Personal Narrative: The Phantom Tollbooth
I am a self proclaimed 90s kid. Although I was only in the glorious 1990s for a year and a half, I still consider it to be part of my identity. I remember a simpler time before all of the iPads and iPhones that occupy everyone's lives. When all we needed to entertain ourselves was a good book and good company. Some of the fondest memories from my childhood are when me and my sisters would all sit in the big white couch in my downstairs living room and my dad would read us stories. Of all of the books he read to us my favorite was The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. Reading this book as a child blew my mind with its crazy plot but it also taught me that stories could be weird and fun. This book was my first deviation from typical children's …show more content…
Actually avid reader might be an understatement. I could consume books with a ferocity unmatched by another human. I was very reclusive as a child, spending more time reading than hanging out with friends. There have been a lot of books that have helped to define who I am today but when I look at the many titles on the bookshelves in my room, my eyes always drift to a thick white book covered in tape. The book is Little Brother by Cory Doctorow and I have read it so many times that it is more delicate that a 2,000 year old manuscript. I try to salvage it with scotch tape but I believe it is coming to the end of its shelf life. The book follows a teenager named Marcus as he navigates the underground hacking network of San Francisco after a 9/11 esque terrorist attack. This book was the first exposure I had to political literature and it has influenced my views a great deal. Even though this book is mainly about hacktivism, it portrays a realistic outcome of a terrorist attack from many different perspectives. Marcus is a normal teenage boy and you get to see how his family reacts to the attack and the loss of friends but through his hacking he has connections within the government and as a reader I get to see the chaos and subsequent decisions that the leader of San Francisco make. Following the terrorist attack, Homeland Security turn San Francisco into a totalitarian state where everyone is tracked and everyone is guilty. This …show more content…
I have read books that have superficially scarred me for a few moments but no other book has shook me to my core like this. I do not believe I am alone when I say that as a child I believed I was destined for something great. Even now I find it hard to imagine that I will end up working some menial job in an office. Applying the plot of this book to my life I could not even imagine what it would be like to know that nothing you do in life will ever matter since it is going to end. Since reading this book I have read more about existentialism and what it means to control your fate. While the world might not be ending anytime soon, our days on earth are limited and how we spend them means everything. This book came at a perfect time in my life because I will begin the real journey towards defining my future and it has made me think a lot harder about the decisions I make and how they will affect me later in life.

When I look back at the long list of books that I have read over the course of my life, these are a few books that always stick out to me. Whether it be the timing of finding them or the messages inside, they have helped to define and shape the person who I am today. Reading has and always will be a passion of mine because it transports me into a different world all while staying in the comfort of my room. College will be a busy time for me with increased

Growing up, I noticed a lot of discussion about financial problems between my parents. It’s not that we were becoming poor, it was because of our growing family needing more supplies. My mother just gave birth to my little brother when I started noticing the financial issues my family were facing. As a little girl, I do not know how our finances worked all I knew was many bills were due and I knew it because when I was a little girl I liked to practice reading and those bill statements were the papers that attracted my interest due to its colorful paper.…

I had an overall good reaction to this book. My first thought when looking at the cover was that it was going to be boring but as I began reading it, I realized that not only is it not boring, it's actually rather interesting, but it could also help me in my life as well. I have a tendency to over think even the simplest things and when I do make a quick decision, I always second guess myself. "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell is a book that really makes you think about the way you react to things and why you react that way. It shows that the decisions we make quickly are just as good as the ones that require a lot of thought. It explains to us why we should trust our instincts, however, sometimes it's not good to follow…

When I was looking for a book to read, this was one of the last ones on my list. I wanted to read about World War II – a war that seemed more interesting. However, this book and I crossed paths when all the books I wanted to read were out of stock at the bookstore. I thought I’d take a chance, and I’m glad I did. I fell into a book-induced stupor when I began reading it. After awhile I realized an hour and half had gone by and I was halfway through the book. I was engrossed by the…

However, this does not mean that I do not like reading anymore. I think I am just becoming mature and changing my tastes in reading. I am no longer satisfied with the novels, which are easy to read. I changed my taste to read more serious literature. For example, I like the book “Old Man and the Sea” which wrote by American author Ernest Hemingway. Although the story of The Old Man and the Sea is short, it has a profound moral. In this story, the old fisherman finally fails to catch a fish, he just takes back the fish’s backbone with its head and tail. However, the old fisherman still is a hero because his indestructible spirit. I am impressed with the quote, “but man is not made for defeat,’ the old fisherman said, ‘A man can be destroyed but not defeated’” (Hemingway). After I read this book, I sometimes reviewed my reading journey. If I read this book early in my teenage years, I might not understand the meaning behind the story. Therefore, I think my spirit world is gradually becoming mature with the help of…

Cory Doctorow’s realistic and rousing novel, Little Brother, is the perfect example of a dystopian and futuristic approach to the twenty-first century and its events. While most kids had the enjoyment of having their parents read to them at night, close to their parents and slowly drifting off to sleep, I never had that experience. My parents didn’t teach me to speak English, let alone read it to me. So, while I was growing up it was a struggle for me to have the thrill of traveling in a magical school bus, saying Goodnight to the moon or even ignoring the man with the yellow hat. I wasn’t so deep into books, I never knew they could take you out of reality and let you escape your mind while you go on an adventure.…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

Throughout high school we have always been tasked with different materials to read; whether it be Shakespearean texts, short stories, poems, or just books in general. No matter what though, I love to read. So any text I take in, I am always eager to absorb the words. The texts I have read at the time may have just felt like assignments, but now as I am older, I can see the lessons to be learned within them and how they were a major aspect as to how I view situations in the world around me. I cannot pick a favorite text that I have read throughout my grades nine to twelve years, but I will review a few that made an impact on me.…
