Personal Narrative: The Relay For Life
Since the beginnings of my educational career I have been interested in giving back to the communities from which I came from. At the start this was difficult as I had to work with my parents hectic work schedule. Once I became older and more independent I found more opportunities to get involved. However, it was not until I got my license that I was truly able to give back. Joining as many clubs as my homework schedule would allow, I went through numerous meaningful experiences that helped me understand my inner self.
One experience that was exceptionally meaningful to me was my involvement in tutoring a freshman boy. Prior to this experience I had been tutoring for over a year, extending myself in several subjects because of the lack of

Relay for Life is an annual themed walk held to commemorate victims of the deadly cancer and to raise donations for American Cancer Society. Typically, most clubs at school participate in Relay for Life; dedicated to community service, French National Honors Society was no exception. In this Relay for Life, the theme was traveling; therefore, different clubs were to decorate hallways of the school like a different travel destination. Each club would have their own take on their hallway whether it would be a game or a puzzle. French National Honors Society were to have a fitting France travel themed hallways. The club had a game in which the hallway was to be decorated with famous French landmarks labeled with numbers. Each participant was to find a landmark and the number it was associated with. Once finished they would have to list the correct numbers in order to a representative of the club; the first three winner were to win pastries. Though my occupation was solely decorating, this experience was especially meaningful because not only did many donate but many had the opportunity to learn and experience the French culture as well to which I am passionate about and long to have others experience this passion as

I’m happy with who I am today, just as everyone should be. But if I could change anything about myself, I’d want to have more motivation to do things. In the mornings before school I can barely get out of bed because I’m so tired and don’t want to go to school. I’m exceedingly intelligent but I don’t have any drive. I procrastinate on most of my work, and sometimes I just don’t want to do the work. Right now I’m rank 14 in my class but I could’ve been higher if I had any drive my freshman year. I don’t think about how my decisions now will impact me later and when I do, I don’t really care. I also don’t have much motivation to do things in sports activities. Last year I played volleyball and I never had that much playing time. Never being able…

The components of citizenship, community service, academics, work and home life, and extracurricular actives help me shine as a well-rounded individual. As an involved and caring citizen in the Union Township community, I do my best to make my mark. Displaying a good role as a citizen through community service has been a value I possessed ever since I could remember. At a young age, I started to serve my community with my parents at both school and church events and it has stuck with me since. Through community service such as being an assistant teacher in St. Veronica’s Religious Education Program, Glen Este High School’s member of National Honors Society, and Key Club, I not only helped out Union Township but I have also made new relationships and feel good about myself. Community service always makes me feel better because I know I’m helping others and making my mark through the friends I have made through both of these service programs.…

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…

I am a church member and musician at Revival Tabernacle. By being a musician, I find myself working with the talents and ideas of others as we come together on one accord and produce a skilled sound. I am also currently a student at Jones County High School. Being a student, I am a service to other organizations at school by being an usher for Graduation and also the Chorus Department. My recent involvement in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and DECA has enriched my knowledge of the business sector and how we all come together as a society and produce great ideas. In these organizations, I was able to be a holiday helper at local Nursing Homes to bring cheer to the residents. From my participation in these organizations and activities, I learned that it is better to give than receive. I was able to gain experience with dealing with the public and also give people a sense of comfort and love.…

My most significant contribution to a community, without any doubt in my mind, has been to both of my local Boys and Girls Club of America branches. I first began to go to the Boys and Girls Club shortly after the divorce of my parents. In the beginning, I was at my lowest point, until I learned many of my peers were in a similar situation. From that point on, I helped the staff at the Club, mentored younger kids, and provided assistance to anyone who needed it. Quickly, I became the Club’s youth of the month, and in 2013 became the Boys and Girls Club of Zionsville’s youth of the year, the highest honor a Boys and Girls Club member can receive. In the Club, everyone had forged a bond of understanding with one another. In some way, we were…

“We all stray from time to time….and when you do, OWN IT! If you deny it….you are giving up control again.” This can teach a lesson to people struggling with drugs and alcohol. If you deny that you have a problem, you will continue to let these things control your life, but if you own up to it, you can help yourself or get help from others. The quote, from the “I don’t know the Bible…” paragraph, “‘Well done, my good and faithful servant,”’ reflects what I believe in and what I have learned. Growing up I heard many people tell me, “God first, others second, and yourself last.” First of all, these two quotes are telling me to live a faithful life by putting God first. Also, to put others before me and serve them just like Jesus did.…

I let my right arm hang loose to cover it with the magnesium powder I carry with me. I draw a shaky breath and look up to the top of the invigorating boulder. Every human struggles everyone has hardship. When I was young I began to notice that maybe it is hard to understand what other people struggle with. The start of a mundane life began as usual a bus ride to school, but today something else happened a flash of yellow a soundless luxury sports car zoomed bass by a Lamborghini. As the car passed by everyone looked at it with amazement as the never seen a car pass from this part of the street. I began to wonder when will I get one with imaginary job I will live the high life. The bus hits a bump on the road I am begging to rationalize who much work will it take to achieve greatness to struggle to overcome adversity.…

The experience that had a big impact on my life is going to medical camp. The medical camp was held at our local hospital. The camp allowed me to tour the hospital and speak to workers in various positions throughout the hospital. To get into the program I had to write an essay and have a GPA of 3.5 or better. At camp I was the youngest and the only African American there. While there it opened up my eyes to many other jobs in the hospital that interested me. Prior to going I wanted to be a Pediatrician, but while attending I found two other professions that interest me. The first profession is Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapy is for people who go through surgery or get into an accident and try to relearn activities of daily living…

All throughout school I have participated in many clubs and organizations that have not only molded me as a person, but have helped me to develop responsibility, and leadership skills. Currently I am an active member of National Honor Society, and DECA. Both of these organizations, provided by my high school, encourage leadership, volunteer work, and have high expectations for behavior, and grades. Being in National Honor Society has shown me to continually do for others in need. There are always opportunities to get involved with the community, and even create drives for things like stuffed animals, and blankets for children who are sick in the hospital, and “Care Catties” for cancer patients, which include tissues, water bottles, hard candy, and lotion. DECA is another organization I am involved in at Frenship High School. DECA is a business organization for high school marketing students looking to learn, develop and compete in a competitive event. I have been a member since my sophomore…

I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…

Do you remember when we used to go to Oregon every summer to visit Tia Lupita? Those were the best memories from my childhood. I loved spending family time together. Going to the lake every Sunday, bowling on Saturdays, going to my games during the weekdays and supporting me and my brothers were the highlights of my childhood. Do you remember all the amazing times we had and how much closer we were back then? Things are really different now, but they don't have to be.It’s a lot busier now with school, your work, and basketball, so we don’t really have much time in our schedules to spend time together, but we can try to make each day worth living.…
