Personal Narrative: Spiritual Formation About The Sabbath
First cold of the school year not that bad right? But over fall break I gained my focus back and I am “beating” myself up for not doing my homework but at least I got my basement, soon to be room painted. The bad thing about colds is they are like a roller coaster you feel fine one minute and the next you feel like your “dying”. This is not how I wanted my week back from an overwhelming and stressful break. This had made me think about what we discussed about in spiritual formation about the Sabbath. I have grown up and even taught what the Sabbath was, but as I get older I realize how important it is to take a break and relax at least once a week. I mean God would not have made it if we did not need it. I am beginning to come to terms with

I never thought how interesting it would be to visit a different place of worship besides Christianity. Since the day I was born I’ve been a Christian and whatever anyone else believes in is wrong and that they are going to hell if they don’t believe in Christianity. About 3 years ago I visited the International Buddhist Progress Society a Buddhist temple in Naperville. Buddhism from what I learned looks more like a way of life or guidelines to it rather than a religion. Buddhism tells you how you could live life better but doesn’t scare you with the prospect of hell instead you live with ignorance. My own history with Christianity still made me doubt or fear the conquences of going to this temple. Part of me believed that I be punished by…

The greatest asset to my life growing up besides my family were the churches that my family attended. Although we have moved several times due to my father being stationed in various locations with the military, the Baptist churches we have been a part of have been a stable place for me. Currently, I have the privilege of calling South Knollwood Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas my home church. South Knollwood is under the leadership of Pastor Jeremiah Metsinger, a third generation preacher.…

The Sabbath celebration is a day of rest and worship of god. A day of religious observance and abstinence from work, kept by Jews from Friday evening to Saturday evening, and by most Christians on Sunday. Accepting Jesus was by far the biggest decision I have had to make. Welcoming him into my life changed me in so many ways, for example, I had finally found myself in this huge world that was filled with nothing but sin and destruction. Basically, I was a self-destructing time bomb, but Jesus stepped in right on time for me. When Jesus started taking control of my life I was in the, "rebirth," stage of my life. The rebirth stage tore me all the way down I was nothing at that stage I was like a newborn baby all over again just in a spiritual state. Coming from a broken background, I was breaking myself down by lying, cheating, just doing everything possible that I knew I could get away with. That phase gave me consequences that I was not use…

This past Friday January 29, I attended a Jewish Mincha, or afternoon prayer, in comparison to the Shacharis, or morning prayer, held earlier that day. My class prevented me from observing that. I visited Congregation Poale Zedeck in Squirrel Hill just outside of Downtown Pittsburgh. I sat in the balcony with the other women because I was trying to respectfully observe their faith and was very unfamiliar with their traditions. It was a good thing I left my dorm early because I had some trouble driving in the rush hour traffic. The entrance was through a great beautiful stone archway with blue satined glass windows around…

I didn't fit in well as a child. I was diagnosed with adhd before I can remember. So my learning disability had been stealing confidence from me bit by bit my whole life. My husband makes me confidant. It's easier now. Until I moved in with his Mormon parents. I'm not going to lie I really just wanted them want them to like me. I am not Mormon I'm not religious at all actually. I am agnostic so I don't think entirely that the Mormon religion is wrong. I just don't know. My whole life for some reason I just thought that all people were the same in the way of not not liking people or judging them until you know them no matter there life style. At least that's how I am and in the back of my head I know that wasn't true but I just felt that way with people I knew.…

During the year of 2010, the summer before eighth grade year. I got the chance to participate in a five day youth mission trip in Galveston Texas with my church that went by the name of Oakwood Baptist Church. During the mission trip there would be many different activities that our church group would get to be a part of, such as an outdoor dodge ball tournament, indoor carnivals, and our very own Vacation Bible School. I was able to take part in this amazing adventure, and I couldn’t wait for it to begin.…

Today was the day. The big day. My election for Lieutenant Governor of Division 2B for Key Club, an international service club, was today. Fear and anxiety pricked my skin in rapid movements emanating from every pore. I rehearsed my speech for the fifth time that day. Upon arrival at the Fairfax Library, I urged myself to remain calm. I quickly scouted out the other girls who were present; one girl was dressed professionally with a folder in her hand. I knew that was my competition. The girl spoke eloquently and genially, she radiated enthusiasm and a certain warmth that I did not have. With every question that was asked, she answered with a smooth smile and high-pitched tone that was dripping with sincerity. I bristled inside; I had just been slapped. I was shrouded in a cloud of anxiety and anxiousness. Suddenly, I was dragged from my reverie.…

Imagine looking down at your phone and seeing an incredibly long text message from your best friend. This is inscrutable coming from her, so you start to panic. As you open the message, your heart drops as she reveals that her grandmother, the person she is closest to in the world, has just passed away. This happened to me late my junior year of high school, and my heart broke for her. Concerned, I immediately ordered a large cheese pizza and peach iced tea, her favorite comfort foods, and rushed to her house.…

When I was younger, around age 7 probably, it was around December and it was super cold and my church was doing Posadas, a tradition for some Mexicans and Mexican- Americans, for about a week and a half before Christmas. On one of those days that I went, my friend, America was also there. She was younger than me and always wore her hair up in ponytails and sometimes wore a small bow in her hair. I only ever saw her in church and church related things. So we never talked during church because then Father Mac, the pastor who was somewhat bald, and he just started preaching there a while back, would literally stop church to call those who made any type of noise out. So when America and I finally got a chance to talk and play without getting yelled…

Every human struggles everyone has hardship. When I was young I began to notice that maybe it is hard to understand what other people struggle with. The start of a mundane life began as usual a bus ride to school, but today something else happened a flash of yellow a soundless luxury sports car zoomed bass by a Lamborghini. As the car passed by everyone looked at it with amazement as the never seen a car pass from this part of the street. I began to wonder when will I get one with imaginary job I will live the high life. The bus hits a bump on the road I am begging to rationalize who much work will it take to achieve greatness to struggle to overcome adversity.…
