Personal Narrative: The Nurse That Changed My Life
When I was in nursing school, I never thought about the dangers that lurk in the darkness, the things I would encounter as a nurse that could change my life forever. On a fateful day in 1998, there was an event, a needle stick that changed my life forever.
I was worked nights as an oncology nurse at the local hospital in Humble, Texas. I had two small children at the time, so the night shift appeared to be the best option for me. My shift started at eleven pm, the majority of my patients were sleeping and I knew which ones could be monitored without waking them up. One night I received report during shift change from the nurse that was leaving. She stated the patient in room 303 had an IV running that had a couple of hours before it would be

I also struggled with myself about why it happened, I wondered was it my carelessness or was it another person’s disregard for procedures that led to this event. The nurse from the shift before did things that jeopardized my life. First she failed to give me report that this patient was HIV and Hepatitis C positive, a very critical fact, but I knew that because I had cared for him all week. Second she had completely disregarded the policy for using the needless system we had for administering IV’s, instead she used a sharp needle. Not only that, she had set the drip rate wrong so the
IV finished faster than it should have. I was so angry at the nurse I was seeing red. I called my husband during the middle of the night to let him know what had happened. He said “I told you not to become a nurse”, not the support I was looking for.
Things after that were very blurry, I remember going to go to the ER and having baseline labs drawn. The infectious disease doctor came in to talk to me about the course of treatment and the possibility that I could have contracted one of the deadly diseases. I was started on a cocktail of prophylactic medicine and instructed to practice safe sex. The medication regimen that I was given is the same that

According to the documentary Chasing Zero, on the 4th of July weekend, Julie was working a double shift. After completing her first shift she took a nap in a patient room because she had not finished her paper work until around 0100 and was too tired to drive home. Around 0900 she met her patient, a 16-year old girl who was getting ready to deliver. The plan was to break the young girls water and start Pitocin so she could deliver. Julie followed her units protocol to prep the patient’s epidural at the same time she was preparing to administer and IV antibiotic. She entered the patients room with the patient’s IV antibiotic and epidural. Both the IV antibiotic and the epidural had identical tubing and similar packaging. Julie hung what she…

Rotation Day 8 today I’m in processing it was a slower day than yesterday so the processer had me help with a few things. They also asked me if I could go with a phlebotomist to drop some blood to the Operation room. When we got there I noticed read lines on the floor meaning we could not pass until we had full gowns. We waited to see if there was someone we could flag since there was no one in the front office. A person came in and we told her we had a delivery she took it and we left. When we got back they had a request to draw a patient in the SSI department I didn’t know where this was so the phlebotomist asked if I wanted to go check it out so I went. I didn’t know it we had to drive since it was in another location. We went in and the patient was in the recovery room she was alert at the moment and recognized the phlebotomist right away.…

Walking into work I smell the aromas of a nursing home. I hear the sounds of wheel chairs and walkers scraping against the hard wood surface. As I walk to station one, I stop by the break room to store my food. The room is full of people charting the prior shift. Walking out of the room, I continue to station one. Finding the cork board with the neon green paper, I see what hall I am working. There is only my name and one other on spring hall. I know it is going to be a rough night; but at the end, I will remember my goal, which is helping others.…

Was I really that horrible of a nurse? Did I even deserve to be a nurse? I pushed those thoughts out of my head and told myself, “Amanda, you are a great nurse.” Of course I was. Not only did I graduate top of my nursing class, I had an ER doctor who took me under his wing and showed me everything I needed to know and more. I knew more than what some RN’s knew. I’ve never had any of my patients die on me, so I must be at least a half decent nurse. I went in the nurses’ station and called the answering service once again. After getting off the phone, I began to walk out the nurses’ station to go tell Mrs. Williams’ daughter I called the doctor back and was preparing myself for another round of badgering questions when the phone…
