters our borders. In the experiences of Antonio Alvarez, a young Mexican american who moved here illegally with his parents at the age of four, he was made to live a life practically in the shadows. When talking about how his life is effected by his illegal status Antonio said he experiences "... strong feelings of detachment…

Of all the valuable lessons my parents have taught me while growing up the most important one had to be that being different is ok because that just means that you are happy with who you are. Of course, like most children I ignored most of my parent’s life lessons by rebelling against them and attempted to change who I was in order to be accepted to a certain group, usually in school. I can’t say this was one of my brightest ideas growing up, but I learned from that mistake and I now understand that my school years would have been a lot better if I rebelled against the social norms of society and had confidence in just being myself. I can remember trying to fit in with the popular crowd in seventh grade but, The problem was that I was…

When I have a difficult moral decision to make I ususally think about my opinions, which one is better and of course the right decision. But sometimes im not able to make this moral decision on my own or having the need not to ask someone what their opinion is on it, so I usually go to my mom and ask her on what she thinks about it and what she would do. In my experience I feel when I make my own decision and not asking for someone others advice or opinion it kinda backfires on me sometimes, rather when I get my moms help on what I should do, it goes a lot smoother to where if I wouldn’t have asked her and just made my own choice without thinking about the other choices that I could have made…
