I want to start off by saying how excited I am to be joining A Place for Mom!! I started my career in health care nine years ago, originally working in nursing. I have worked in a variety of health care settings; Independent/Assisted Living, Memory Care, Long Term Care, Skilled Care, and the Hospital. I always knew I wanted to help people, seniors in particular. As a child I grew up living next door to my grandparents and did everything with them, this is where my love for seniors began. While working in the Hospital I came to the conclusion that nursing was not the way I was going to help people. I began working at an Assisted Living Community in Ames, Iowa as the Sales Director. I quickly learned that, that was how I was going to help people. For three years I got the pleasure of not only helping many families relieve their stress and fears for their loved ones care and safety, but I was also able to ensure their loved ones were able to live out their final years thriving. It was truly the most rewarding job, which brought me to A Place for Mom. At A Place for Mom I won't be limited to helping just the families that…
Here are some examples of my service to my community. During my 8th grade year in Elena Christian Jr. High School, both my classmates and I, we decided to do a beach cleanup. We chose the beach across from Water Gut. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to help out my community in a positive way. I volunteer and participate with the Junior Meteorology Club of Elena L. Christian Junior High School. I help with certain fundraisers such as; bake sales, car washes and collecting donations. I like to be there for people who are in need because it shows people that I am a caring and loving person. I also volunteered at the Agriculture Fair of 2010. I was helping out the Virgin Islands Police Department booth, assisting the police cadets, police officers, lieutenants and as well as the commissioner. Both my mom and I, we donated funds for Haiti at the VIPD in Frederiksted.…
Volunteering has driven me to becoming a better person. It has taught me essential life skills that will follow my footsteps for the rest of my life. I volunteer to give back to a community that has given me so much. The opportunities I have received throughout my life has given me motivation to be involved in my community. I am grateful for the help I received from others. I have always been challenged by members of my community to go above and beyond the expectations. Without the extra push, I would not be where I am today.…
I volunteer in my community whenever I get the opportunity. For example, I helped students get to school safely and I helped out around the school. I volunteered at the public library to help younger children. I now see it is hard work to get children focused and help them not make a big mess, but I enjoyed helping them in any way I can. Volunteering at the public library also taught me about patience. Not everything went exactly how I planned it out, but at the end it still worked out. My time at the library also taught me about effort.…
Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…
This is another quote that focuses on the amount of women all over the world who are forced to last (through bad times) whatever harm comes their way. Not only in Afghanistan, but in every country, and every neighbourhood. This is an on going issue in the world that has been around for centuries and is one that is often times 'swept under the rug.' To me, this issue should not be over looked at all, and I would certainly like to see and take part in educating (communities of people) on women's…
Volunteer Project I cut the grass for some of my family because they asked me to cut it for them. I did it for my Aunt Gwen and my Grandma Hill. I enjoy my time with my Aunt and I was working together with my brother and my cousin and we had a great time over at my Aunt’s house. And at my Grandma's house we had a great time over there. I got to see my baby cousin and I haven’t seen here in a long time. I would do this again anytime because it was fun and if they ask me to. I picked this to do because they asked me to do it for them. This experience made me realize that family matters and to never let them go. It changed me making me a better person and making myself more available to family’s need. This helped someone else and it help the community…
A “House Divided” It was June 14, 1858, and we were on our way to Mr.Lincoln’s house. My Dad happened to be one of Mr.Lincoln’s colleagues;therefore, he was always helping him compose his speeches. We weren’t too far from his house so we just took our horse and small wagon.…
Shouts and laughter echo throughout the kitchen as my grandparents recount stories of growing up in Mexico as young adults. Everyone’s eyes light up with animation as family members contribute to the conversation while eating homemade tamales and menudo. At each of my family holiday gatherings, the dinner goes beyond the consumption of a home cooked meal. These family gatherings are very important to me and have contributed to who I am today.…
This ranges from volunteering at open houses at the high school I attend, book sales, and Wic Centers. Volunteering at Wic Centers have been one of the places that I have been most involved in. During the summer, when I am not in any medical programs I usually volunteer there from 8:00 A. M up to 5:00 P.M. I help by reading and playing with children between ages 0-7 or helping distributes free lunches during the summer or helping clean the tables and chairs of the place where they eat during the summer. Overall, I have made more than 200 hours of community service learning hours over the last two summers and a total of more than 300 community service hours in the last three years of high school.…
Ahkeem Hendricks Professor Myers FCST 2/19/2013 Service Paper For my service I went to Atlanta with my mentor and some others and fed the homeless. My mentor prepared sandwiches, chips and water the night before. Saturday morning after he picked us up we went to the Quiktrip and met a homeless man that was on a journey to a shelter in Atlanta. He told us he had come from Houston all the way to Georgia. Meeting him and hearing about his life made me appreciate life and be thankful for my family. On the way to Atlanta he told us about how he was in the army and his family had abandoned him, the stories were so sad but very eye opening.…
Coinciding with the nuclear/gender home aspects in this weeks reading material, I was clearly able to discern my families placement among these topics. From a very young age I have always been hyper aware of gender roles, despite my family norm. In relation to the 'nuclear home' family I can conclusively say my family falls in line with the traditional norm. Growing up my father was the “bread winner.” Since he made enough money to support our family my mother didn't need to work, and so she was able focus on raising my sister and I. In accordance with money power, my parents seemed to work as a unit, for example they would each make ordinary purchases and when it came to larger purchases, they would discuss those together. When it came to…
The morning sun hits me through the windows and I force my eyes open only to see my beloved beside me. His pale face contains a pair of smiling eyes and saliva that’s coming out of the tip of his lips. I couldn't resist but to place a gentle kiss on him while removing the sticky water off of him. Soon I slowly pull myself up in a sitting position next to him. Trying not to wake him up, I turn my head to the panda holding the clock that is showing 7:38 in the morning. I massage my sore arms as I move quietly out of the room. The bright sun lightens the living room as I close the room door behind me. What a great start in the morning with the warm sun shining. I quickly washed my hands in the kitchen sink, which is right next to the living room. Then I…
I was the first of three boys born into in a single parent home. Life at home was pretty good until I was faced with a traumatic event, my father choked me. Because of this, I was introduced to counseling from the local Children Advocacy Center to help guide me and find a place that could resolve my problems. After many sessions my counselor suggested that I go to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch saying that it was a place that could help me get rid of my baggage and help me move forward in my situation.…
j j rsy jr s yjsyrjsy jsyjsryjsryj sryjyjsyjsy joryktgbnvweirugvmwhFinal Submission The volunteer hours I did really opened my eyes to public generosity and how organizations work. I volunteered for the Kidney Foundation of Canada only once but it was enough. I volunteered with a friend, which made sitting in Sobey’s all day a little more bearable. I sat at a table, dressed up with posters, numerous pamphlets, and magazines on kidney disease and health. I asked shoppers leaving Sobey’s if they’d like to donate to the Kidney Foundation. Some people would walk passed without so much as a glance, but many others stopped to hear what we were and what the organization did for people. Sometimes people stopped on their own, before we even had a chance to ask the question. It really made me see the generous side of Fonthill and it made me really happy to see that people wanted to be a part of a difference.…
