Personal Narrative: The Los Angeles Lakers
Beloved, loathed, and prestigious; what do all these three words have in common? They all describe one of the most highly-marketed and globalized franchises in sports history, the Los Angeles Lakers. The glamorous team with sixteen championships to its name has had its head flushed down the toilet for the majority of this decade; ironically enough, this team was the one that looked most promising at the decade’s start, as those Lakers were coming off back to back titles. These Lakers have one sole player remaining from that last championship roster and he is riding the deepest depths of the bench, a la Juwan Howard’s role for the Big 3 era Miami Heat.

What predictions can a video game make that are going to be any better than mine? Hell, I’m sitting on my couch five years deep into the future just trying to figure out why I haven’t replaced Jim Buss yet.

What do I think will happen? I don't know, man. I've always made lists of predictions since I started keeping up with the league, but something about Lakers basketball this year has just been so erratic and unpredictable. The idea of growing up in LA, the city kept safe by the watchful eyes of Kobe Bryant, for all my 18 years to wind up watching a young and budding team with dreams of making their own names a household name is an idea that I’m slowly growing accustomed to.

What it seems that most people fail to understand, including me, at first is the idea of providing these young players with the benefit of the doubt. Julius Randle is three years older than me, averaged a double double in his ‘sophomore’ season coming off a broken foot , and I’m sitting on my couch complaining about the fact his handle on the ball is a little too reckless. D’angelo Russell is fucking two years older than me, starting for one of the most ubiquitous teams in all of sports, and I’m on my couch whining about the fact that this kid missed a couple of open threes. Brandon Ingram is one year older than I am, coming off the deepest bench in the league, and I’m bitching about the fact that he’s not getting 10-points a

Swish! That is the sound of LeBron James and Kevin Durant trading buckets. Since they both possess freak athleticism and lethal scoring ability, LeBron James and Kevin Durant’s statistics are excellent for players their age. Due to his mastery of the game, LeBron James had a head start in the NBA. In fact, he was the number one recruit in the nation coming out of highschool. Therefore, NBA scouts wanted him to head straight to the NBA draft after graduation. He is also four years older than Kevin Durant, so his point total is higher than Kevin Durant’s. LeBron James’s point total is 30,072 points. On the other hand, Kevin Durant was the number two recruit in the nation coming out of high school. Kevin Durant played college basketball for one year at the University of Texas at Austin, and he is four years younger than LeBron James. Therefore, his point total is lower than LeBron James’s. Kevin Durant’s point total is only 20,222 points. Although it seems like Kevin Durant is far behind LeBron James in total points, he is really not. In fact, LeBron James had only 2,948 more points than Kevin Durant at the same age. Therefore, in the same season and at the same age, LeBron James had 23,170 points compared to Kevin Durant and his 20,222 points. Despite Kevin Durant being approximately 10,000 points behind LeBron James, he has been the NBA’s scoring champion a remarkable four times.Yet for LeBron James, he has only been the NBA’s scoring champion once. Kevin Durant’s…

On March 10th 2017, Lavar Ball, father of Lamelo, Liangelo and Lonzo, made a comment on In the Zone with Chris Boussard that intrigued and shocked the sports world. Lavar Ball compared Lebron James’ sons to all of the other children of famous basketball stars; irrelevant, and stuck in their father’s glory. Regardless of their ages, Lavar felt it was necessary to bring Lebron James’ eleven and thirteen-year-old sons into the equation. Many sports analysts are having a difficult time figuring out why Lavar brought all this attention to himself. A father and manager who has done nothing but positively influence his sons’ career, is now negatively impacting it. Analysts question whether his most famous and eldest son, Lonzo, will have a difficult…

Throughout the history of professional sports critics are always comparing players and trying to decide where to rank certain players amongst their respective leagues. Critics will do whatever they can to persuade others to believe in their opinion, or will try and find any information to help make their argument stronger or use the information to try and tear another player down. Well in today’s National Basketball Association (NBA) and over the last decade the argument critics have debated over is who is the better play, Kobe Bryant or Lebron James? Fans like myself have personally been involved in depth sometimes heated discussions with friends over this very topic. Who would you say is a better player, who would…

In the 2003-2004 NBA draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected the number one prospect in the country. LeBron James drafted directly out of St. Vincent- St. Mary High School, was the best pick that year. In his debut season with the Cavs he blew up and shocked the world when he ended it averaging 27pts, 5rbds, and 4st. not many NBA players can say they have caused this type of havoc in league. The Cavs went from one of the worst teams in the NBA to a playoff contender, and would soon have their chance at winning a world championship. The only time the new-look Cavs didn’t make playoffs was LeBron’s first two seasons with the team. During the seven year drought with this team they lost twice in their only finals appearances, to the Boston Celtics and the Orlando Magic. The transition from high-school to the NBA is very difficult, because everyone is stronger, faster, and more intelligent. He handled the situation perfectly. From his determination to his domination in the sport, makes him a king on the court, and gave him his nickname “The King.”…

Kevin Durant had quite the year—he led the NBA in scoring, made an NBA Finals appearance, won Olympic gold, etc. All of which, you’d think, would have some people saying it’s finally KD’s time to step up and win a couple chips, but from the sounds of it, people are still hitting the forward with the “You’re the future” speech…and Durant isn’t having that. Durant also wanted to let it be known that while he won’t turn 24 until late September, the Oklahoma City all-star forward considers himself too much of an essential element of the NBA’s present to be clumped into discussions about its future. ’I’ve heard a few times, in three or four years, this league is going to be yours. . . . I don’t like that. Because I think I’m established now.…

“Ever since I watched Steph Curry’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, I’ve wanted to be at every Warriors game,” I thought to myself while lying in bed. Shortly after that, I fell asleep. I started dreaming about how to build a time machine with a ritual. It started off with me going into a dark and quiet room and closing my mouth. Then I said where I wanted to go and the date of the event three times. Right at that time I woke up. I thought to myself “I got to try that! But I don’t have a dark room.” I looked around and then remembered I had an attic. I climbed up into the attic and turned off all the lights. Then I said the first event that came to my mind three times. Thunder vs Warriors on 2-27-16, Thunder vs Warriors on 2-27-16,Thunder vs Warriors on 2-27-16.…

As the final seconds of game six of the 2011 National Basketball Association (NBA) finals ran off the game clock, so did the final seconds of the entire 2010-2011 NBA season, leaving its fans nothing else but to wonder when the next time would be that they would get to watch their favorite players and favorite teams play the game they love again. Now let’s fast forward about four and a half months. As the late fall sun rises on the day after Halloween and day 124 of the NBA lockout, the 2011 NBA season should have tipped off. Instead fans are still left wondering when or if they will ever see their favorite players and teams ‘lace’ em up’ and get back out on the court. The players as well are now scattered across the map suiting up and playing in games ranging from the Besiktas Jimnastik Kulubu Arena in Akatlar, Turkey to pick up games on the blacktop courts with chain nets in the Brooklyn suburbs, and even flag football games. Everyone is wondering the same thing, when will they get to go back to work and play for their NBA teams again?…

It all began with a simple phone call one night after dinner. “Joe,” my father hollered up the stairs, “it’s for you. I was tired and had looked forward to a nice and quiet evening at home, not another stupid adventure with Jackie.…

One extremely important activity outside of the classroom that has helped me grow as an individual is Church League basketball at my local YMCA. From the outside looking in this league seems to be a form of glorified pick-up basketball with referees and a scoreboard but there is so much more to it. Almost half way through my junior year my father convinced me to try out for the varsity basketball team at school in November to which I hesitated at first but later gave in and tried out only to be cut. At first I was upset because I had never been cut from a team and I was unsure of how to handle it and what to do with my free time. This prompted me to reach out to God and ask him for a sense of direction and purpose in this time of my life to which He responded with a friend inviting me to Church League basketball. Once I experienced a few scrimmages and practices I decided to commit to playing Church League and coming to all of the…

The game took place on a cold, November afternoon in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It was the last game of the tournament and we, the CBS Falcons, faced the Red Dogs in the championship game. We were confident about our chances of victory; however, our confidence was quickly put to the test when we first saw the other team. This game taught me never again to judge a book by its cover and that effort can trump skill.…
