Personal Narrative: The Drake Davis Scholarship
When searching for scholarships, I find it’s important to apply to those that really mean something to the applicant. I stumbled upon the Drake Davis Scholarship and knew instantly it was a scholarship I was interested in promoting, and applying to.
“There are people out there who have a much harder life than I do, and all I can say to them is that they are much stronger than I. To those of you with abusive parents, or school bullies, to the people out there with money problems or fear of the future, to the women with cheating husbands and the men with whoring wives, to the children who think that their lives aren’t worth living, I say to you; keep moving forward. For my sake, and the sake of those who fell to their own hands before me, for the sake of the people who thought life was too scary… keep living!

I loved every single one of you, and no one could ask for better friends.”
The quote stated above are my best friend’s final words. Dalton was a very talented young man. He excelled at Parkour, magic tricks and reading. He was an artist and wrote magnificent short stories.
Life has changed since his departure, and it’s so hard to comprehend. It's still hard to believe that my friend, and go to person left this world. As I grieved and struggled with my own depression, I wanted to make a change. I wanted students and strangers to know they aren’t alone. So, I educated myself. I pledged to let my friends know they can talk to me, to be respectful and supportive of everyone regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. I pledged I would listen with an open mind and without judgment. I would take what people say seriously. I pledged to check in with friends who may need to talk. I pledged to help a friend call a crisis hotline. I pledged to tell someone I trust if I think someone is considering suicide. I pledged to call the crisis hotline whenever I need

To begin with, I was over my grandma's house on a warm and cozy summer night. When out of the blue my mom asks Me if I would rather go to school online or regular high school she stated that if I chose to go to school online I'll be going to a school named Penn foster. Because it would let me work at my own pace, it didn't cost too much, plus they would help me if I didn't quite understand one of my courses. My first thought was wow why the heck not! and blurted out yep I wanna go to school…

Throughout my academia, I have been a member of several clubs and organizations, but have yet to attend a free leadership and service conference. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars needs a free in-person event that hosts a multitude of workshops from becoming a better member, to becoming a better leader and more. This event should be a two-day weekend long including update meetings on how the organization is accomplishing its endeavors and goals in terms of membership count, influence in the community, and upcoming events. During a workshop, we could bring in experts to discuss how to become a better writer to increase our chances of earning NSCS scholarships and other scholarships. In another workshop, our members and club leaders…

Even generations ago, my family members realized how difficult it was to fit in time to see distant family members. That’s why since my great grandmother was around, we’ve spent one day during the holiday season participating in what we call The Progressive. As the tradition goes, each family is required to prepare one part of the traditional five course meal, the assignment of which rotates between the families each year. Each family prepares their part of the meal and hosts it at their home, allowing the entire family to visit everyone’s home and “progress” through one giant five course meal throughout the course of the day. It has, without a doubt, provided some of my family’s favorite stories throughout the years while allowing us to reflect on the year’s past with each other. Although it has been around since my grandparents were children, it has changed drastically since it’s inception those many years ago.…

My greatest influences are my parents and my brother. My brother suffered from Guillain- Barre Syndrome when he was eight. He lived in the hospital on an artificial ventilation for 97 days and later he had to continue physical therapy for at least ten years as he was completely paralyzed. My parents and my brother devoted their few years completely for his treatment. Today, my brother is a successful engineer working in the bay area. I learned that with dedication, determination and diligence we can achieve our dream in life…

“Life starts at the end of your comfort zone.” Is a quote I have constantly told others, encouraging them to step out of their safety zones and to experience life. But I truly did not understand the meaning of that quote until I stepped foot into Delta Hall in January. I had heard about the Washington Semester Program when I came to tour UGA my senior year of high school and I knew instantly that it was something I wanted to participate in. Since freshmen year I patiently waited until I could finally apply to the program and then before I knew it I was actually in Delta Hall, starting the program. I was out of my comfort zone, in a completely new city, away from friends and family – living with 31 strangers for an entire semester and there was no turning back. Looking back on this semester, I cannot believe how life changing it…

It is my duty as a child of God and a Deputy to learn how to accept those individuals who have different worldviews than my own. I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

I know this was my choice, but that didn’t ease the waves of shock that crashed over me when our plane touched down in Chicago. Of course I knew that English would sound different when natives spoke it, that the land of the free wasn’t exempt from humanity’s self-destructive prejudices. I guess I just wasn’t anticipating the international flight attendant to pretend to misunderstand me , or the thick Texas drawl to first teach me what “y’all” meant in the back of a Taxi cab. Those first few hours here were worrying to say the least.…

I was lucky enough to attend an extremely privileged private prep high school on the main line, and coming to Temple University was definitely a culture shock for me. It is not so much the urban environment, as it is the diverse student body that I am exposed to every day in my classes. Temple has given me the opportunity to take classes like Kids in Crisis that serve to shed light on difficult topics like racism, discrimination, and privilege that I was never exposed to at my high school, and for that, I am eternally grateful.…

Before entering college, I was terrified. I often thought that what I learned in high school was not enough for me to succeed at a university. I viewed my writing skills and just my general course knowledge, as inadequate. While this hindered me at first, after experiencing my first semester in college, I believe that I have grown tremendously, not just academically, but socially as well. Being at such a diverse school has made me a lot more comfortable and openminded about conversing or even befriending those with different beliefs than mine. Though I have made growth over this semester, there are still areas that I need to improve on. Throughout the first semester, I noticed that I still am not confident in my work and that I tend to float by, settling for mediocre grades. While my grades have made a great improvement from high school, I know that I can do a lot better and that I should be putting in more effort in my school work. After my first semester at UNCG, I have improved in a lot of areas, and in the ones, that I still struggle in, I am in the process of growing and improving in those areas, but overall, my first semester has allowed me to learn a lot, not just about myself, but about the community that I am living in as well.…

It was the most unusual feeling I had ever felt. I had been to a few funerals before and I had even lost both of my grandparents, but losing Alison was different; it was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It seemed so unreal because just the day before I was sitting in the same seat talking to her. How strange it is that someone can be so full of life, but in just a short moment God can take them away. In that one short moment I lost so much. I lost the person I could confide in, the first person I told my secrets to, and the one I could be my complete self around. Friends like Alison do not come along everyday. On August 16th, 2006, only the third day at my new school, I found out how strange death is. Though some may not understand because they have never experienced it, the death of a best friend is easily the most painful feeling; it is an experience full of mixed emotions and countless life changing realizations.…
