Personal Narrative: The Joy Of Hunting
Mike introduced me to hunting and the great outdoors when we first got married. I can remember being pregnant with our first son and going across a field when a pheasant flew right up in front of me. It scared me so I screamed and fell to the ground. I was so embarrassed knowing there were other hunters around looking to find out who was screaming. I waited on the ground for Mike to give me the ok to get back up. At the time I was mortified but now it is a great memory.

We have three grown boys now but when they were young, the youngest would ride on my hip while the other two would follow behind Mike pheasant hunting. We would all block our ears when we saw the gun go up as we knew a loud bang was about to come next. Then seeing our bird dog retrieve the pheasant that was shot down was as much of a trophy for us as it was for Mike who shot it down. We have a lot of memorable moments as we enjoyed hunting together as a family.Bring On the Pups

We started training dogs after sending first bird dog out to be trained. The trainer saw our dog about a year later and was impressed on how Mike kept up the training. At that time he told Mike he should train dogs down in our area. We have been training dogs ever since, about 25 years for clients.

We have spent many hours outside trying to make that perfect shot in the bulls eye. One of our boys shot what's called a robin-hood, (an arrow is in the target and a second arrow goes right into the knock of the first arrow. Talk about a perfect shot. Now that we are grandparents we are enjoying teaching our grandchildren how to shoot bow. Seeing their excitement when they hit the target is so rewarding. I too have a certification for NSAP 1 Archery Instructor so I can help Mike teach children to adults the fine art of archery. We are located at 287 South Main Street Concord, on the premises of Get Fit

The trail continued around the east side of the lake entering a gathering of trees forming an insignificant forest along the lake’s shoreline. From our viewpoint, the trees concealing the trail eventually dispersed on the southeast side of the lake, and the trail blended into the landscape. Using our imagination, we envisioned the route against the rugged terrain sloping into the lake. No point in taking a vote now, we had trekked to the lake and the consensus was to proceed with a lap around the lake.…

In Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford changes his entire philosophy about hunting. For example, when Whitney disagreed with him about jaguars he said, “You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?”(Connell). Rainsford believes animals have no understanding of what is happening, therefore, it’s okay to hunt them. He doesn’t care if they feel pain or understand death and shows no remorse. In addition, when General Zaroff set the hounds to get Rainsford, he “knew now how an animal at bay feels” (Connell). Rainsford has to run away, set traps, and continuously risk his life to have a better chance at surviving. He felt the way animals do when they are being hunted and finally understood…

The idea of hunting to humans is when one human kills an animal for sport or for food, but we have never thought of what it would be like to be hunted ourselves. My breath is soft and slow, and the only thing that I can hear is the faint howling of the wind. I pull back the string and wrap my fingers around the arrow. I aim and let loose. The arrow flies and hits right on the target. Archery is one of the things that I live for, as well as soccer and listening to music. My culture is what I do on a day to day basis and what is a large portion of my life.…

Everyone has their own community or organization for which they belong to. Within that community you tend to find who you are and what you are about. For me I found my identity in being an outdoors man. Being an outdoors man at my young age seems to be rare at this day, but that doesn’t prevent me from doing something I love and appreciate. Growing up with my family full of avid outdoors men helped influence me and only made my identity stronger.…

Growing up in rural Kansas was boring. Especially since I grew up in the seventies. There were no cell phones or game systems to occupy my time. My family had an old black and white television set. I loved to watch The Price is Right in the days before Bob Barker’s hair turned white. After the show was over, the only way to kill time was to play outside and wander down to the creek that ran parallel to our property. There was a secret trail buried in the wall of trees that lined our two acre yard. My brother and I would slide down the trail, landing on the dirt banks like explorers on a mission. Sometimes we would hunt for crawdads under rocks. Other times we would take our poles and fish. We never went into the water after the time I got bit by a gar.…

I've never been an "outdoors" experience kind of person. Maybe, it's because I'm very sedentary and prefer to stay inside to read and enjoy tranquility. I avoid all types of chaos and crowded places. Nevertheless, my visit to the Camuy River Cave Park (back in 2004) was refreshing and enriching in knowledge, historically, scientifically and spiritually. That experience brought the best out of me, as a human being and a nature lover, by giving the chance of experiencing a whole new level of peace and tranquility.…

The house is decorated with streamers on the walls and paper skeletons taped to the bathroom doors, there is a cake on the counter, everyone is getting ready to head out for a couple hours [or a hour, depending if I am still willing to keep going or not], the sun is almost set, and everybody is dressed up and ready to start the hunt tonight. If you couldn’t already tell, there are 2 special occasions today[but for most people it is only one special occasion], the day that kids walk upon the streets while dressed up in either monster costumes or as their favorite cartoon/movie/TV character and go door to door, asking for candy at the houses with the lights on. The other occasion, however, is one that can happen any day of the year, one that is celebrated for one or more people at a single time[but only usually only one at a time] and everyone gives the person who is celebrated on this day presents and afterwards[or before] everyone eats cake and ice cream[They don’t always eat ice cream though, and I think pie is better than cake for this occasion]. I like to call this time of year cavity season.…
