Personal Narrative: The Garage
The Garage
I spent over twenty years serving in the military, and over the years I have collected a few things. My wife says I have a problem she says I’m a hoarder. She says hoarding is a disorder and most people don’t realize how bad it is. Furthermore I have so much clutter in the garage the kids could drown in the mess. I said honey it’s just the garage and I will clean and organize it one day.
I have a three car garage and only one vehicle can fit in it at the moment due to all my military gear I collected throughout the years. I have 6 boxes of manuals that needs to be shredded I just don’t want to throw them away due to security concerns. I have 30 pair of boots, 70 uniforms, 12 military tough boxes full of military gear. The garage is a collector of all things that I don’t know what to do with. Not only do I have military gear in the garage I have my lawn equipment, tools, bikes and holiday decorations.

I asked myself will I ever use it again and I had to be honest with myself. For instance I was holding on to the kid’s bikes, I always thought they may want to use them again, but I knew they wouldn’t because they are old enough to drive. The military gear I gave to a high school that had a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program (JROTC). Once everything was out of the garage, it was time to start sorting everything into three piles: throw away, donate and

I felt like a total failure as a marine NCO for not ensuring that my secretary holding my protein and other workout products along with my peanut butter and jelly sandwich gear. The very thought that anyone would’ve come into my room and steal that is nerve racking and completely unsatisfactory. Let alone the top wall locker that held my worn snorkel gear, a luggage bag, and lawn chair. These are personal belongings that are more meaningful to me then the laptop, Xbox 360, and TV that cost me well over 1000$ altogether. Thanks to my leadership and…

The major way Americans helped their troops was by rationing and recycling. The rationing program set limits on the amount of goods that the American consumer could buy. Families were given ration stamps to buy their allowance of groceries, gas, clothing, tires, and fuel oil. “‘Do with less-so they’ll have enough,’” (The U.S. Home Front, 2010). The U.S. Office of War Information used posters to motivate and urge U.S. citizens to use less so that their troops could be supplied. Americans also hosted scrap metal drives. In many communities, hosting these drives helped to collect scrap metal, aluminum cans, and rubber.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

People should save things that mean a lot to them or have any kind of value. Dollar value and sentimental value are things people consider when they are cleaning out that old closet or garage. Items that have good memories are very good things to save. Most people save old photos or trophies because they mean something special. Something that everybody else views as trash or of no value can mean the most to you, and you should keep it, whether its books or jewelry or whatever else you see as important.…

I haven't looked back. Since then, if I haven't used something in a month, I get rid of it. Sometimes I throw it in the garbage, sometimes I give it to charity, and sometimes I try and sell it. I am going to continue doing this the rest of my life. Go ahead, call me a bad American. I'll admit, this type of thinking does go against everything Hollywood and the general media throws at you growing up.…
