One night we were at Emili Lewis’s house. A few of us girls wanted to try to stay up all night. It had been raining so we decided we wanted to go for a drive. This point of the night it was like 1:30 a.m. We drove for a little while before we got bored. We decided to brainstorm some ideas of stuff to do. We decided we wanted to go out to Box Canyon in Kaitlin’s truck to look at the stars. It took us a little while to get everything put together. We finally started heading out there at 3:00 a.m. On the way out there we passed a truck. The truck was very short, matte black, and had a circle light bar in between the headlights. None of us recognized the truck and we got a little nervous. We decided to ignore it and keep going. For the rest of the drive we talked about boys, problems, and then we started talking about scary stuff. When we got out there we were too scared to get out of the truck, so we turned around and started back into town. We got…

The Luxor in Las Vegas is a good place to go because of the luxury of the hotel, the exquisite food, and magnificent entertainment. I enjoyed staying in the famous Luxor hotel and Casino. I loved staying in the beautiful four star hotel, it was fun, and I hope to go back someday.…

In my experience, I don’t think I am reluctant to a specific identity. Houston is a very diverse city that people can find almost any type of music genre. In my community there are Hispanic and African American families. The music that is heard is of all kinds from “R&B, Pop music, Reggae, to Cumbia, Bachata and Regional Mexicano.” I have lived in the same community ever since I was born and in my opinion, I have grown up listening to the different types of music genres. This has shaped my identity to be open to different music genres and traditions.…

One day I came home from school and saw a moving truck in front of my home. The first thing I did was find my parents to ask them if we were moving. They both said yes, all of us are moving to Fresno California. I was afraid because I had lived in Modesto my entire life and was very comfortable here. I knew my way around Modesto and especially my school where I had many friends and knew the teachers well. Modesto, after all, is my hometown and now I'm transferring to a foreign place. When all of us arrived in Fresno we stayed there a couple of weeks and realized the house had a huge amount of issues such as with leaking water pipes, a broken heater and a variety of other problems. My dad said “Maybe we are not meant to live here”. Finally…

When I was ten years old, my parents told me we were moving the California. I was absolutely thrilled. California was purely an abstract and conceptual mirage-type of place, too far away to know where it was, and too far away to really understand. The magical land of celebrities, skyscrapers and colossal burgers. A place where everything was possible, where dreams could actually become true, and where you had the ability to do what you wanted and be happy. This naive and unrealistic vision of California has affected my childhood so much that it is, in many aspects, still is part of me today. I discover new things everyday about this place with the same childish enthusiasm that I did the first day I arrived. I still gasp everytime I see the Hollywood sign, enjoy going to…

My mother had found a zoo online that was located in our city and decided that it would be fun to check it out. I had my doubts since I had always trusted well-known zoos such as the San Diego Zoo, but in the end I too decided it would be worth looking into. It was Saturday noon, when my mom, dad, and I left for the zoo. When we were halfway there we came upon a bumpy road scattered with rocks. My father told us that it was used in winter to keep the cars from slipping on the icy road. But I could only think of one thing at that moment, the immense headache which the constant bumping on the road brought me. I complained that we should’ve gone to the Humane Society. It was right near the house and there wasn’t a bumpy road we had to cross when…

Within a small town with nothing but, cows, silos, and good old America football, I have been driven to a wondrous conclusion that fuels my purpose in life; to escape and fulfil a destiny much grander than anything my town has to offer. Though I have learned some useful skills and qualities that have shaped who I am today, primarily due to the impositions placed upon me by my community itself.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

On Saturday April 13, 2013 I was walking through the parking garage on the USAA campus in San Antonio, TX to start my 4 hour work shift, I began to go through the turnstile and seemingly startled awake a bat. This bat began to fly and squeal in fear. It darted at my head getting caught in my hair a couple times. I started to scream and flail my arms about trying to fend off the nocturnal flying mammal in fear. During what seemed to be forever I was able to unlock the turnstile and exit the entry way but not before rupturing two discs in my neck. This incident caused quite the turn of events in my life. I had been working for USAA for 3 years and truly loved it there. I also lived in a beautiful apartment with my mother and two children and…
