Personal Narrative: The Switch Changed My Life
One of my largest life decisions was making the switch. The switch changed my life in multiple ways. It introduced me to several important people in my life including friends and coaches. The switch also gave me numerous opportunities I would not have had otherwise. The switch was not easy to adjust to at the time, but I will never regret it. It has become a major decision in my life and now is a significant part of my memories. The switch occurred in eighth grade when I transitioned from basketball to volleyball. I have been playing basketball since I could walk. It has been such a major element in my life. I played in every league I could and whenever I could. From playing in summer and winter leagues to just shooting some hoops in the driveway …show more content…
I remember my middle school gym class teacher saying,” Today we are playing volleyball.” Hudson 2 I, never thinking I would play and love the sport, replied,” Ugh, not today.” Starting volleyball I was timid and nervous on the grounds that I was not the better of the players in the previous sport I participated in. My self¬confidence was not at its highest due to basketball. I will never forget my first year of volleyball in eighth grade. I started playing volleyball with a club season. It started with some nerve¬wracking open gyms and tryouts. The first team I played for did not have much competition, consequently establishing me as one of the most athletic players on the team during the first time being on a volleyball court. If you showed up to the open gyms and tryouts you made the team. At this time I had gained much self¬confidence and felt more comfortable playing volleyball than before. Then came along some tournaments and matches. As soon as I got to my first match I figured out that I did not have as much skill as some of the other players on the other teams. Thus knowing that our team is not exceedingly skilled, my confidence went down once …show more content…
Sweat was running down my side as the coach kept calling names. Before I knew it I heard,” Ozzy.” I walked into the hallway and coach says to me,” After lots of thought and spectating I decided that you will be on the varsity team.” A smile arose on my face as my nerves were no more. At this point I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I responded,” Thank you coach. I appreciate you taking me.” Hudson 4 I have been playing club and school volleyball ever since. Each year I play, I gain more and more self-confidence which allows me to mature. Volleyball molded me into the person I am today. I learned many skills and tips in volleyball as well as life itself from being part of a second place district champion team to being team captain two years in a row. The nervousness and tenderness of being that rookie freshman had faded. I am now the leader that I would not have thought I would have been. The sport taught me what it’s like to achieve something much greater than the original goals I set for myself. Volleyball will forever be a part of me. Making the switch turned my world around and brightened my

I signed up for volleyball. I have only had two practices. Hitherto, I acquired the skills of passing the ball, serve overhand, and set the ball. I failed to attend the first practice. As a result, I do not know how to properly serve underhand. Practice is every Friday night from six “o” clock to six forty-five at Anderson Farm Park. Moreover drills, we play games. One game I relish is where a person serves the ball to the other side of the net and tries to hit someone. If they are not successful, they have to sit were the ball landed. If they do strike someone, they earn a point. Volleyball is an enjoyable experience.…

In middle school and high school I played basketball and ran in track. I never played volleyball competitively, until my sophomore year of high school, but before then I played volleyball on the beach with my sister. Unfortunately, one day, the University of Houston's volleyball ball coach saw me playing and was beyond amazed. From that day forward, I was the first ever to get a female sports scholarship, full…

Playing sports has always been something that I enjoy to do, so I decided to play a new sport. And that was volleyball. As a new volleyball player I didn’t know the complete sport of volleyball and how it was played, therefore I began to do research on different successful volleyball players. That is when I came across Destinee Hooker and when I did it made me more desirable about the game and about how to make myself a better person. I instantly started to watch YouTube videos of her from when she was in college at Texas A&M and when she became a professional volleyball player overseas and for our own country. As I began to watch her, I started to follow her throughout the volleyball season. Furthermore I learned the basic steps to volleyball by watching her compete in the games she played. In more detail she was also participated in the London Olympic games for two thousand and twelve which really influenced me as an athlete. Even though the US team did not bring back gold for our country, Destinee as a player brought gold to my heart because she gave it her all in every…

As a freshman, I made the varsity volleyball team. With this position came a lot of responsibility and pressure. My teammates always looked at me as the “baby”, but they expected me to play at the same level as the seniors. I learned how to deal with difficult personalities and I learned how to commit myself to a team and a sport. I also learned that I was a role model to other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career.…

My middle school volleyball coach has been the most influential person in my life. In 6th grade I had never picked up a volleyball until the day of tryouts. Miraculously I made the team. Coach Brittany helped to build up my confidence and helped to greatly build up my skills. I made the team again in seventh grade. This year turned out to be a bit harder. I was suppose to play middle front, which I loved dearly, but I didn't understand the transitions off the net, so she got mad at me in front of everyone and switched my position. It was one of the most embarrassing and humbling experiences of my life. That year I learned to love a position that I originally hated and Coach Brittany said to me, " When you're not the best, if you work hard,…

As an athlete you can get to see the different types of attitudes and emotions other athletes have, good or bad. In high school I started playing sports which really got my competitive side out but it also came with emotions I didn’t know how to control at the time. My first time playing volleyball I started off by practicing and playing with the varsity team at school. When season came along I didn’t make the cut for varsity so I was put on the J.V. team with girls who didn’t know how to play that well. That’s when my emotions started to show because I wasn’t used to playing with a team where I was the only one that knew what we had to be doing. After that season was over the next two years I was on varsity and I was still not able to get ahold of my attitude and emotions. I was aware that this was a problem for the team and I and that I looked bad but I didn’t know how to control it so I let it be. My last season I had learned to control myself but it was very limited and it wasn’t enough. When I finally graduated my coach asked me if I would like to help him with the team, I agreed. I started going to their games and practices and noticed two of the girls had the same attitudes as I did and felt how frustrating it was to deal with them but I decided not to pay attention to them. It was at one of their games when it hit me and I realized that I used to look as bad as they did and I was really embarrassed of myself. At that point I made myself a promise that I would keep my emotions and attitude on check if I played in college I wanted a fresh start and I’ve kept my promise till this…

Volleyball and kids happen to be two of my favorite things, and I was fortunate enough to experience this past spring. I took on the role of coaching a 5th grade volleyball team. I volunteered to spend every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and occasional weekends with this crazy group of 5th grade girls. Safe to say I did not fully know what I was getting myself into, but I do not regret my decision to coach one bit. The first day of practice was crazy. The gym was full of smiling, screaming, dancing 5th grade girls. At that moment I thought how am I going to deal with this all season. Throughout the season the girls grew on me. I got to know more about them and all the 5th grade drama. The best part was getting to know their parents and having…

Volleyball was conceived by Williams J. Morgan of the Holyoke, Massachusetts YMCA in 1895 as a blend of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Early rules called for a net 6 feet 6 inches from the ground and for a 25-by 50-foot court, and provided for the game to be played in innings, by any number of players on a side. Two teams from the Holyoke YMCA demonstrated the game at a conference of YMCA physical directors, and the sport quickly developed under their supervision. Rule changes have been made gradually and consistently since 1900, resulting in the present rules. Today, volleyball has spread to 211 countries around the world, and is recognized as a truly international, widely played, popular sport. In 1983, the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) was founded by Leonanrd Armato. The organization started its own beach volleyball tour in the United States in 1984. In 1986, The Women’s Professional Association (WPVA) was formed to administer, govern, and protect the integrity of Women’s Professional Beach Volleyball. In 1996, for the first time in the history of volleyball, beach doubles volleyball is included in the Olympic Games.…

Being the first-born child in my family has allowed me to act as the pioneer among my siblings. Learning to lead in the home has been exciting but daunting at times. As the oldest child, I have had to learn responsibilities and patience with the supporting love and care of my mom and dad. They have always cheered me on, guiding and encouraging me to follow my interest in volleyball. For example, during my middle school years, I expressed an interest in volleyball. My parents made it possible for me to improve my volleyball skills through joining a club team and through attending summer camps. With…

In this essay I will be investigating upon the chosen sport of volleyball. In regards to this chosen sport, I will then create a fitness program which will assist me in excelling in the position of outside hitter (also known as the ‘power’), in which the job of the outside hitter to is spike (or tip) the ball over the net when an offensive play is called. The other positions in volleyball are fairly simple. The setter is the core component of the team, having the authority to set (or dig) all second balls to allow the team to advance into an aggressive offensive play. The inside hitter (also known as ‘weak’); being the same as an outside hitter except on the right-hand side of the court (this position benefits left-handed players). The middle; this player is the key to obliterating the other teams plays, the key to doing this is that the tallest player is used to block the opponents spike, rendering it useless. And lastly, the libero (also known as the defensive specialist); practically like the setter except receives all of the opponents spikes (or tips) by rapidly diving or digging the ball perfectly to the setter. The main rules of volleyball are also fairly simple. Players cannot ‘carry’ the ball (meaning no player has the ability to change the movement of the ball whilst in their control) and the ball must not touch the ground of their own side, if so the point is given to the opposing team. To win a full game of volleyball it is required (in FIVB) that a team wins 3 sets (a set is a game of 25).…

Volleyball had a significant impact on my life. It really helped build my self-esteem and instilled a value of hard work and setting goals. I was never the tallest player, never the fastest, or most athletic but I did work the hardest and I had a leadership quality. I also loved the game. I wanted to play every second that I could. If I wasn’t playing I was training. My motto was the harder you work the luckier you get. I remember trying to explain this concept my second oldest sister, who was an artist and not very sport oriented. She was very adamant that you cannot just get luckier. That was my point, I still don’t think she gets it today. While in high school I was the captain of the volleyball team each year. In my senior year…

All week I had run on the treadmill and practiced on my over-hand serve. Ever since the fourth grade when I began playing for Fellowship Christian Athletes volleyball league all I had dreamt about was playing volleyball in high school. I had been to Sullivan North’s volleyball games before; in my mind I could hear the girls yell out to their teammates, “Help!” or, “I got it!” At the same time I could hear the screeching from the shoes on the shiny, golden court moving fast, not letting the ball touch the floor. The thuds from the players diving on their knees intrigued me so much. I looked up to the girls as role models because they were superior at volleyball; I only hoped that I could play volleyball as good as them one day.…
