Personal Narrative: Southern Extreme Volleyball
¨Your team becomes your family, the ball becomes your best friend, the court becomes your home, and the game becomes your life¨-Unknown. The inventor of volleyball is William G. Morgan in 1895. William took the characteristics of tennis, basketball, and handball. William enjoyed the game tennis more than the rest, but tennis needed a racket. William did not like all the equipment but did like the idea of a net. So, William invented volleyball which was a less rough version of basketball. This took place in Holyoke, Massachusetts at the Springfield College of YMCA. I started doing a volleyball spring league in fifth grade till seventh grade. I really enjoyed the sport and building a relationship with my team. After that, I started doing a more competitively advanced volleyball league called Southern Extreme Volleyball Club. I have been doing Southern Extreme since eighth grade to the present. Southern Extreme takes place during the winter months. Southern Extreme improved my hitting, passing, and serving skills. Be the leader on your team! If your team is down and in a funk, be the person to change the attitude and mood, be a leader. Keep a positive mindset and cheer everyone up! I think being aggressive is a big part of volleyball. In volleyball, if no one is calling the ball or not trying for it, be aggressive and take it. You should practice like you are in a game. In a game are you gonna be lazy and not try? No, you are not. So, you should practice like that and not be lazy. Give practice everything you have and show the coaches what you are capable of and what you can handle. Practice makes you better every day even if you do not know

It was a frigid, windy, Friday night in October. The only light was the bright and beaming illumination of the stadium lights projecting over the soccer field. The bleachers were full, it seemed as if the whole school was there, and as a freshman with anxiety, it made it hard to cope with the fact, that I was going to be a starter for the varsity soccer team.…

I knew that there were going to be the girls that thought they were the best. And there was. I had one person help me out and that was my dad and mom helped sometimes. I was scared of playing softball once I got on the field ,because the ball moved so fast coming at me. For as long as I remember, I have been raised with a basketball hoop. This hoop stood firmly, looking down at the trees secured by patches of cement in my backyard, in my neighborhood, Dorchester. This hoop was my center of faith and tranquility surrounded by gunfires, shattering windows, car alarms. As a girl, I learned not to adventure any place else other than this hoop because going beyond its faded lines on the concrete is an unknown world full of hazards and danger. And when I did cross these seraphic lines, I could sense the bittersweet emotions running throughout the neighborhood, my home.…

I have experienced many failures in my life but one stuck out to me more than others. I have wrestled since I was 8 years old. Through all my matches I have wrestled in my life, something hit me. My sophomore year I worked really hard to make it to the state tournament. Going into the sectional tournament, my record was 19-3. I had a by the first round which put me in the semi-finals. After winning my semi-finals match 12-4, that put me in the finals against a kid I wrestled 3 times before this. He pinned me the first time we wrestled and the next 2 times we wrestled I pinned him. Going into this match I had a lot of confidence because I knew I could win. I underestimated the want he had to win. He surprised me and came out strong. My sectional…

The vibration of the basketball hitting the ground is the best feeling the world. Light was shining through the humongous windows onto the worn out gym floor like a flash light. The dorky, round glasses settled crookedly on my face, and my poor fashion sense gave the impression of an athletic misfit. Being the smallest, most awkward student in school never had any advantages. I felt my life was full of challenges, and thus, I had to strive to prove my small stature did not hinder me in the slightest. I struggled throughout my younger years to find a sport that suited me but I finally decided to dedicate myself to the pursuit of playing college softball.…

The positions required for court volleyball are quite different from beach volleyball. Court volleyball requires there to be six people on each side of the court. The players wear knee pads and ankle braces to protect their bones and joints, and they wear tennis shoes for traction and foot protection. Each player has a specific job. There are passers, blockers, hitters, setters, and defensive specialists; generally there is one of each, with an additional hitter, although everyone on the court can play almost any role at a given time. Since there are so many people on the court, there is a higher chance of one of the players touching the ball and keeping it in play than it hitting the floor and becoming a dead ball.…

I represented my medical school volleyball team at the annual All-India competition for four years. In order to excel in the game, I went through rigorous practice sessions where I observed experienced players, learned every aspect of the game and practiced it diligently. Along the way, I learned to work under pressure, realized the importance of thorough analysis, hard work and persistence, and developed effective teamwork skills and leadership qualities. I believe that these skills would help me to become a detail-oriented pediatrician who does thorough analysis, can keep calm under high-pressure situations, and can be a supportive team member as well as lead the team when…

Diving on the ground to get the ball up, setting the ball outside, and having your hitter slam the ball into the opponents side of the court. That is what volleyball is all about and why I have such a love for the game. I am here to tell you about why this sport is so important to me and also why it plays a very big role in my life. For me when I play it’s about being a team, going out there and showing yourself and the crowd that you know what you’re doing. In the time you are on that court you leave everything behind you and focus on one thing: playing your game no matter the outcome and leaving everything on the floor.…

Studies have shown that by improving confidence you also improve you performance (Topics, Sample Papers & Articles Online for Free, 2016) In my opinion the school needs to ‘bump up’ the publicity on sports in general not just volleyball, the community could benefit from this because of extra money pouring in. If the community and school did this, it would develop my interests and skill in the sport and ultimately it would develop my performance. Studys shows that the two most important things in a sport is Analytic and Tactical Ability — the ability of the mental system to evaluate and react to strategic situations (tactical ability) and motivation and Self Confidence — a motivated and focused athlete, with a level of belief in themselves, often seen as arrogance in athletes. (Topendsports.com, 2016) By focusing on the institutional level of Figueroa’s Framework you can simultaneously gain both things leading to a greater enjoyment for everyone. This is because the amount of participation equals greater enjoyment. The reason this affects me is that when more people are motivated to play the one sport, I will also obtain satisfaction and…
