Personal Narrative: Running Sports
Throughout my high school career, I have been participating in at least one season of a running sport. It started freshmen year, when I decided to join the spring track team. I thought I would hate it, and only joined because I had nothing else to do after school. The first week of the season, I felt so behind and could not keep up with the pace that everyone else was already at. The first week of track is dedicated mostly to building up endurance and getting any new runners, like me, in shape, so there was not much running the first few days of practice. However, I decided to try another week before giving up. Once I started getting into the real running, everything changed. After I began to really run, I could not stop. I loved the feeling

In 2008, I was a eight year old and, regrettably, a member of the Saint Joseph Cross Country team. I consistently finished in the last five runners, and despised every moment that I spent training for the race season. Even though I began running cross country in elementary school, I was never a natural. After years, I was allowed to quit. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I had forgotten my hatred of running. After much enticement from my mother - a runner herself - I joined Bowling Green High School’s Cross Country team. Halfway through the first practice, I remembered every reason why I had quit the sport years earlier. Regardless of how much I begged my mom, she insisted that I finish the season. I was stuck with two choices:…

I step aboard the school bus glancing at my sleeping teammates as I make my way down the aisle. The green illumination of my watch is the only thing lighting the way to my seat. My headphones slip from my ears as I kick a freshman out of my spot. “Front of the bus,” I whisper, careful not to wake the motionless sleeping bodies around me. I set my bag down and readjust my earbuds, but my eyes wander to the time displayed on my phone’s screen. 4:32 A.M. I love being a cross country runner, I think to myself sarcastically. As the bus breaks the morning silence and roars alive, I adjust my bag as a pillow and settle in for the ride.…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

Two days. Two days was how long the break between training for track, and training for cross country started. As a team our goal was to have the top 12 guys run 500 miles each, which at the time seemed to be an unreasonable goal. However Coach Hampton was confident that this was a reachable goal and encouraged not only the top 12 guys, but the the JV guys as well, to join in and train with the top 12.This was the summer of 2016, I had just had track state and made it to finals for the 4x8 only to get my relay disqualified because I cut into the inside lanes of the track before the cut off line. This had been our goal all season, make it to state, get to finals, and see what happens. Causing my relay to get disqualified is one my worst moments…

Participating on the Sutton High School cross country team has been one of the most rewarding yet stressful experiences of my life. For the past five years the Sutton cross country team has been a second home to me and season after season I return thirsting to vanquish a competitive fire. Although I'm ecstatic about competing this year, I was not always this happy about running. Five years ago I decided to try out for a sports team that involved less hand eye coordination (seeing how I have none) and tried out for the cross country team at my school. Almost immediately did I find out that a simple task like running could become much more strenuous not only on my legs and lungs but on the mind. While my body adjusts to the challenges of dirt…

I shuffled across the field watching the running back take the ball running to the right side. I was the only one there to make the tackle Tyler and Kai both got blocked by Lineman and Landon got blocked by a receiver. I ran across the field, we both met at the pylon I only had to hit him out of bounds so I dove……. And I missed. As I fell to the ground my eyes were closed. I opened my eyes and I felt a sharp pain in my right elbow. It felt like my arm had split into 2. I looked over and I saw Landon.I said “ Landon go get the coaches I think I broke my arm.” I thought I had a broken arm. So he looked over at my arm and said “ Oh my gosh.” He started screaming for the coaches saying “Koen hurt his arm! Koen hurt his arm!” As Landon was getting them I was wondering what was going to happen to me. I was about to throw up, I…

One of the most evident changes that I have undergone as a runner is my team. In high school I ran alone with no other girls to stand at the starting line with. Running alone was difficult, but it made it much more comfortable for me, as a runner, to stop thinking so hard about everything that surrounded me and accomplish what I needed to in a race. I didn’t have anyone to compete with and I ran for the joy of running. Nothing else mattered when I ran, not place, not time, not the runners, all that mattered was me crossing the finish line. Six months later, I now have competition that is my teammates; I have a specific time I need to meet, a specific place that I need to cross the finish line and specific jerseys to look for while on the course. I never thought the adjustment to college running would be so difficult for me, but it is changing me as a runner. I am running in my head rather than on the course. I am running against my team rather than with them and this is holding me back from being the runner and the student I need to be, but it is giving me a different outlook on how I can and should run.…

From the day I could walk, I was involved in sports. From playing tee-ball in the backyard with my dad when I was three, to trying three new sports as a senior, athletics have been an integral part of my life. In my elementary school days, I tried every sport that was offered through the Jefferson Parks and Recreation. This included baseball, football, wrestling, karate, soccer, and tennis. Through middle school, I dropped several of these sports to focus on my two favorite sports, baseball and wrestling. Training for these two sports never ended and most of my time was spent either on a baseball field or on a wrestling mat. Entering my high school years, baseball and wrestling were the only sports I competed in. By my sophomore year, I was…

My goal is to become either a physical therapist or an athletic trainer and help out many athletes who struggle to get back to their normal body. I had two injuries during two consecutive high school golf seasons: a muscle strain in the back and a collarbone fracture. After a week of physical therapy after my surgery on my right collarbone, I started to be able to carry my backpack with one shoulder and write with my right hand. Two month after physical therapy, I was able to hit my driver. Then I realized something quite surprising; as I started to practice, my driver started to go further and further. My coaches had the same reaction as they both asked me if the story of the collarbone incident was actually true.…

“If you don’t push now you’re not going to make it,” my legs were burning, “push Conroy! Now!” It was state sectionals, my final race, the 4x800 meter relay, and all I could hear was my coach’s voice screaming at me from the side of the track. I was running a great time, my best time of my season, but it felt like I was going to collapse. My lungs burned and with every breath I took I thought they were going to burst. I have been distance for track for five years and it has never been easy. Running is as much of a physical challenge as a mental challenge; finding your inner strength and pushing through the pain is half the battle.…
