Personal Narrative: The People Who Disappeared
The People Who Disappeared

The Spanish founded the first settlement in the New World in St. Augustine, Florida in 1565. Twenty two years later, one hundred twenty Englishmen traveled towards New World and attempted to settle there. The settlers sailed and stayed at Roanoke Island, an island off the coast of North Carolina. They soon began to run low on supplies. As a result, they sent their governor, John White, to get some supplies from England. After many setbacks, John White returned and discovered that every single colonist on the island had astonishingly disappeared! But the colonists left a clue about their whereabouts: Croatoan, the name of an island, was chiseled on the side of a large tree. Although people have many theories, nobody

There are many theories on what happened to Roanoke the Lost Colony. That they went underground, settled at a different place, tried to go back home but there’s only one that could’ve happened to them. When John Smith left to go back to England and returned three years later with no people to come back to except for “CROATOAN” carved into a tree. I believe that the English used the buildings to make boats, that there was no war with the Native Americans, and that they sailed to Croatoan.…

What I think would have most likely happened in the Roanoke settlement was the settlers died from diseases and famine that started to spread. They weren't prepared for any of these events and they were running low on supplies they needed. They would then be buried and had the word "Croatoan" carved into the tree as paying tribute to their lives in a way. A second possibility is that the settlers decided to move in with the tribe, as the tribe are not hostile and had no hard feelings to them. And the land around them was peaceful and had plenty of natural resources around them to live off of. They would also form an agreement that, in exchange for goods and welfare, they would be welcomed to the tribe. They'd learn about each other's cultures,…

As my younger cousin, Travis, walked into the living room of my house, he looked for interesting things he could look at and touch. He started to slowly walk toward the broken, bottom half of our entertainment center. My siblings and I, enjoying our Thanksgiving dinner, watched him carefully as he curiously reached for a handle of one drawer in the entertainment center that contained at least 50 movies. He was so close to opening it when my brother exclaimed, “Careful there! The last guy who did that… he died!” Travis slowly backed away, turned around, and ran to his mother, but the real question is Who died?…

Today, I woke up quite late because I was tired from Great America. I woke up around nine but stayed in bed until eleven. Dad didn’t wake up until eleven, so we skipped breakfast. We ate Yoshinoya for lunch because Dad had a coupon. To digest lunch better, Dad drove to Villa Montalvo to go hiking. The mountain was quite empty, but we didn’t hike up to the top. The forest area was very cold, so we hiked down to the sunny areas. We walked to the cactus garden and looked at the art. Our hiking trip was a small circle, since we circled back to the Dr. Seuss water sculpture. We left Villa Montalvo and went home. I finished the sixth book, The Fate of Ten, until realizing that there is a seventh book. I hope the seventh book has a more conclusive…

Another term to describe how this event plays as a horror movie in my mind is referring to it as the “Twilight Zone”. Before I encountered this “force “or what I have referred to as a “religion” I was always involved in my community, kept close relationships with prior friends and always served in the church. In addition public places were normal I always interacted with employees at local stores and many people in public places. The main thing I received from friends, family and church is fellowship and truth. Besides truth there was also a certain amount of trust you expect from friends and especially family and the church. Many times when you face those outside of your family friends and the church you may be refused the truth and trust.…

Cross-country was the only sport that kept my life from falling apart. But, tragedy struck as soon as I entered my freshmen year in high school. My hip plates had not fused which caused discomfort leading in the result of cutting off running till it healed. The news was unbearable for me as all I wanted to do was run. Staying away from running was difficult as I watched individuals do the sport I loved. I didn’t let that stop me as I strived to stay in shape. My mornings would consist of thirty minutes on the elliptical and biking in the afternoon just to keep my legs from not giving out while I still stayed in some kind of shape. It was not fun at all being by myself in a hot weight room just telling myself I have to keep going. However, I kept my head held high through all the discomfort while gaining motivation in…

I don’t blame myself for what happened to my parents. I may not be the most buoyant about it, but who would be? Going through your high school years without complete parental support can end horribly in more ways than one. High school is the time when you need your parents the most; you are growing up, maturing, and starting your life. It can be hard to know where to start if you can’t even recognize where your parents have gotten in their lives.…

We witness media’s unrealistic standards every single day, whether it’s by turning on the TV, walking by a store window or driving past a billboard. No matter how alone I felt, I couldn’t put aside the thought that so many other women have felt what I have been feeling since I stared into the eyes of the perfect girl. In our beauty-obsessed culture, we constantly compare our realities to what media portrays, which is far from real. These messages never phased me as the carefree, bright eyed child I was. But once I actually applied the harsh judgements to myself, I awoke to the realization that my life needed serious improvement. I began to fear that my self-worth would slowly diminish more and more overtime because society would tell me I am…

Outside in Urbana, Ohio, it’s an oddly summer-like day for February; the sun shines through speckled clouds and the wind blows through the open window of an apartment at Rotary Manor, a retirement home down the street from my house. On the floor of this apartment, lies a woman, seventy-seven years old with short curly black hair, dark brown eyes, & tan Mexican skin. Normally a visit to Mee-Maw’s meant being fed past stuffed and watching her “stories”; That is not the case on this occasion. My mother knocks, turns the handle, and lets the door slam shut behind her. Soon, an ambulance arrives. Soon, there is nothing the doctors can do. Soon, this gives me new resolve.…

What happened when people die? Some people say that they go to heaven or hell, others say that they enter the reincarnation circle and others say that there's nothing after we die. Honestly, I was never a religious person but I still somewhat believed in God, I really liked reading lots of fantasy books about other worlds, and somehow I came to accept that there has to be something after we die, but I didn't know what, until now.…

This is where I have been born and brought up. I use to feel so homely, comfortable in this place. Felt as if I am with everyone. But today suddenly, I felt, I am all alone. I want to try to getup but can't move a single inch. I was surrounded by my own people, crying. I wanted to tell them I am very much there but my lips were frozen.
