Personal Narrative: Torrey Pines
As the fog lifts and the sun begins to rise over Torrey Pines golf course cliffside, I can’t stop myself from staring into the vast Pacific Ocean that forms the perfect early morning backdrop. The salty ocean breeze briskly flashes across my face as I approach my shot from the tee box of the third hole. A dramatically set two-hundred-yard downhill par three, encased by ocean cliffs, safeguarded by a colony of trees to the right and an enormous sand trap that spans the entire front of the green. An intimidating setting for even the most seasoned golfer, or worse, an opportunity for the average golfer like myself to succumb to the pressure. Just like the person I’ve been paired with for the day, I’ve never played this course before. As I …show more content…
Open, that I’ve never played before? Pure luck some would say! I say mental preparation and visual training. I knew that my tee time was a few weeks away and instead of joyfully waiting for that day to come, I decided to play the Torrey Pines course on EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2014 video game every day until then. I probably played that hole over twenty times in that timeframe. You see, with the dramatic increase in technology, video games have morphed into digital replicas of real-world environments, creating modern virtual reality simulators. With features only previously dreamt about in golf folklore, like real-time course weather and lighting or topographical mapping of the putting green surface. I arrived on the day of my tee time knowing every detail about that course, every hole, every green. If playing the video game for only two weeks gave me that much of a competitive and mental advantage, imagine the possibilities for a professional athlete. This paper will show that even though nothing compensates for real-world experience, professional athletes should incorporate video games or virtual reality simulators into their training programs to gain a competitive

Going to Southern California, no one would think of packing an umbrella. Why would they? California is in the middle of a drought. When someone thinks of California, they think of baby blue skies and palm trees along the streets. But, of course, the weekend my family decided to visit Disneyland, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld is the weekend Southern California experienced what the local news called a “tropical depression.”…

It tasted like fishy beach. Texture-wise, it was firm, it wasn’t too bad, but it tasted like beach. A better way to explain is, when you pick up an old seashell at the beach, and you smell something inside it living. You might think it was a Hermit Crab or something, but it might have been a sushi. After I ate the first one, I couldn’t eat the second one; my parents looked at me as if I was crazy, but it was actually that terrible. When I slid the plate over to my father, he gave my mom and my sister the same exact look.…

On our trip to Cedar Glen, I learned numerous things that will benefit me in the future and assist me in making crucial decisions. One of the things I learned is group dynamics and working with other people. My group participated in various activities, such as logs and marshmallows, which taught us that we shouldn’t just focus on ourselves when completing a task, but also everybody in our group. In both logs and marshmallows, our group made sure each person reached the other side instead of just themselves, which the reason why we accomplished the activity is that we worked together as a team. I also learned that in a group, there could be people who lead a task, maintain a group, or focus on themselves. In low ropes and high ropes, we learned…

I live in a small city called South Lake Tahoe in the state of California. The people in South Lake consider themselves locals as long as you have lived here for more than 10 years. However, locals consider our city a town. Our town is mainly a tourist town, skiers and snowboarders in the winter and campers in the summer. When somebody moves to South Lake Tahoe, it may only be for a few reasons; to be a ski bum, get out of the bay area, or family. The people that move here either make it or they do not because of financial reasons. It is very hard to make a decent living here. To say it short and simple, a person can move up here with money or they learn to live paycheck by paycheck.…

The starry night sky filled with twinkling lights is absolutely breathtaking. I hear the flames crackle and hiss as I slowly rotate the marshmallow over the glowing embers to create the perfect golden brown color. Happy cheers from my loved ones gathered around the bonfire, fill the summer air. I can smell the Norway pine trees and taste the ooey-gooey 'smore as it melts on my taste buds. This is my happy place; the place I never want to leave. My cabin is my favorite place in this crazy world, and even though I have had the best times and the fondest memories here, it holds so much more than just great experiences.…

In 2008, I moved to an apartment in Rockaway Park located in Far Rockaway. I’ll admit, the neighborhood was far from attractive when I first arrived. The rumor mills stirred up a storm suggesting that Far Rockaway was well… “Rough around the edges” for a lack of a better term. Working on Riker’s Island, most of our patients who reside in Queens often came from Far Rockaway, thereby confirming the rumors that the town was riddled with crime, infested with drugs and plagued with anything one might consider rebellious or unscrupulous were true. And on my first day, I got lost and winded up surrounded by… you guessed it, The Projects. That was enough to dither anyone from any potential Real Estate or, in my case, rental agreement – regardless how appealing the offer could be. So why did I agree to move there in spite of the distasteful first impression? Before I can answer that, allow me to dive into the demographic details and…

The sound of the ocean is a form of relaxation but for me, I like to call it home. Ventura is a small county located in the southern part of the California and for the past twenty-two years it has been my sanctuary. The other two years of my life I spent in a smaller town called Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico. This was my birthplace and home to my parents until they made the decision of migrating directly to Ventura County. Within Irapuato City, there are small ranchos or ranches, located on the outskirts of town and at our rancho, we would raise pigs, goats, cows and, sheep. Surrounding our rancho there are acres of land, where we plant fruits and vegetables to consume and sell to our little community. Life in Mexico is much more rural than…

As Jack Nicklaus says, “Golf is a game of respect and sportsmanship; we have to respect its traditions and its rules.” Even though golf is not necessarily the first sport one thinks of when thinking of great acts of sportsmanship, it is a sport that has consistently displayed it throughout the game’s history. Above all, sportsmanship is a character trait that means more than winning or losing with grace on the field, it is about upholding standards when faced with…

With each passing breeze I remember the humidity, but continue to practice to distract myself from the outside world. After 45 minutes I decided to play a few holes. The sun is now beginning to fully go down over the horizon and a once bright yellow turned into a pink orange color. I realize I am going to have to run to finish at least 4 holes. The next 4 holes consist of attentive hits of the ball and carless running to my last shot. My thoughts consist of worrying about the sunlight and where my ball could possibly be. As I come closer to the end the once humid air has now turned into a consistent summer night breeze and the bugs specifically the cicadas have begun to create sympathy of noise around me. As I turn back to the clubhouse my worries from before have left me and now all I can think about is my hits and misses. I would much rather me graced with these worries then the ones of the outside world. Not looking at my phone for an hour and getting outside in the great fields of grass to me is the most therapeutic location in the world. Whenever I have major issues on my mind I will always have the golf course to help me forget my problems that truly don’t…

“Who would ever want to carry golf bags for four hours?” That was my first thought when I heard about caddying back in eighth grade. The job seemed boring, and I did not have much knowledge of golf. However, I wanted a job and figured why not get more information about caddying. In March, I called the local golf course in the town where I live and inquired about caddying for the summer. The caddie master told me to attend the caddy clinic in April. While waiting for the clinic to take place, I learned as much as I could about the game of golf. I learned which clubs were used for different distances. I learned golf etiquette and the specific rules for every varied situation. I learned what was expected of a good caddie, and the importance a…

He always said he wanted to go out with a bang, I didn’t realize that meant literally. I remember the sound of the gun piercing through the crisp night air then the thud that followed. I remember seeing his body lying still with that signature sly smile creeping from the corner of his mouth as if he had just told a joke. His eyes were closed, dark red blood pouring out his chest and mouth, staining his clothes, sinking into the sand of the beach around him. I remember the screaming ambulance taking his pale corpse away. I remember going back to the cabin up the road and getting out the Phrontistery, finding his note tucked away in the back cover. “Travel for me”, it said. “Goodbye, kid”, it said.…
