Personal Narrative: Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Throughout my childhood I would avoid books as much as possible simply because I never enjoyed reading like others did. When I did read, it would be because I discovered a really good series. Other than that I wouldn’t read because I never grew up with being read to, so I didn’t find it enjoyable.
While most kids had the enjoyment of having their parents read to them at night, close to their parents and slowly drifting off to sleep, I never had that experience. My parents didn’t teach me to speak English, let alone read it to me. So, while I was growing up it was a struggle for me to have the thrill of traveling in a magical school bus, saying Goodnight to the moon or even ignoring the man with the yellow hat. I wasn’t so deep into books, I never knew they could take you out of reality and let you escape your mind while you go on an adventure.

I would be assigned books that would put me to sleep like Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry because it would have no action that I enjoyed. That’s when eighth grade happened. I saw this smart kid reading a book with a bland red cover with the title I am Number Four. At first I thought it was too advanced and boring so I didn’t bother reading it. Until that summer I went to the library and saw the book under the “Most Read” section and I gave it a shot. I could see why that kid wouldn’t put that book down during class. It made me feel so many emotions I’ve never felt before over a book and I couldn’t stop reading the series, again I wouldn’t do my homework and my parents would get mad because I would read too much for once! I have recently just finished all the books in the series up to this point and I’m waiting to get my hands on the one that just recently came out. I have read this series several times because I just thought it was so

I’ve always responded well to words, so it was no surprise that Verbal-Linguistic is my highest intelligence. People who are high in this intelligence think in words, enjoy reading and writing in their free time, have highly developed auditory skills, and can be taught well through words, directions, and books. Any of my friends could tell you that I love to read. Ever since I learned, I have devoured books like I’m starving. The summer before my 5th grade year I read the Percy Jackson series at least 9 times, and that doesn't include the many times I've reread it since. I currently always have a stack from the library waiting right by my bed, and a second more permanent pile of books I loved so much I…

In my younger years, my parents would read to me often. They thought it was critical for me to be exposed to literature at a young age. It was not long before I read my first book. I was introduced to many Dr. Seuss books. Therefore, it was no surprise that Green Eggs and Ham was the first book I read by myself. From then on I progressed into my favorite series of books, Magic Treehouse. These books followed two kids, Jack and Annie, who discover a treehouse with magical powers. They travel back in time to the dinosaurs, mummies, and ice age. They also traveled to…

Today was the day. The big day. My election for Lieutenant Governor of Division 2B for Key Club, an international service club, was today. Fear and anxiety pricked my skin in rapid movements emanating from every pore. I rehearsed my speech for the fifth time that day. Upon arrival at the Fairfax Library, I urged myself to remain calm. I quickly scouted out the other girls who were present; one girl was dressed professionally with a folder in her hand. I knew that was my competition. The girl spoke eloquently and genially, she radiated enthusiasm and a certain warmth that I did not have. With every question that was asked, she answered with a smooth smile and high-pitched tone that was dripping with sincerity. I bristled inside; I had just been slapped. I was shrouded in a cloud of anxiety and anxiousness. Suddenly, I was dragged from my reverie.…

The newness of reading had worn off by junior high. My leisure reading had decreased significantly due to sports and increase in textbook reading assignments made by our teachers. The textbook reading assignments changed how I felt about reading. When in elementary school, reading was learning, but what we were reading were nothing more than stories made up by a publishing company. There was usually a lesson learned at the end of the story. Textbooks didn’t have that same story like nature. They were full of facts and what seemed like complex analogies and theories. Reading was not fun anymore.…
