Personal Narrative: The Man Who Killed My Uncle
In May of 2013 my grandma was in front of my little cousins preschool waiting for school to be let out when she was stabbed. Her killer’s name, Nahn at the time I only knew his first name. It wasn’t until a few days later that I discovered his last name it was a name I knew well Dong. The reason I didn’t recognize his name was because I only referred to him as Uncle. I believe that the actions of certain family members do not represent us as individuals.
It took a few days for the news to sink in but when it did it hit me like a bulldozer. A million thoughts were racing in my head. My uncle killed my grandma. He killed his step-mom, why her? But the thought that lingers longer than others is what if I turn into a killer too? If my uncle

Another article I would like to discuss is from People magazine written by Jeff Truesdell, Neighbors of Making a Murderer's Steven Avery Speak Out About His Guilt or Innocence: 'Those of Us Who Live Here Know He's Guilty.’ In this article, Jeff Truesdell interviewed locals of Manitowoc County; Steven Avery’s neighbors. The neighbors paint an incredibly different picture than what is provided in Making a Murderer. The neighbors discuss how much safer they felt now that Steven Avery was back in jail, and how when he was released the first time they believed something strange happened. The general consensus of his neighbors was that he was guilty for the assault he was in jail for originally, and for the crimes he is in jail for now. One neighbor…

In the story “The Man Killed” By Tim O’Brien, the narrator stares in silence at the man he has just murdered. He imagines all sorts of things and describes every part of him, from the blood running out of his wounds to his dainty long fingers. He, then starts telling us about his life and visualizes his past, present and future. The narrator envisions this man of My Khe as a scholar, not a fighter; he believes he is someone who went to war only to fulfill his patriotic duty. During this whole time, O’Brien never really speaks, and the silent is broken by two of O’Brien’s fellow soldiers. First Azar speaks, his apathetic ways are much too cruel, since he compares the soldier to shredded cereal, this also shows he feels pleasure from the man’s death. The second voice is from Kiowa, who in fact sympathizes wit O’Brien but still urges him to move on and tries to make him see that the young soldier’s death was necessary, because if he hadn’t killed him, O’Brien would have been the one…

In 2013 there were a record high of 56 murders in my home city of Trenton, NJ. My great-grandmother lived until she was 102 years old, so at the time, my thirteen year old brain never thought death could impact my family. I walked around Trenton’s streets no matter the time of night, witnessed various fights, and occasional gun scares- but no matter how dangerous the situation became, I could never see the gravity of it, and it’s long-range impact on my life. I was oblivious to and failed to realize the dangers that surrounded me. The violence did nothing but make me lose all hope for Trenton, the amount of deaths never impacted me until my cousin Shakir was murdered, it was at that time that death made me grow up.…

When I first arrived at the scene I saw Fannin lying on the ground dead. Ernie (the owner of Ernie’s Lunchroom) told me that the murderer had leaned against the wall while firing at point-blank range. As I looked around the lunchroom I saw 3 different sets of footprints. I also noticed that the handprint on the wall was a right hand. As I continued inspecting the scene I saw that the cash register was open and all the money was still in it. Customers B, C, and D had all finished their meals while A hadn’t even touched his. I also observed that A, B, and D had their cups and silverware on the right of their plates while C had his on the left. Right before I left saw all the customers tickets and decided to check the cash…

The Slavenka Drakulic essay “He Would Never Hurt a Fly” is about a young man named Goran Jelisic, a Bosian Serb, who is on trial for executing thirteen prisoners in a Breko police station and Luka prison camp in 1992. Drakulic portrays Jelisic as a handsome young man with a “serene face, lively eyes, and [a] big reassuring grin… the kind of person who would give up his seat, on a street car, for an invalid to sit down (1117). Drakulic is surprised that the man with such boyish features could be a killer. The author seems obsessed with Goran Jelisic, repeatedly describing him as a handsome man and not understanding how he could be accused of this crime. She writes “Good looking people are good and ugly people are mean” (1117). She bases Jelisic character on his outward appearances. Throughout the essay, the author is sympathetic and motherly toward Jelisic. She is baffled that a young man, the same age as her daughter, could become a mass murderer and subsequently blames herself as well as her generation for creating a society that produces a killer like Goran Jelisic.…

I can still remember the sound in my mother’s voice the day she called to tell me that Stacy had been shot. She asked me if I was sitting down. The words that came through the phone were slow and piercing as if a tape recorder had been put on slow play back. Comprehending what was being said to me felt like ten minutes, the longest ten minutes of my life. Stacy had actually been dead for a couple of days before our family was notified because the police did not know who she was. When it appeared on the Austin News my other cousin who lived in Austin saw it but never knew that it was her own family. Out of sheer disbelief and denial I searched online for all the Austin news websites. I came upon Stacy’s picture along with Christopher Chon Scott’s photo the man who shot and killed her. For hours upon hours and days upon days this man’s picture was all I could look at. For months to come this had consumed my life. I read and reread the articles in the papers. I watched the news feed over and over again. I thought of nothing else but her and her killer.…

I still proudly wear my “R.I.P” shirt in honor of my lost school mates. I still tell anyone who will listen to me their story when I am asked about my shirt. I also remember all the drunken driving awareness events I attended. I remember as if it were yesterday the drunk driving rally’s I attended at the corner of Masonic and Gratiot near where my school mates “murder occurred” and the fundraiser at the Texas Roadhouse my father and I waited in line for over 2 hours to participate in. Painfully I remember the funeral of Devon and talking to my sister’s close friend who had dated Devon for several years. I remember the candlelight ceremony I attended on the Lake Shore High School athletic field to give support to the victim’s families and honor the victims. However, these events don’t take away the empty feeling I have in my heart at the senseless loss of my school mates and the anger I feel towards drunk drivers. As I write this essay now, my eyes are…
