Personal Narrative Short Story
Personal Narrative The fourth quarter had arrived and all the pressure was suddenly nudging against our team and Cadillac. The score was even, 65 to 65, as the starting five for the quarter huddled around Coach Dubie. Everybody, including me, were exhausted from a long, exasperating battle. “ Alright boys, let’s win this thing,” coach commented firmly. Then, we stepped onto the court ready for war. I matched up with my opponent, who was considerably larger than I and intimidating to most, but that didn’t matter now. Rapidly, Ryan passed the ball from out of bounds to Noah to start the quarter. Quickly, Noah dished the ball to me for an easy lay-up, which gave us the lead. Soon, the quarter was halfway over and the lead had suddenly taken favor of Cadillac’s team. Subsequently,Coach Dubie signaled for a time out and waved me over to the bench. So I seated myself next to Jason who had a look of doubt on his face as he glanced in the direction of the clock to see the score. “ Oh …show more content…
Yet as the game continued Cadillac’s lead became more minuscule and soon the game was all tied up, 80 to 80. Shortly I gazed to the clock, there were 4 seconds left on the clock as coached signaled me over to him. So I hopped up out of my seat and strided over to him. “ Alright Mike so here’s what you need to do, I want you to run off the pick Cooper’s gonna set and curve around for an open shot,” Alright coach, I got it,” I called to him as I jogged onto the floor. I set myself into position and sensed the pressure being weighed down on me. “ Break!” Ryan shouted as he smacked the ball. Productively, I broke over to where Cooper was placed and brushed off of the screen. I hollered out, “BALL,BALL,BALL!” while clapping my hands as fast as greased lightning. Ryan soared the ball over to me. I snatched the ball and dribbled back and forth with my defender struggling to get open. The clock ran down rapidly.

In March 2011, I took a few days of classes and received my hunting education certification. Looking back, the actual class time is just a blur of what not to do, but I was reminded of them when I took drivers education last December, with the what not to do teachings. I also remember being very nervous about the test, but having a great feeling when I learned I passed. That October, I remember being immensely excited to go on my first hunt. The night before my dad and I left, I had a parent teacher conference and I remember getting some strange looks in the parking lot because we had a trailer loaded with tents, four wheelers, chairs, and a bunch of other stuff…

Before Marvin’s game his dad, Mr. Whalen, asked Marvin if he wanted a ride down to the school and Marvin then replied with “No. Thanks, Dad, but no. It’ll do me good to run down there.” (435) This act shows how Marvin is not lazy and knows how to prepare for the game. In addition to warming up he rests, he also knows what to eat and how much. Mrs. Whalen was nervous that her husband, Mr. Whalen, would end up getting caught in the excitement of the game. He promised her that he wouldn’t. When they got to the game, Mr. Whalen eyed the big center before the game started. During the game the big center would not stop fouling Marvin and, “again the big center fouled Marvin.” (439) This act could cause Marvin to get seriously injured, but instead he ignores it and takes his shots. The big center’s dad was speaking harshly about Marvin and saying Marvin should get called instead of his son, Guido. Ironically Mr. Whalen, “who talked long and seriously to Marvin about sportsmanship,” (433) ends up getting into a brawl at one of Marvin’s basketball game over this. Right before this had happened Mr. Whalen’s wife told him that he should go take a smoke because he was getting too excited, and she was trying to help him relax. I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

After I watched two hours of intense play and the huddle split, I observed high fives and complex handshakes of some sort. “Hampton on three. Hampton on three. ONE, TWO, THREE, HAMPTON!” They started coming my way; as an ex-basketball player, deep down I yearned for a handshake or some kind of acknowledgment, but I sat there like a fork in the road. Each member parted around me to my left and to my right, some giving head nods and some giving nothing at all. I quickly realized that I was clearly not a part of this discourse community.…

Schilaty made an important decision to go to Skagit Valley College, partly because he wanted to play basketball. Mr. Schilaty can tell you that basketball brought him back alive, and that it motivated him to try harder. In Everett High School, Mr. Schilaty really got into basketball his senior year, where he was the captain, and lead the team to 5th in the state. No one could expect what would happen next- Mr. Schilaty rose proudly from the chair, he stood up tall, showing us that he was definitely over 6 feet tall. “I couldn’t pass or dribble a lot, but I could score,” he said, as if he were reliving the moment. This love of basketball leads him to believe that if he worked harder, and got good grades, he could play basketball in college. Therefore, Mr. Schilaty put in all he had and attended Skagit Valley College, because he knew that people from all over the town would go to their games and go “cardinal crazy.” You could see in his eyes that Mr. Schilaty was pleased that he would have people that honored him, and through his sophomore year at Skagit Valley, he was able to gain self confidence. On the screen, all of our eyes stared in awe at a picture of Mr. Schilaty as a basketball player with his loving family; it is said that he was trying to squeeze his muscles to make him look better. At this point, he realized that his basketball days were almost over,”I liked basketball, but didn’t love it enough to go in debt for it.” Everyone looked up, somewhat confused, though interested about how Mr. Schilaty had thought his decisions through, and was not just a madman who was crazy, but a man who strived for success. Pondering through our heads was the thoughts of how a man could suddenly realize that family and success is greater than the sport he lived off…

I couldn’t describe how I felt. I was astonished, I guess. We turned around, running to the other side of the court, and the crowd cheered again. Someone else made a basket too! This was the most exciting day of my life. I could feel my smile get the biggest and the brightest it had ever been. Then, I was guided to the other side of the court again and before I knew it I had made another basket. Sadly, and too soon, the game was over and everyone was cheering their heads off.…

It was a perfectly normal Saturday night, until I sat on the couch. I expected to enjoy a funny movie with my dad, but instead I got a trip to the hospital. I sat on the couch, and then I felt a sting in my elbow. At first, it felt like I got a shot at the doctor, but it slowly got worse, and felt more like a knife slicing into my elbow. I winced and sprung up from the couch. I squinted and my eyes scanned the spot where I just sat down. Aha, I thought. There was a small piece of plastic, and it looked like it broke off from a container.…

Whirling, he sped towards the hoop, his muscled arms ready to shoot. Abruptly, the shrill shriek of the whistle split the air, halting him in mid-jump. The team leader, Pack, shouted, his normally pale face ruddy, “Jason, you are the power forward, you shouldn’t catch the ball now!” Jason made a derisive noise, scorning what Pack said. He pounded the ball against the ground, and suddenly, he lobbed the ball viciously towards Pack, putting almost all of his brute strength behind that pass. The ball connected with Pack's face, whose skin split open like a ripe berry.…
