When I need to escape or to breath I like to visit the pond in my back yard. It is surrounded with tall grass up to my ankles and has a long rickety peer. When I was younger my grandfather would take me to the pond and we would sit there for hours and just connect with nature. My grandfather was a man of mystery he grew up without knowing his biological parents as he was adopted. When he was 18 he joined the Marines and was shipped off to Vietnam. While there he was in charge of the men and controlled the radio.…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

The first perspective is of a carnivore’s. The taste of meat is one of many things in life that you can’t just recreate and expect it to have the same taste as the original. It has a unique taste and texture that only the mastication of flesh in between your teeth can satisfy. The tenderness, juiciness, and taste is what leaves people wanting more. Speaking from my past love for meat those were all the reasons I was head over heels in love with it. Although after I learned what these poor creatures have to endure for me enjoy such a delicacy I became a vegetarian. Some meat eaters know about what goes on in factory farms and how their food is processed but they continue to enjoy their consumption of meat. Although it is a good source of protein…

I’ve always thought food as just a substance to give nutritional support to the body, but there is much more beyond the concrete definition. The meaning of food is defined differently from people to people. Sometimes food is the key to survival, their source of income or just a hobby. But for me, food has help me identify what type of eater I am, reveals my upbringing and has certain roles in my personal life.…
I grew up in Bakersfield, California in the 1990s. I never really thought about pollution, or the industrial facility that flanked my elementary school, but I was always sick, always coughing and stuffy. Later in life I went back to that old school and found that there was an oil tank farm, behind a fence, right next to the playground. While I have no scientific proof that this was causing my sickness, it is probably a bad idea to put such facilities in close proximity to children, or any residential area. During the course of this research I used a website (USA Today) to look up my old school and found that the chemical most responsible for toxicity around my old school was sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is used in the production of fertilizer, which makes sense because the San Joaquin Valley is the states top agricultural producing region, sometimes called the “nations salad bowl.” Sulfuric acid can cause respiration problems, and irritation. Long-term exposure causes cancer.…
