Personal Narrative: The Tulsa Day Center
Upon arriving at The Tulsa Day Center at 8 a.m. I was overwhelmed when I noticed that the line into the building had already surpassed the door and was almost to the parking lot. After weaving through the crowd of people attempting to get inside the building, I explained to the security officers that I was a volunteer and proceeded through the metal detector. The Officer then instructed me to sign in, and pointed me to the clothing room where I would report to Forrest. After a couple of seconds of trying to figure out where I was going I stumbled into the clothing room, and introduced myself to Forrest. He was excited to have some help. He took me over to 3 extra-large laundry baskets and asked me to fold all of the blankets and sheets while

When asked to write about a childhood experience most people think of the time they lost their first tooth when they were 6, or about the time they started school when they were 5, however, I’m going to write about summer. Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

I was a percussionist during my high school tenure. As a school musician during my freshman year, I was in the high school band at both Northwest Christian and Dayton Christian. I went to Northwest during the first two quarters of my freshman and the high school band only had one concert, Then, I switched over to Dayton Christian during the last two quarters of my freshman year. The Dayton Christian High School Band was much larger than Northwest’s and performed two concerts, one at the Dayton Christian Cafeteria, and one out at Cedarville University. During my sophomore year at Dayton Christian, I was part of the high school band and the pep band. I was a bass drummer during pep band season; we performed at a stadium in Monroe every home football…

A day in Memphis is not complete without the diversity in our community. As a second generation Memphian who has primarily lived in Midtown, I had the privilege of watching several different cultures in one place and especially now that I attended one of the largest public schools. Daily, I experience someone else’s world. The people I get to meet and see are from various backgrounds: race, religion, ethnicity, etc. that I may never comprehend, which is wonderful. In Memphis, it is normal to be an enigma, to have idiosyncrasies. I believe that is the heart of Memphis. What makes this heart surpass discrimination is the acceptance that follows years of diversity. My neighborhood has single mothers whose children play with the neighborhood adolescents.…

In my experience, I don’t think I am reluctant to a specific identity. Houston is a very diverse city that people can find almost any type of music genre. In my community there are Hispanic and African American families. The music that is heard is of all kinds from “R&B, Pop music, Reggae, to Cumbia, Bachata and Regional Mexicano.” I have lived in the same community ever since I was born and in my opinion, I have grown up listening to the different types of music genres. This has shaped my identity to be open to different music genres and traditions.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

Time is winding down and the past thirty nine weeks has been nothing short but amazing. It has been full of different emotions and feelings. From the stretching of the skin to the sudden movement I have never felt before. It was all a new experience, but the feeling was indescribable. After a restless night, the sunrise appeared before I knew it. The pain was unbearable, but after several hours and a couple of good pushes you were here. I was extremely exhausted, but the relief was absolutely amazing. At first sight I fell in love with you. Not for how you look, just for who you are. I never thought I could feel affection like this. What is this? Is this how it's assume to feel or even resemble? It's kind of insane how you, only one individual,…

I want to start off by saying how excited I am to be joining A Place for Mom!! I started my career in health care nine years ago, originally working in nursing. I have worked in a variety of health care settings; Independent/Assisted Living, Memory Care, Long Term Care, Skilled Care, and the Hospital. I always knew I wanted to help people, seniors in particular. As a child I grew up living next door to my grandparents and did everything with them, this is where my love for seniors began. While working in the Hospital I came to the conclusion that nursing was not the way I was going to help people. I began working at an Assisted Living Community in Ames, Iowa as the Sales Director. I quickly learned that, that was how I was going to help people. For three years I got the pleasure of not only helping many families relieve their stress and fears for their loved ones care and safety, but I was also able to ensure their loved ones were able to live out their final years thriving. It was truly the most rewarding job, which brought me to A Place for Mom. At A Place for Mom I won't be limited to helping just the families that…
