Personal Narrative: Reading Through High School
As a young boy reading was never an exciting activity for me. Since the first day I began reading proficiently in the first grade all the way through high school, reading was always a chore. Novel after novel we read in class in which I found myself dozing off into the distance dreaming about everything but reading. The only books I’ve ever enjoyed to this day continue to be Magic Tree House, but after 3rd grade the story line begins to repeat and mock the others, kind of like a Capri sun after drinking them your entire childhood. However, the one thing that those books taught me is that a surprise can always be right around the corner. Fast forward 7 years to my sophomore year of high school. My interest in the stock market and financials is the only that gets me excited about coming to schools. I found myself monitoring stocks throughout the day and following market trends by night. I was hot for wall street and wanted to know more and more so I could understand the market. I began surfing the web for any kind of info I could get to feed my hunger. I was reading article after …show more content…
I needed to be able to read and study stock charts like the ones the country saw plummeting since 2008. I was reading charts like books right one right after another. Analyzing every jagged point and pit on the chart like little kid reading the hardy boys trying to solve a hot trailed mystery. I simply couldn’t get enough. For the first time in my life I found myself enjoying to read. It wasn’t in the ordinary way that most high school kids enjoy. I wasn’t reading hunger games gossiping about Peta and Jennifer Lawrence’s character that she played in the movies. I was rambling on and on about GoPro and Alibaba and how they couldn’t be beat on wall street. I was loving the story that the stocks told. They made me want to know what was around the corner, but in my case that was a story only time could

Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

Finding one book that intrigued Stephanie enough was all it took to make her an everyday reader. The same goes to me. When in my earlier years I hated reading. There were only two things I hated to do. Those two things were reading, and doing what someone told me to do. Hating a combination of the both you could see how the disposition with reading would subsist. It wasn’t until the summer going into middle school that I changed my ideals on the subject.…

The last time I remember something as huge as starting in high school was having to move to Oregon from Alaska, but for better or for worse, here I am, attempting to make my mark on this big blue Earth. However, Highschool was never always just peaches, cream, rainbows and unicorns. If I’m to be one hundred percent honest here, I was legitimately terrified of it, whether it be the totally reasonable fear of being stuffed into a locker by a bully or getting lost in a labyrinth of corridors and passages of infinite classes and broom closets. But those fears never truly emerged up until the final days of freedom that remained from my graduation of 8th grade. As the days drew nearer, so did my fear reaching the brim of a breakdown. I was scared,…

“I think of life as a good book the further you get onto it, the more it begins to make sense,” wrote Harold Kushner. I never really cared for reading, but that wasn’t until high school. I wasn’t that eager to learn or read nor read but I used to read books. I used to read books I can relate to. Overtime reading became more interesting & easier.…

As a teenager, I would read through the profiles of business leaders – successful entrepreneurs and top managers in leading corporations. It became increasingly clear that a strong majority of them started early in their business careers and with a marked degree of focus. Realizing my acumen for finance as a subject area, I therefore decided to “get my feet wet” soon after pursing my Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Mumbai (Bombay). Extensive efforts and networking lead me towards a golden opportunity with ABC, the Indian arm of globally reputed Investment Bank. I joined the ABC team as a Junior Analyst. The exciting role involved reporting to senior managers and working in the Capital Markets industry and developing competencies in cutting edge Financial Products and services.…

My interest in finance started from a young age when I was given the opportunity to shadow a broker for a week. I was able to gain a firsthand experience in the markets. It was the fast-paced environment, the ability to analyse large amounts of information that first sparked my interest in finance. It was from this experience that I felt studying finance at an undergraduate level would satisfy my interests and provide me with a solid foundation for my future career. My desire to pursue further academic studies is fueled by the enriching experience I have had at Cass Business School. Being surrounded by intellectually engaging individuals from diverse backgrounds and an academically rigorous course has stimulated a passion of finance as an academic study. Further studies in finance especially one that is more mathematical will deepen by understanding of the financial markets, which I believe is going to be crucial to succeed in the financial services industry going forward.…

My approach to reading as a child was quite different than it is today. I can still remember clearly how scientific my approach was at the ripe old age of ten. “Dad,” I would say, “next time you’re at the library, get me a book for my book report.” I did give him some direction, however. “Remember, it should only be about this big…..it can’t be more than 100 pages…..and please, make sure it has lots of pictures.”…

Usually, whenever I mention the words stockbroker or investment other students snicker that I'm actually interested in "that stock market stuff." My interest in finance started when I was in High School because of my uncle. I remember watching the graphs of stock prices all day without getting bored even one bit. Due to the difficulties in career prospects in finance in Turkey, I haven’t applied any universities for studying finance after high school. However, during my years in the department of Education and Mathematics, I realized that I do not want to be a teacher. I worked in different sectors such as sales, marketing, teaching, web design and photography as an intern or part-time worker to see what I want to do with my career.…
