Personal Narrative: The Newnan High School Marching Band
I was a part of the Newnan High School Marching Band my tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade year. It was a great experience. The Newnan High School Band became like a second family, and the band room was my home away from home. As it got closer to my senior year, I started wondering who was going to get the title of clarinet section leader my last year of marching band. I felt like I would be the one for the job. When they finally informed us that leadership applications were available, I was excited to get my application. I wrote an essay and prepared for my interview. I knew I had the qualities they were expecting in a section leader. I was kind to others, hardworking, friendly, helpful, understanding, and approachable. I anxiously anticipated …show more content…
I also usually had an extra pair of gloves in my bag which I could loan out as needed. One day somehow I ended up with two left gloves and was not able to use them but I decided to keep them any way because you never know when someone will need one random glove. The next week one of the girls in my section came up to me saying she needed a glove, and she was so happy when I told her I had a glove she could use. That was a great moment because I had kept something for an emergency and it just so happened we had an emergency and I was able to resolve it. I made many memories from being section leader. The girl who needed the extra sock is one of the sweetest girls ever, as a Christmas present she got me a coffee mug with pictures from this season all over it. The awesome gift gave me the motivation to continue being the best section leader possible for my section. Being section leader certainly had it’s ups and downs, but I gained valuable experience that I will use for the rest of my

When I started Unity High School I thought that we were going to get a lot of work from my classes, and that work was going to be extremely hard. I also thought that I wasn't going to have any free time to do anything because of that, but it turned out to be wrong because the teachers give us a good amount of work but its not really hard. I thought that making friends in Unity would be hard in a sort of way but it was quit easy because everyone else was trying to make friends too. When I first got to Unity I also thought that there was going to be a few school clubs, but there is a good amount of clubs that students can join if they want to join some type of club. I think as a person I have grown more since first coming to Unity because I…

I am a leader. I have all the qualities that make a great leader, but I was not born this way.Experiences and how someone reacts to those experiences are what truly make a leader. One of the most influential experiences I have gone through is called the Lebanon High School Marching Band. I am certain that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for marching band. Before coming to high school I already had leadership qualities, but band helped bring all those great qualities together and helped me get past my two major flaws: my lack of self-confidence and the fact that I was probably one of the shyest people you would EVER meet. When I joined marching band, I spent most of my waking hours sweating and suffering alongside wonderful people that I longed to…

Bands of America was very cool this year! The bus ride went very well, only problem being that every bump hit would rewind the movie that was playing. Once we got there everything went very smoothly. I got to help the band moms put the hat boxes in order! Warm ups there were a lot of jitters in the air it seemed, but not bad ones. Waiting to get on the field was extremely nerve wracking. But, once we got on the field everything seemed nice and mellow, like we were back on the field at home, it just had a different crowd and background. I feel really good about the performance. We did the best we could do and our best got us third in our class! Heading to the hotel and getting to lay down and rest was very nice and much needed. The food was…

I would like to audition to be section leader because I am very outgoing and I love to help people in the best way I can. I also would like to audition for section leader because I feel it will help me become better as a person to show me leadership, and friendship. I feel I am a strong leader because I listen to what people have to say but at the same time tell them what they could do to make them better on their instrument. I also welcome everyone. I never single anyone out I will help them and whatever they need to the best of my ability and I will make feel good about asking questions and I would be like great friend if they need someone to talk to im all ears. I feel I can help the program and the music department as a whole is getting us closer and not having people be afraid of the upperclassmen and having all of them be a well-rounded person. Also I could help by having meeting will the class as seeing ha there input is to if their upset with things. I think I should be selected for section leader because I take the time to listen to reach out to kids. Music to me is like baseball to Babe Ruth. Music fills me with happiness and helps me with things when I need it and if I can show kids music is more than just notes and playing them but its emotion and has meaning then I feel I am and could be a great section leader.…

There have been numerous times in my life where I’ve failed at something but there was one specific failure that really opened my eyes to what it really meant to fail. When I was in high school, I was in the band, my instrument of choice was the saxophone. While in the band it is required that you learn your sheet music before you attend any school event. This is to ensure that everyone is doing their absolute best and will make cuts to perform in every function the band was asked to participate. As I mentioned earlier, I played the saxophone and had always made cuts until one day our band instructor issued out new music. Being the person I am, I glanced at the music and said “I see no need for me to practice this, it’s so simple”. Later that…

The first time I was ever daunted sitting at a drum kit, was at my first gig with my high school jazz ensemble during my freshman year. It was the night of the Presidents Circle Dinner, an event dedicated to the individuals who donated a substantial amount of money to my school. All the people I had to impress. Not only was I new to playing in front of a crowd but I was also new to playing jazz itself. During the performance of C Jam Blues, the band director pointed at me, hinting that I, the second string drummer, would be taking the next solo. The solo I played that night was the worst bit of drumming I have ever done. After that performance, i realized that the road ahead of me was going to be long and hard.…

Before I had even started high school I hit a very deep depression. I struggled with it for years. I felt I had no family and no friends. It was a very hard time for me. I didn't enjoy talking about my feelings or being around people due to the fact that I felt I just annoyed those around me. Despite this, I continued doing what I loved most: music. I began marching band my eighth grade year and loved the feeling of being on the field in the lights when our assistant band director would come over the loud speaker announcing the "McClain Marching Tigers and Tigerettes". It helped me find and accept who I am. I gained confidence and learned to lead and understand. It even introduced me to my closest friend whom introduced me to his friend group, giving me the first group of friends I had in my life. I've met so many new people and learned so many new skills throughout my marching career and I look forward to finishing out my senior year with the people who have been there with me from the beginning.…

Sweat drizzles down my skin as it exits my pores trying to cool my heated body. The blood rushes through my veins pumping blood with the consistent pounding of my heart. Every breath, every second, every action, every thought; I am standing where everything counts. Artificial turf and grass crumpled beneath my torn black shoes and the thick silence only cut by the timed chants from afar. This is the last moment I will stand here for this reason. This is the last moment I will stand here with my family. This is the last moment of my marching band career. Many will say that this was a special group of kids, others will say that this year was a show that was made to make it. I, on the other hand, will say that this was because of seven years of dedication.…

My Jr High choir teacher, Mrs. Bradbury, was the most challenging teacher I have ever had. She would never cut the choir a break, and never stopped pushing us to be our best; “I can’t” was not acceptable to her. I hated her with every fiber of my being, and every time she spoke all I wanted to do was sew her lips together. It wasn’t until the beginning of ninth grade when I realized she was amazing. Once I let my guard down, we instantly connected. Recognizing how much I loved to sing and becoming one of the top singers in my choir was thanks to her. I started working for hours every day on my songs, staying late after class for help, and going to voice lessons. I excelled exponentially and Mrs. Bradbury noticed it.…

First of all, I will be putting all of my heart into this job, I’ve been in band for seven years, and I have grown with this band for two years. I know the band can reach new heights if we work hard enough. With all the changes we are making next year, we are going to need strong leaders to aid the incoming freshman and to lead the entire band throughout the year. As drum major, conducting requires a certain kind of insight and an understanding of music, which is something that I have started to develop during my seven years of playing an instrument. Addition to my experience with music as a whole, I also have three years of marching band experience.…

Fortunate enough for me, marching band taught me how to be an effective leader. After a few years in marching band, I was chosen to be the section leader of the trumpets. A position of this magnitude requires a great deal of leadership abilities, abilities at which I was not yet very proficient. In the marching band at my high school, we had an assistant band instructor who is in the Army National Guard and an assistant technician who is a former Marine. With these two around, our band operated in a very strict manner. At first this seemed to be a bad thing because the level of intensity that was expected of us as members was extremely high. Now, looking back at my experiences, I am able to appreciate what these two gentlemen provided me. In my first year as section leader, the former marine held a three-day mini leadership camp. This camp was the groundwork for my leadership journey. I learned valuable leadership skills that I still use…

A month before the start of the school year, over 100 high school students show up early in the morning for 8 hours of practice every day. I’m not talking about the football team. I’m talking about the high school marching band. Each member will be at the school getting in shape, learning how to march, and practicing music for weeks, working to perfect an 8-minute show to perform in front of thousands of people. As a member of the Clear Falls High School band, I know how important marching band is to its members and the high school community. Marching bands across Texas are incredibly valuable not only for their members in high school and the school community but also for its members later in life.…
